Very late post (visited 8/23/2019)
One of the oddest things I ever did during my travels - take a tour of De Wallen/the Red Light District *with my parents*.
While the tour itself is very educational and I consider myself a sex-positive individual, my parents... let's just say that they are a bit more socially conservative on those matters (I don't bring up sex at all with them even to this day).
While on the tour Martin (the tour guide of Amsterdam Red Light District Tours) gave a few pointers about this statue. Per the inscription the statue was created by Els Ruerse in 2007 and was commissioned by Mariska Majoor, herself a former sex worker and now runs the Prostitution Information Centre (PIC) as well as heading PROUD, the Dutch union for sex workers. Random fact: Majoor became a member of the Order of Orange-Nassau for her contributions to the promotion of sex work as a legal and respectable profession.
The statue was unveiled during the Red Light District's 2nd Annual Open Day in 2007. The statue is fortified with steel to prevent vandalism and is perched atop a high, granite pedestal to deter public urination. Most importantly the inscription on the bottom of the statue reads "RESPECT SEX WORKERS ALL OVER THE WORLD". When Majoor went into the profession she thought of sex work just like any other job - it wasn't until later that she started to realize the social stigmas sex workers face while performing their duties.
Having Belle being situated both next to the PIC and on the outer edge of De Wallen is very fitting then as it forces people to think about the industry from the sex worker's perspective - not only should they have the right to work in a safe environment, there shouldn't also be a strong negative association in promoting prostitution just like any other profession.
Standard etiquette of RLD applies... *please* don't take pictures of the women at work. Taking a picture of this statue, however, is totally OK. read more
