I have been coming here for a good 6 years or so for allergy and asthma medication maintenance and checkups and immunotherapy (allergy shots). I found out that they can make your allergy shot serum for you and you can take it to whatever clinic you prefer if coming to their clinic is not convenient for you. Which, let's face it, if you're starting allergy shots you're likely going to be there around twice a week for a good year and $6 in parking fees Downtown twice a week really adds up fast. I decided to go this route and bring my serum to my local clinic for injections and let me tell you: they didn't really know what they were doing. They were actually kind of uncomfortable with the whole thing. Then I had a systemic reaction (slight anaphylaxis) because I am sure they misdosed me and I HAD IT. They were contemplating stabbing me with an epi pen and sending me to the hospital but I convinced them to just give me a shot of benedryl. I said that I am never going anywhere but Asthma and Allergy Specialists for my shots ever again. And I haven't. The one time I did have a systemic at the A+A clinic they dealt with it in a professional and calm manner - they gave me an injection of epinephrine (not a stab of a pen!), some crackers and water, and made me rest in their room under supervision for an hour. They are called specialists for a reason. I pony up that parking cash. They have an allergy injection lab that is open 4 days a week, no appointment required. Just check-in with Lisa at the front desk, pop in to the lab, they have your serum, you get your shot(s), you wait the required 30 minutes and you leave. They know what they're doing. Kari is the best! For your convenience here is their INJECTION LAB hours: Monday: 8:45 AM - 4:45 PM Tuesday: 8:00 AM - 4:45 PM Wednesday: Closed Thursday: 1:00 - 4:45 PM Friday: 8:30 - 11:30 AM and 1:30 - 4:30 PM Here are my ONLY cons: -The parking sucks and they do not validate (but they are skyway connected so you can get creative. Try bundling a visit into a Target trip - they are a block away; spend $20 at Target and get a 1 hour free parking voucher in their lot then walk over to the Med Art Bldg!) -The staff attends seminars and training events, etc a few times a year and unless you see the old school printed note on the door of the clinic you won't know if they're closed or not. Which is a pain in the ass when you have to pay for parking and drive downtown and take time off work, yada yada yada. PLEASE PUT THESE EVENTS ON YOUR WEBSITE! It's 2017. (On that note, I guess it's a good thing that they're constantly going to seminars and trainings - I suppose that's how you become specialist!) HOT TIP: The clinic doubles as a research facility (CRI) for Allergy/Asthma/Migraine meds. If you're interested in being a guinea pig you can get paid pretty handsomely for it. I've done it once or twice myself! I grew an extra arm but hey, who doesn't need an extra arm?! Check it out: https://criminnesota.com/volunteer/current-studies-2/

But early in the appointment, he made a comment that was unnecessary and a bit demeaning. My determination to form a positive connection with the doctor lead me to overlook the comment. But shortly after that, he said that my strong respiratory reaction to a particular toxin "doesn't happen". A well-trained physician would have said, "That's a strong reaction, can you share more about what happened?". Or, "You had a strong reaction to harmful toxins called mycotoxins, which can cause significant illness for some people. You made a good decision to seek treatment for your bronchial inflammation." When I finally accepted that the doctor was demonstrating no sense of curiosity or interest in understanding my experience, I shifted into be-the-observer mode, and managed to sit to the end of the appointment, which was much too long. During the last half of the appointment, I observed that my experiences were repeatedly dismissed and/or devalued. I quietly left the appointment feeling disappointed and disregarded.

The billing office, on the other hand, is a complete mess and nightmare. They called me repeatedly asking for my insurance information despite me giving it to them at the appointment. Then, they claimed there was a billing issue. 7 months later, I'm told my account was "keyed in incorrectly" (by the supervisor), that a different insurance company paid my claim and that they zeroed out my account; I think as a fix(?). They also gave me the wrong patient name which raised questions as to which account they were actually looking at when speaking to me on the phone. The supervisor came on the line to explain what happened ignoring the mistake on their end. Supposedly they will be sending me documentation of all of this in writing but I'd be very careful using this clinic due to health insurance billing.

I keep coming back because this office is downtown and skyway connected and also Dr. Halverson seems to be a reasonable guy. I don't like having to come in every year to get my meds filled but he doesn't require an abundance of unnecessary tests. I also walk away with coupons and product samples to help get my copay's worth. He gets cost/benefit and doesn't push over the top (read $$$) treatment. I have to knock it down a few stars due to the conditions of this office. It hasn't been remodeled in decades and looks decrepit. Most of what's in this office probably would be considered vintage. They also seem to always have students around, which is awkward and slows things down. They also don't ask you if you mind if a student joins your appointment, which I think is a bit rude even if I'd say it's ok if they asked.

I haven't nailed it down, as to what makes me react, which is my reasoning for wanting an allergy test. After telling Dr. Philip Halverson about my symptoms and experiences, he decided that I am not experiencing enough of a reaction and I am free to continue testing my reactions on my own. He even suggesting that I keep a log of what I eat and react to, how nice?! Oh, my head feeling fuzzy, my difficulty breathing, and my entire upper body becoming red and blotchy isn't enough of a reaction? This is by far the most frustrating experience I have ever had, dealing with a medical professional! Not to mention, the whole 15 minutes I got to spend with Dr. Halverson cost me $40 co-pay AND $190 appointment bill! So not only was it a huge waste of time and money, but I am back at square one with having to spend more money and time to get an actual opinion. I am not even going to call it a second opinion, because the first wasn't even that, it was ignorance. I can honestly say that I will never be back and I will try my best to persuade everyone to go elsewhere.

The office is clean, organized, and incredibly professional--and I was taken back with zero waiting, which already felt like a dream. Such a small gesture, but wow did it make a difference. It told me immediately that they pay attention to comfort and treat patients like actual humans, not numbers. Dr. Vox gave me suggestions and insights I haven't heard in over two years, and I walked out feeling more hopeful and informed than I have in a long time. You can tell he genuinely knows his craft and cares about helping you understand what's going on. If you're dealing with voice issues or anything ENT-related, I can't recommend this team enough.
