I really could give Benny's a 6 star if I was able. I genuinely don't know what some of the lower ratings are talking about that are featured. The chick that said slow service? Dead wrong. Stopped in at 11:30 on a Sunday so I expected inventory to be low (and it was). Was informed that they only had three varieties available and that they still needed them for sandwiches and would not sell them in quantity. This was fine since I just needed one of each variety. Was told they wouldn't (couldn't) sell me a bagel, only a sandwich.... WTF?! Needless to say last time I'll drive across town from the East side to this 'bagel' shop. UPDATE: Thank you Andrew for replying to my review. I think that says a lot about your desire to improve your business. We understood it was Mother's Day. That's precisely why we chose to avoid the 'brunch crunch' at the more typical sit down spots. In fact, your shop was NOT sold out of 'all' bagels at the time of my visit. Your employee clearly communicated which varieties and quantities were still on hand. What was frustrating was the fact that I was told I could not purchase a total of three bagels (1 each of three varieties) after being told bagels were available,due to the fact that they 'had to save them for sandwiches'. Benny's bagels is the best bagel place in McKinney! I have been going here ever since I was a kid, and now that I am an adult, I'm still in love with the bagels as ever before. Tried out Benny's for the first time last Saturday. My husband ordered one of their breakfast bagel sandwiches and I ordered the chicken club. Both were ready quickly and absolutely delicious! We also took home half a dozen bagels and their honey almond cream cheese. They were gone before Monday morning. We love to support small business dining and these homemade bagels really hit the spot and reminded us of our favorite bagel shops in the Midwest (where we're originally from). Great place for simple breakfast, coffee and lunch. Only frustrating part... if your new to this place or even a regular, they change where you order depending on who's running the place that day. And don't expect them to acknowledge you entering and directing you. Like this morning, people were left standing until patrons gave them a hint as to where to place their orders. What a HUGE disappointment... I have had amazing breakfast bagels here two previous times. This morning I decided to order 2 NYC bagels with Lox and cream cheese to go. Waited patiently and took the order to my hotel room nearby for a "surprise" breakfast in bed for my wife. The only surprise was there was no salmon with bagel and cream cheese... How can you mess up a turkey bagel? Ask Benny's Bagels. They have mastered it. Showed up for a lunch bagel for the first time and was thoroughly unimpressed. They only had THREE types of bagels ready to choose from: jalapeño, garlic and onion. The restaurant was very clean which I appreciate, hence the 2nd star. The most annoying part of my visit however, was the pony-tailed employee who sat at the table next to me eating on his break. He was fortunate enough to have his earbuds in listening to his music and therefore didn't have to hear his own ungodly chewing (smacking). I wish I could have been so lucky. ************ UPDATE This is how this establishment decided to handle my poor review: "Lol. What a joke. First of all, we open at 6 AM and close at 2:30. So if you come in at 1 (an hour before we close) then yeah, there will not many choices. That being said you got the onion bagel you asked for so why complain at all? Over all disappointing They did not have jalapeño cheddar because they apparently only make 5 per day? Per the girl taking my order. The bagels themselves seemed really stiff, and there was minimal cream cheese. My partner for a sandwich but said it was fairly plain and very dry. They are also very small in portion. read more

As a former resident of NYC I'm resigned to the fact that I'm not going to get the same product that I ate on the upper west side. So here are the adjustments as I've seen them: Bagel- respectable variety. A bit more dense with decent chew but lacks some texture when toasted Cream cheese- again, decent selection of sweet and savory flavors but no whitefish. My biggest complaint is that they're a bit skimpy with their Shmear. It left me wanting more Service- Friendly but predictably slow at peak times on the weekends. Funky ordering process. Went in this morning. Wanted to try a place I haven't before. I got the Early Riser bagel and my daughter got the salmon lox and we got hash browns. Service was great. I was immediately greeted as I entered the store. My order was taken promptly. The staff were friendly. The food came out fast and accurate (my daughter had some customizations to her order). Got home and the food was tasty. Hit the spot. I also got some garlic cheddar cream cheese and oh man is that stuff tasty. We will definitely be back. Nice little small business bagel shop. I have a thing for NY bagels w/cream cheese. They are literally my favorite thing about NY. Having been stuck with chains "who shall not be named", I was literally ready to hop a plane. Luckily I've found a place to get my fix. FYI they go pretty light on the cream cheese so you may have to order extra. They also have the best smoothie my daughter and I have ever tasted. It was a mixed berry, and the strawberry banana was delicious too. Will definitely be back to try blended coffee drinks. They also have a rewards program for frequent visitors. Good bagels, good variety: breakfast bagel sandwiches, lunch bagel sandwiches, wraps, vegetarian options, even a breakfast burrito (anything can be made with a croissant in lieu of a bagel/customized). Tried the "early riser" on a sesame bagel; the added garlic cheddar spread on the side made this one good. Tried the chicken club croissant, and it was good on its own. Took a bite of the Mac and cheese and I wanted the whole thing. They serve smoothies, espresso drinks, coffee, and tea. Sandwiches/wraps/etc. range from $4.29 to $7.69. Love this place! Ok, its the only bagel place in McKinney, but I still love it and you can tell most of McKinney does as well. There is always a line to the door, so expect a wait. You can't just hop in and grab a bagel. The service is friendly and very clean. The bagels are chewy and toasted to perfection. The cream cheese spreads are scrumptious. Although my favorite is the Benny's breakfast, two scrambled eggs, ham, and cheese on a toasted bagel. It hits the spot every time :) read more

Strictly meh. Service: Apathetic and occasionally confusing because it's inconsistent if they want you to order first then pay, or the reverse. Bagels: Taste ok, but texture not their strong suit, and hard to know which ones are best since every time I've been there the selection is down to just a few flavors (and invariably, not traditional favorites like onion or salt). Also have a tendency to toast enough to barely warm the bagel but not enough to improve the edges or texture. read more

For people that claim these bagels are great, they've obviously never eaten a real bagel. Bagels are supposed to be crisp on the outside and airy in the middle. This happens by boiling the bagels first then baking them. These are just baked, so they are consistently chewy and doughy and dense throughout. Add to that the fact that they microwave the eggs (eggs only take 2 minutes to scramble) and they screwed up our simple 2 person order twice (first forgetting the second person's order then getting it wrong by adding meat to a vegetarian sandwich). Also their "French Roast" coffee had been mixed with their hazelnut so that was gross if you hate hazelnut. Then you have these jerks in line vaping strawberry ecig juice with no one working there asking them to stop which ruined what little "ambience" this place might have had. I wouldn't come back. Great locally owned bagel shop. The staff is super friendly and very accommodating with any switches/special things you want in your food. I also appreciate that they don't skimp on ingredients.
