Located in the…read morehistorical center of Siracusa, in an ancient tiny island called Ortygia, the duomo symbolizes the melding of multiple cultures that lived in Siracusa, the largest city in the known world (at the time). Today it's a cathedral, but also existed as the center of worship for different religions. The Greeks were here prox 600 BC, the Romans were here, the Normans were here, the Arabs were here. Each regime added a facade to the architecture that created a weirdly beautiful cathedral. Siracusa used to be a Greek city state too and was the most wealthy and populous of the city states. It is beautiful here. It's cool that a Greek center is now part of Sicily and Italy. The duomo and the south are definitely worth a visit and your attention when you're in Sicily. It is extremely good at amplifying the slightest sound, an unintended secondary result of the mining. You can clearly see the tool marks on the walls, the layers of removal, and the holes where scaffolding was placed in order to reach higher up the mine. It's so cool to walk inside it, like being transported back in time. Also: it's nice and cold inside.

I could have learned so much more if there had been more information displayed in a language that I understand. I can understand some of the Italian but not so much. But resources are limited in Sicily and being a visitor, it is up to me to bridge the linguistic gap. I was in luck that a museum official was giving a tour to what must have been some special tourists and doing so in English. He was kind enough to let me listen in and even ask a couple of questions. That was the bright spot of my visit.

Ancient Greek Ruins!…read more Closes early in winter at like 3 p.m. Since my trips to Siracusa or Syracuse (I have seen both spellings) has always been in late afternoons due to my husband working endless hours-this trip to Italy was hardly a vacation since I dare not venture out alone. This was one of the stops that I tried to visit a few times while in Siracusa but never made it in. I heard the ruins here are quite a site to see. It's a huge park that is gated and secured so if you don't make it in you still will not even catch a glimpse of anything, unlike the ruins in Agrigento or Taormina. If you are on base go to the ITT office and secure a tour they offer a tour once a month. 45 min drive from Sigonella. Make it early if you can they open at 9 a.m.

Although it's an important site, this is the worst run by far of all the Italian heritage sites run…read moreby the country. Signage is poor, long lines, not friendly as to where to go or even offering literature or audio walk along informational headsets. The site is a treat but could be so much better with minimal effort-10€ entry should offer something more than a walk.
