I've stayed in lots of hotels around the world but never one like this. It has, and I don't want to…read moresound like some spruiker but what I have to say just might. Tough. It's true. It has the best combination of professionalism, personal attention, and comfortable choices of any place I've ever been to. Add the location, which could be, added all up, the best for exploring up and down NSW's south coast (which has the best beaches and wildlife and bushwalks in the world, imo, and I've live here for over 30 years)--and you have a place that isn't just suitable for a drop in stay, but to live in for a wonderfully restful and stimulating retreat. As for exploring the region, you don't have to worry about stumbling around. Rob asked me upon checkin whethwr he could help with what we had planned, and he was brilliant, as we had wanted to go to a specific area that isn't often open. He also handed me the best guidebook to the Shoalhaven, and gave me an up-to-date prognosis of the weather to help our planning.
As to the room, these small-business owners seem to be behind the times. Instead of going cheap and stingy, they bloody well astounded me. Huge snowy-white towels. A lot of toiletries--manuka honey-based, no less, beat even the famous hotel in California that was all reputation, frankly, like the whiff of coffee left in an emptied jar. Here, Fresh coffee and plunger pot, a range of good teas and bikkies, a full better kitchenette. Everything utterly spotless, so well.
But none of that matters if the room isn't comfortable. The room is light and airy and roomy, but the choices made in furnishing it are exceptional. That choice of chairs! Three types they chose--balcony, lounge, desk. All excellent. But when have you found a comfortable chair in a hotel, let alone a 'motel'? I have a bad back, and would be happy to live in that room, which would make a brilliant writers retreat. Of course most hotel and motel rooms couldn't be writers' retreats. Lighting in most makes reading a pain. This has a range of lights that made me think, once again, that these owners are crazy, tossing pearls before swine. This little piggie is very grateful.
Five stars for mattress and bedding, too. And those pillows. I don't know what they are, but it did a better job than my own in supporting my neck and head. The look of the furniture is very pleasant, too. No self-conscious style, just warm and friendly.s
I know this sounds ridiculously positive. I can't help that.
On the plus or minus side, the room was dead quiet at night. I loved it.
And, since it's just metres from and looking onto the Greenwell Point jetty, you have full view, in addition to the lovely view of the waterway, you get the treat or not, of observing a large group of pelicans who spend much time either swaggering around the pier, or sitting on posts beside it. They're so amusing, they could be quite a distraction.
