I would say they are closer to fried potatoes, and that works for me. The flavor was tops. The veggie medley was pretty good, just needed a bit of Tony's to season it up. But the cook on the was great. Broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, zucchini and yellow squash. So good. Finally, the sensation salad was good as well. Today's lineup featured a shrimp and crab pasta with two sides. I could not believe the quality of the food. It was amazing. This was fresh, gourmet food. A chef cannot be present while this food is being made. The Marie calendar yeast roll didn't even have butter on it. These are definitely not fresh ingredients being used in these dishes either. This was my first time dining in for lunch with a friend. Bergeron's has daily lunch options, and its cafeteria/ cafe style where you go to the front and get your food, then pay. My friend ordered the hamburger steak, mashed potatoes, and string beans. I ordered the white chicken lasagna, mashed potatoes, and sensation salad. The staff members were all super friendly and provided quick service. The hamburger steak reminded me a lot of the Salisbury steak for school lunch, which brought back so many memories. The white chicken lasagna was sooo good! Instead of traditional red sauce, it was made with a white sauce and had cubes of chicken in between. It was super cheesy and I enjoyed it a lot! The mashed potatoes and gravy were okay. I was not a huge fan of the gravy since it tasted a bit nutty. The sensation salad was amazing - I wish I got double salad instead of choosing the mash. I've had food from Bergeron's several times from work luncheons and decided to send my husband to grab some premade items one night for dinner just because my toddler makes me exhausted and who likes to do dishes?! They also offer hot ready made items if you wanted to sit down and eat. Everything had labeled instructions and it was all very tasty! The prices are slightly higher than I would like for something that's cold and technically I have to cook it... but I guess that's the cost of a clean kitchen. I've been driving past this place for a number of weeks now and finally got a chance to drop in. I've been intrigued by it because it is the site of several failed restaurants over the years and one begins to think that some of these places are "cursed" - even though I don't really believe in that! But from the moment they started remodeling this place - just the exterior of the building itself was something that suggested that maybe - just maybe - someone was going to figure out what the magic formula was for making this location work. Stepping inside you enter a kind of deli area with prepared foods - both individual selections (a salad, a selection of olives, etc) as well as prepared plates with several items, along with a limited selection of wines, and sauces/condiments and other sorts of specialty items you might find in a marketplace. Not a huge selection - but a good one and well presented. Once you get past there you enter the main dining area where you have larger salad choices - already prepared in a kind of eat in/take away format. On the serving line they have a rotating daily menu that is limited - but with good options. Today it was a choice between a beef lasagna, and a Zapp's crusted chicken and a turkey burger as a "healthy" option. And then there were some sides - field peas, steamed broccoli, cabbage and greens, jasmine rice pilaf, etc. I chose the Zapp's Crusted Chicken, with tiny field peas and carrot soufflé on the side - and a wheat roll thrown in at the end. The chicken was a generously sized portion and had a kind of chicken parmigiana sort of look and taste to it. Personally - I like the idea of a Zapp's crusted chicken - but wish they had chosen from among the other varieties of flavors that Zapp's has to offer. As it is, they seem to have chosen the basic, most bland flavor Zapp's has. The other things was that the chicken tasted a little dry to me. Again, it was good, but a little more moist, with say a Cajun Crawtator chip crust would have kicked it up into another level of good. The field peas were good - solid. The carrot soufflé was a nice option as well. I've had other versions of this which were sweeter - too sweet. This one was a nice balance and so came across as a cross between a vegetable and a fruit - in terms of flavor. In short, I thought it was just right. The other thing that was just right was the price - $11 for the main, two sides and a roll (no drink). The interior was clean and simple, open and bright. Nothing fancy - sort of an industrial chic. I would have thought the parallel surfaces would have made for a noisier place with terrible acoustics. But it didn't. Will definitely come back. If Yelp! Allowed half stars I would honestly give them a 3.5, but I'll err on the side of generosity for the new kid in town! read more

This place is a must try. It is completely worthy of 5 stars, and as you know, I don't give 5 stars easily. The food features a different spin on every day classics, and a lot of local treats that you probably have never eaten before. All of the dishes come from the creative mind of Chef Don Bergeron. I have been eating at City Market since it was in Mid-City; that's 10 yards if good eats!!!! My favorite is the spaghetti and meatballs!! However, when the chef decides to do it, the New Orleans Jambalaya is the only one that compares to when I grew up in NOLA. There are plenty of daily dishes and sides to choose from, and there is always desert. There is no side that compares to the Purple Island Rice! I usually dine at Bergeron's on Fridays because they have great seafood options. The shrimp is delicious but the catfish is my favorite. They also have a range of side dishes to choose from. They have plenty of vegetable options and everything is fresh. The service is friendly and it is very convenient to get a hot meal within a matter of minutes. We have eaten here several times since I am hospitalized not too far away. The deserts have always been to die for, super delicious. The meatloaf I wouldn't give to a dog. The taste and consistency was like burnt bread. There was nothing to indicate that this "meatloaf" had any meat at all. It was probably the worst meatloaf I've ever had in my life and that's counting my high school cafeteria in the 70s which had a decent meatloaf. If there's a place to give the worst meatloaf in the world award then this place has earned it in spades. Hubs had the chicken piccata which was terrible and I mean terrible. Along with the carrot soufflé which he did like. The German chocolate cake was made with homemade coconut pecan icing you could taste it in the package they were toasted at the beginning of the frosting making process. So swing and a miss On the meatloaf. Strawberry shortcake we had last week was really incredibly good and the deserts have always been solid and delicious, but there's nothing that could save that god-awful meatloaf. I didn't even attempt to cover up the burnt outside of it. Here's a hint, put some meat in the meatloaf. Truly awful. We are still trying and testing things from this place and we will keep you posted. I had to pay to the meatloaf and the rest went in the trash couldn't even eat it. I came here for brunch today. It's a such a cute place with lots of Southern charm! I love the decor and setup of cafe. The customer service was awesome and the food was very tasty. There's a store in front, where they sell wine and accessories, heat 'n eat soups and meals in which they prepare, as well as an assortment of salads and desserts. The cafe is the the back of building, and is buffet style where you order from line. I had the Brie and asparagus quiche, with baked tomato and spinach Madeline. It was delicious! Such a fun idea and unique in our capital city! Each day the chef makes something different, so visiting is an adventure! Great place for a quick lunch with co-workers. We were immediately greeted by a manager or owner when we walked in and explained how the layout worked. The front area is a deli/grab & go market, and the back is a cafeteria style line with a seating area. The workers are super friendly and patient even when they're really busy. Sign up for their email list to know what's on the menu for the day. I went when they served a portobello and spinach queadailla. It was really flavorful and healthy tasting. The mango salsa on the side was great as well. We were able to eat, enjoy ourselves, and make it back to our office withing an hour. I discovered this place last week and have eaten lunch there twice and brought 5 different dinners home. Everything is awesome!! Some of the best food in the City. Red sauce was beautifully sweet, crawfish bisque put my aunt's to shame, chicken lasagne was rich and cheesy. Desserts are crazy good. The only complaint......I'm not a fan of raisins and fruit in my bread pudding......and bread pudding is my favorite dessert. I'd like to see a white chocolate glazed bread pudding. Terrific caterer. Don did my wedding reception (100 people) and we could not have been more pleased. We are south Louisiana people, and of course we love food. These folks do too, and the passion shows. Crawfish Pasta, jambalaya; grits and grillades, meat pies, marinated shrimp, crab cakes, fried oysters, and more!! It just went on and on. The staff were great, and some of them even stopped to show us some new moves on the dance floor! The bar tending was superb. I've been a fan of this place for the last few years. The staff is always friendly, you can tell that there is a lot of effort put into making each entree and side, and the prices are very reasonable. When I tried the new location I was pleasantly surprised to find the things I liked about the old location were now available in a much nicer atmosphere. There's a nice take and bake market, a line of fresh homestyle food, and a nice seating area. It is busy during lunch but we easily found a good parking spot and were served and sat easily. They always have a few healthy options to choose from and everything is tasty. Try it out, you will like it read more

This is my one of my favorite spots in Baton Rouge. The food is always fresh and delicious, with generous portions especially for the price. The staff is always so friendly and inviting you feel like part of the family. I literally eat here 2-3 times a week. The menu changes weekly but they keep some of the regular items on the menu so there is always something new to try.
