When you see a Chinese restaurant with an awkward mid 3 ratings on yelp with people yapping about the service and hygiene, you know it'll be pretty decent. The Chinese crepe ($10.95) is a must have. The chewy crepe with soft eggs and sausage, a crunchy chip-like thing, and perfectly umami sauce, what more could you possibly ask for? The gyoza ($7.95) is fully fried so super crispy outside and juicy inside --until it sits for a bit and gets kind of sad, so better eat fast. The spicy beef tripe ($13.95) is a cold dish, the well-seasoned chewy tripe coupled with crunchy peanuts is a perfect balance. I tried several options here, covering a wide variety of options from the scallion pancake that had a fairly good flavor when dipped with a sauce, but a texture that wasn't exactly crisp nor exactly soft either. I also tried the vegetable ramen that looked a bit strange, but actually tasted quite good. Surprisingly the tomato broth actually tied all the elements together perfectly and the corn provided just the right amount of sweetness. Finally the homestyle braised eggplant was the star here, with a good strong garlic flavor and a nice semi-firm texture that wasn't mushy and a good sear for some wok hay. Overall, simple and quick. Very mediocre. Definitely over-priced. And by no means is this place Japanese (except for a few Japanese dishes). Sure it's on Mass Ave so the convenience factor and the speed of service is something to consider but how I wish I just waited at Pho Basil next door instead! Pros: was not busy, seated right away. Ordering is app-based so you can order as quickly or leisurely as you would like. Food also came out crazy fast! Our dining experience took 30 minutes in total on a weekday night. Cons: very pricey for the quality of food. I ordered the Japanese curry, which for some reason came topped with fried chicken. The curry sauce was a in a separate bowl so I guess the idea is you can top your curry at your leisure as to not make the fried chicken soggy immediately. Flavor was OK, nothing special. My husband ordered the tomato-soup ramen (we used to have this back at our hometown and we were excited to see if it was as good as it was there!), quite a disappointment as the broth was quite unflavorful, and again, not Japanese-style ramen. I have not had a good track record of going to noodle restaurants mixing regional specialties, but against my better judgement, I entered. I ordered the karaage ($7.95) to start. The bite-sized pieces were cut too small and the breading was soggy, which made this look and taste like microwave chicken nuggets. I also ordered the lamb rice noodle ($13.95). The rice noodles were overcooked, with a soggy and soft consistency. There was no springy texture. The lamb slices were also quite tough. Only their thinness saved me from a jaw exercise. I got off of work early on a Friday and I was really craving ramen for some reason despite the hot and muggy weather. I usually frequent Pho Basil along Mass Ave and I would always pass by Shin Hakata - this time around I decided to give it a try. The restaurant had one or two tables occupied when I walked in around 2:30PM or so. I was greeted warmly and seated immediately. There was a special insert within the menu that displayed a great deal: a miso ramen and fried karaage appetizer for ~$15. I pounced on that and within 5 minutes, a steaming plate of fried chicken was in front of me (6 pieces). About 2 minutes later, my miso ramen arrived. The first few pieces of chicken I had were actually kind of dry, but the last few pieces I had were juicy and succulent. I was way too hungry to care in the moment, but looking back, it must have been the difference of white/dark meat. The ramen itself was pretty standard - neither horribly disappointing nor mind-blowing. The noodles were delightfully chewy and incredibly satisfying to slurp (Do they allow for an order with extra noodles?). All in all, I do understand that I may have had a different experience given that it was pretty empty and the kitchen did not have the stress of a full dining room, but I would definitely come here for another bowl. This place is so underrated! Shin Hakata Ramen totally made me crave ramen just about every day since I've eaten here. Obviously, it's my own preference but my goodness I can't stop thinking about it! This modern-day ramen joint geeked it out in a fun way with some anime decor in one of the more roomy ramen spots Boston. It's located right on Mass Ave where there's a bunch of neighboring restaurant along this strip. And, street meter parking is intimidating around here but I've managed to always find a space. Tonkotsu Ramen- I have to talk about the noodles. These perfectly al dente-style noodles soaked up the broth superbly. Nothing I hate more than soggy, translucent, overcooked noodles and these strands were the perfect texture. The broth was slightly oily but rich with flavor. The pork was tender and they nailed it with the soft-boiled egg. So well-balanced with the salty-soy yolk with a hint of sweetness and the subtle egg white exterior. Spicy Tonkotsu Ramen- Everything else is pretty similar except the broth was just the right burn for me and was more on the mild side per my friend, who can tolerate painful spice. This bowl didn't lose any flavor and having the beansprouts, bamboo shoots help break up the spiciness so my mouth didn't feel numb afterward. Overall Service: They were terrific and fast. Came here for the first time for dinner. First impression is that is clean and orderly place. I liked the open, simple and clean lines design and decor. There were multiple servers on staff and they came over immediately to take out order. My party and I ordered the miso ramen, Japanese curry, gyoza, chicken karage, chuka likado and unagi don. All dishes came out quickly and piping hot (just like it ought to be!) I really enjoyed the flavorful gyoza. The miso ramen was also good and had a clean broth which is a little different from other ramen places. I did feel like the broth could use a little richer flavor but otherwise ok. The noodles for the ramen were quite fresh and unique (not the traditional yellow ramen) and they were rather tasty. My friends ate their dishes in a hurry, expressing how delicious their dishes were. I have never had the baby octopus dish before and the appearance freaked me out a bit at first but I tried one and it was actually pretty good (taste and texture is a bit like pickled vegetable). I been coming to this location since 2017 and things have changed in this restaurant since last year. I see new people and servers. Perhaps, the owner has changed. Upon arriving, I had a difficult time with the server on right waving in the picture with black t-shirt. She was not accommodating and willing to charge me extra in every way possible even when it was a simply request. She's extremely rude and difficult to deal with. The manager (in the left) demanded a tip after I finished my Ramen. I have NEVER in my entire life had a server and a manager come to me to argue to give them a tip. I only tip when I feel the service was perfect but this one wasn't. The woman on right (the server with black tee) said that she and her manager needed and demanded an explanation as to why I didn't tip. I also have never in my life been asked to give an explanation to a server why I didn't tip so this argument went on for 5 minutes. After everything was said and done, I told both of them that I will never in my life come back to give them business and the woman with black shirt said "that's fine we don't need customers who don't tip". As soon as the server waving in the picture with black t-shirt notice I took her picture she waved and then left running towards the back. These two sharks should be ashamed of themselves for trying to manipulate their customers to tip them specially when they provide horrific customer service! My review is to let ppl know what to expect from this place from now on. I wish it was a pleasant funny experience but it wasn't, I am concerned by the way they approach customers to demand tips. read more
