The boys and I came here because I wanted them to try a different ice cream place. Ben and Jerry's is classic to me- the flavors remind me of my childhood. I got the oatmeal cream pie- and it tastes exactly an oatmeal cream sandwich. The boys got strawberry marshmallow- a non dairy option- and strawberry cheesecake. I was a little disappointed that our ice cream wasn't a little harder- but it IS about a hundred degrees outside today. The air conditioning was very functional and the tables were clean. This was a great option for beating the heat today. I was able to get parking nearby for free because we came here after 630p on a Friday. Overall, five stars from me! read more

A pretty great location for Ben and Jerry's. The go to place in Ucity to get good quality consistent ice cream at a good price. This specific location is located on 40th street along a cluster of different establishments. It is a short walk from a majority of places and easy to find. The area is also very nice and safe. They usually have a majority of the many flavors as well as the many cones. My favorite things to get are mint chunk or half baked, either in a cup or cone with chocolate. You can even have any ice cream blended into a milkshake The atmosphere here is very casual and the staff are great. Like any typical Ben and Jerry's, the decor is light colored and full of cows. This location has a couple of tables, but not many. If you decide to come here on free cone day, be sure to get here early. The lines gets very long and you will have to wait. It is always a great experience though. You can also purchase pints of ice cream as well as ice cream cakes from here. They come in all flavors and are very good. The cakes are a little more expensive since they are full cakes with ice cream, but they do come to 3 sizes. I have tried their cakes and they are very good and make someone's birthday very special. Avoid going here at all costs. The portions are very small. Ice cream is average. Management is very rude and dismissive. Also the shop had a very weird smell, similar to mop water. Not too surprising considering what happened to the location that closed down near CHOP which was under the same management. Super happy with my experiences at the store. I've been in several times and there's always a short line, though likely because I go in at non-prime hours. I eat mostly the vegan flavors, and really they don't taste too different from the real ones! Cherry Garcia in particular, super chocolatey. I also decided to get my friend a going away cake, and since he's a little lactose intolerant, I bought a cake and asked for lactose free ice cream. They accommodated! The cake was ready in less 24 hours and ready for pick up early. I got whipped cream frosting, but there was an option to get it plain or just use icing instead to write the words. Baked goods are alright, but stick to the shakes, scoops, and pints and you'll be happy. For a Ben & Jerry's, I was very disappointed. Not only were the sizes ridiculously small, but the chocolate sprinkles cost an extra dollar to my order. Now a dollar isn't a lot, but I can buy a tub of sprinkles for $5. No way does a tablespoon of sprinkles justifies the $1 extra. I had a large strawberry cheesecake in a cup, and it was fine. Tons of fun flavors and toppings to create the ultimate ice cream treat! I tried the vegan PB and cookies. The texture was a little odd (almost choppy, probably because it didn't have dairy) but the peanut butter bits and chocolate cookie chunks are delicious. Service can be a little slow. Both times I came here were during "off" peak hours (around 2 pm on a weekday) and there was only one employee at the counter working. Overall I love Ben and jerrys and its company values. 5 stars for the ice cream and usual service. 3 stars for the usual amount of Penn students that this place brings in. I normally don't have a problem with them as a whole, but here can usually bring in the worst of them. It was super amazing for Ben & Jerry's to organize an event like Free Cone Day. and the fact that it had people on hand collecting donations to go towards helping the end of poverty at every single store front was pretty unbelievable. But the fact that the majority of Penn kids in that very long line didn't even stop to give a dime before getting there free cone was pretty ghastly. True a lot of people did and walked away with a useful 10% card when they did. But that spot could have had so many more people doing it. But enough on that bad afterthought because the ice cream here is a serious vice. I do love me some Phish Food and Half Baked. and overall their good places to hit for your fix. I just think the one by Rittenhouse Square is the better one to go to for it. read more

I usually go in with many friends, and we were all pleased with the delicious frozen delights. However, the service here leans toward being terrible. Every time I go here, the people behind the counter are grouchy, grumpy, and look like they want to be doing anything but serving ice cream. It's fine if you feel that way, and I'm sorry, but don't project that onto your customers. Last time I came here, my friend asked for two scoops instead of one scoop of ice cream, and got death glares. It's really not that hard to add one more scoop! In addition, last time I came here, I thought I had left my wallet here, so I came back and told them. Their answer was essentially, "Oh, I'm sorry. That sucks." ...okay. No one is in the store. You couldn't care even just a bit more? Even the wallet so happens to be in the cashier box area? The ice cream that Ben & Jerry's provides is an obvi 5 STARS. Getting it at an actual store and not in pints from a corner shop really makes a difference. It feels creamier...probably due to freshness and lack of the freezer burn that my fridge brutally attaches to any inhabitants. The service here is iffy. Stopped in for an after-dinner dessert. They scoop most of their staple flavors (ones you'd see at a grocery store). They have a few sundaes, shakes, and smoothies. They do offer a sorbet and a non-dairy option as well. The topping selection is decent, nothing to brag about, but have the typical ones. They do offer a variety of their pints. The price is a bit high here though as compared to a grocery store around the corner. They also have ice cream cakes available in a freezer, ready to purchase and take home. It was a bit crowded when I went, so seating inside was at a minimum. On warmer nights, there is seating outside. All in all, a typical Ben & Jerry experience. Have you ever wondered why they have such complex flavors or combinations? Almost every ice cream of theirs has a "texture" to it, with bits and chunks of chocolate, cake, fudge etc.. I heard the story on NPR that Ben (co-founder of Ben and Jerry's) has almost no sense of smell (a condition called anosmia), so if Ben couldn't taste a flavor he added more ingredients to it making it richer! :) Pretty cool, huh!?! My current favorite is 'hazed and confused'! I got my free cone on their free cone day from this store, the line moved pretty quickly and friendly staff too. The staff is generally fast & courteous, if a bit hipsterish. Since in theory, each scoop shop is selling the same product, the only thing to distinguish each from the other is staff, decor, and location. There's nothing outstanding about this one on 40th. Of course, lots of Penn students come anyway. The staff are amiable enough. Some people swear by Ben & Jerry's, but to me it's nothing special. Why buy a cup of ice cream for $5 when you can get a gallon for less at Fresh Grocer up the street? Sure, you don't look very cute in flip flops & a mini skirt lugging it home & eventually eating it all, but that's not the point, people.
