Went to Bernheim for a short walk and enjoyed being able to see the wooden trolls on the trail. It was kinda difficult for me to find the visitor center after parking since the the visitor center is small, but the worker I spoke with was really nice and really helpful in pointing me in the right direction of the trail with the trolls. I followed the map and directions she gave me and it was difficult finding the trail. I think the trail itself could have been better marked because there were also a lot of others on the trail who were also getting lost.
Bernheim has become the Louisville area's most #magical place. The giants are a big draw from around the country. The Tinman was an added bonus. Playground close to Nature Center has treehouses too! Beavers encouraged to thrive and build dams. Miles of Hiking trails are the best; Native plants and trees are a big draw. Canopy Tree bridge, so many sculptures -- So much to do 16000+ acres Check out the many artworks and sculptures like interactive Earth Measure Sculpture made of stacked limestone by Matt Weir. Visited 12 July 2025. We decided on a quick weekend trip to see the giants. It was approximately a 45-minute drove from Fort Knox. I had read previous reviews about a recommended donation fee of $10 for entry. Upon entering, the attendant asked if we would like to make the donation. It was actually $15 per vehicle and he asked how many people were in the vehicle (likely to track the number of visitors to the park). Since we had one person with a leg injury, we did not do much walking. We were able to drive along the paved road to the Fire Tower Loop. I walked less than half mile to the Fire Tower structure. Because of the initial incline, it can feel challenging if you are not fit. But, it was a quick walk. There is a bench at the base of the tower and a clearing, but otherwise, the tower is surrounded by bushes. Only one giant is visible from the road. Another giant, the Mama Loumari giant was about 50-75 meters off the road and was an effortless walk, but because of trees and other bushes, you could not see it from the road. We did not search for the third giant. There was ample parking around each of the sites we passed and we were able to get parking immediately when we stopped. There we two food trucks on site, I think one was Kona Ice, but I don't remember what the other one was. We did not use the bathroom facilities, so I can't speak about that.
Though the heat kept us from walking to 'Little Nis' and his sister 'Little Elina', we did see 'Mama' in all her pregnant glory, and we appreciated Nis from the car. These sculptures -by Danish artist, Thomas Dambo- have been in place since 2019 when I actually met Dambo, who was putting finishing touches on Mama. Bernheim continues to add artworks to the forest, including some installations in L.A.N.D. and a tin man sculpture. Many young pre-school children were touring while we were there today. The gift shop/visitors center is very nice, and the clerks there and the park rangers are all very helpful. Best to visit when it's not in the 90s.
Great park just outside of Louisville (roughly a 25-35 minute drive). During the week it's free but they do ask for a car donation for the park. Will receive a map upon entry. We usually park at the visitors center and you can walk from there to see the Giants. They also have a great kids play/discovery park area here. Lots of shaded picnic tables here too. They have restrooms at the visitors center and outside the discovery area. To see the new Tin Man sculpture, you'll drive about 5 minutes to the Jackson Yoe trailhead (from the visitors center) on Bernheim Forest Rd.
Bernheim is an amazing place to go!! I'm sure all of this has been said before but here's my review. The Playcosystem is a highlight. Basically it's a natural playground for kids to play on. Fallen logs to climb on, obstacle course, sand pit area, etc. Tons of hiking paths, different parts of the forest look completely different. There are plenty of art installations, like the giants, and other statues and sculptures. The gift shop is nice, although oddly I wish they had more Bernheim branded things to purchase.
We visited Bernheim twice this week. The first visit was on a Wednesday morning for a dedication ceremony on the Meditation Trail and then lunch at the on-site cafe. Parking is plentiful and the signage is clearly marked. Walking trails are well maintained in a natural state, which is beautiful and much appreciated. The pollinator garden was a pleasant place to take pause and included a sensory experience component. Our second visit was on Saturday evening for the annual CONNECT event with live music and art installations around Lake Nevin, as well as a VIP cocktail option. We thoroughly enjoyed this experience and were impressed and delighted with the offerings. Food and drink and setup were all worthy of a future repeat. We did feel one of the musical performers was too mature for the audience on site at 7 PM, specifically the "f-bombs" were cringeworthy with elementary aged kids running around near the Garden Pavilion. Maybe a warning next time or a later time for this set? Food trucks were on site and kiosks were also scattered along the trails with art displays, crafts, and educational elements. A pop up thunderstorm cut our visit short, which was a shame. Bernheim is truly a beautiful place.
Voted must see for 2025 so we just had to stop in and visit with the giants. It's free to enter but a donation is always appreciated. The hike is easy, flat and you could push a baby stroller if needed. It's a total 2 mile trail to see all three giants but there are many more if you are feeling adventurous. Lots of restrooms available throughout if needed..we can after the visitor center was closed so we can only speak to the customer service at the gate attendant. Provided us with a map, and there was clear signage where to park. Lovely flowers and manicured trails. Please spray because it's tick season here. Great stop did not disappoint..
How is this place free?? I gladly paid the suggested donation of $15 a car but that still felt like a steal. I live in Indy so it was a good 2-hour drive, but I would be here every weekend if I lived closer. We came for the Forest Giants but were impressed by the size and scope of the park. Right off the bat, we were greeted by a turtle crossing the road. Then a family of geese. Then a rabbit. The visitors center is chock full of nature-related items. And all the staff we met were incredibly friendly. It was rainy if the day we went so we bought some much-needed ponchos and an umbrella. They also have a cafe with sandwiches and coffee. The Forest Giants were unreal. They were also fairly accessible. While they do have a 2-mile trail to see all the giants. You can also park nearby to two of them and walk just a short way (one was paved and one was not).
Have been wanting to come here for awhile and what do you know? It was on the way from Kentucky to our flight out of Nashville!! So excited to finally see the giants. There is a suggested donation of $15 per car but they are so nice about whatever donation you may want to give so it's so worth to support this place. We couldn't have picked a better day than today! The weather was perfect! The fall colors were amazing! Parking is easy right by the visitors center. Loved looking around in the center to see what we can buy. Restrooms were convenient by the door and clean. And you can walk right back out and start your hike to see the giants and surroundings. So many beautiful picturesque spots! The trees are colorful! The hollys are budding. And the giants are adorable! Easy 2 mile hike to see them. They have maps and signs that make it so clear! We still got lost but thank God for GPS and the map lol made our way back to see the sister giant and looped back to the visitors center. Wish we had more time to explore but we had to rush to Nashville for a flight. But I highly recommend a stop here if you can on a gorgeous day like today and picnic and hike around. I so enjoyed it! And if by chance we are near here again with the kids we'd love to come back!
My husband and I passed this place on our way to Four Roses. We decided to stop on our way out. Unfortunately our visit got rained out. We decided to drive to the visitor center and came across a Thomas Dambo troll! I had to do some googling and found out there are actually 3 on property. Even though we didn't get to fully walk the whole trail due to the rain, I had a lot of fun driving through the property and to go look for the other 2 trolls.
Surrounded by the classic Kentuckian horses and distilleries, this extensive tract of forest is one of the few in the state that's really developed for easy visitor use. Starting in a valley, a road heads past a visitor center (which looked nice, but was only open for limited hours) and up a hill into thick forest. It's not always clear what places mean when they say "suggested donation", but upon entering here, they literally asked me if I would like to donate, and then how much, so for someone who is short on cash would like to enjoy the park, I don't think they'd stop you. Conversely, if you have a car full of kids, the $15 would be quite a good deal. There were extensive paths in the lower portion of the park. You do have to put in some work to get to the various sculptures-including the forest giants-but this area is generally quite well manicured. The ponds were a bit scummy-which may be natural but isn't that visually appealing. Otherwise, the juxtaposition of various art objects on the natural surroundings was quite magical. Going up into the trees yields several trails and a walkway that leads one out into the treetops, where you get a distinctive experience and a cool breeze. I gave it a couple of hours to explore and it would have been easy to spend most of the day driving from Louisville or Lexington. They're open until sunset or a bit after, but I did leave before that, mainly out of not wanting to drive in the dark.
I loved my visit to Bernheim Forest! I can't believe how long it took for me to visit. I visited on a sunny, 75 degree, Saturday afternoon. There was a good amount of people but it didn't feel crowded. There first stop was a little gift shop with and information desk, snack bar, and bathrooms. From there the trail to the forest giants was super easy to follow. After walking to the giants, I drove the path to see the Tin Man and canopy walks. I love how accessible all the big attractions were and how beautiful the forests are. It's worth stopping in if you're visiting the area or a local! read more
Bernheim is one my husband's and my favorite places to get away from it all and enjoy being with nature. After an unusually cold winter, we recently had a day warm enough day to return to Bernheim, and we chose a shorter trail due to time constraints. We hiked the Knob Top Trail and really enjoyed the peacefulness on the trail (we saw no other people on this trail today). The Knob Top is not one of the more popular trails, but we really enjoyed it. It is rated by Bernheim as "Difficult," but I would say it is moderate. It can be hiked as an in and out (this is what we chose to do) or as a connector between "Two Ponds Loop' and "Lake Nevin Loop." It is a short trail, only 0.5 mi in and 0.5 miles out. The terrain is packed dirt, and as expected, included tree roots, rocks, mounds, ruts, and other obstacles. The hike is a gradual incline to the top (Inspiration Knob) where there is a pretty, green, decommissioned water tank. This was a perfect, short hike to ease into hiking season! I wanted to see the Giants in the forest. They didn't disappoint. The trail is to hike, part is in a field and it is kept mowed for easy access. The lake and bridge is beautiful. I believe it is a must see for all ages. read more

If you enjoy nature and hiking then perhaps Bernheim Forest is for you. OK, you don't necessarily have to like hiking but enjoy the outdoors and seeing the art sculptures by Danish artist Thomas Dambo then go to Bernheim and pend the day. For those who live in the Louisville area it's a short drive down I-65 at exit 112 and perhaps a mile further. read more
Where do I even begin reviewing one of the most beautiful and utterly peaceful places I have ever visited? From the whimsical Forest Giants, to breathtaking art installations scattered around the forest, this place has so many facets to enjoy! Children can play at the playcosystem or climb into the "spirit nest" to enjoy a breathtaking view. The nearby cafe and visitors center serves delicious sandwiches with veggies, harvested from the "edible garden" across the way. A more recent adaptation is the "silent garden". A place of quiet and peace dedicated for those who have sensory processing difficulties. Whether it's to take a relaxing walk around the lake or to sit in one of the many meadows to meditate: Bernheim Forest provides joy to anyone. read more

So beautiful! Only got to walk a little but the drive around was beautiful too! We were in a hurry so we only got to see little Nis and happens during the drive out we saw Mama Lou and stopped by to take some pictures. read more
If you're on the way to bourbon tasting in Bardstown, drop by here and enjoy the nature before drinking. We stopped by here because I wanted to see the giants. They have big wooden giants around the park, 3 to be exact. To get in it's a $10 donation, optional but that's how they keep up the park. Walked to all 3 giants. It was a good 2.3 mile walk. Not too bad but keep those legs moving. In the summer I can tell everything will be green and blooming! read more

My daughter-in-law recently hosted a birthday party for my son in the Garden Pavilion at the Bernstein Arboretum. The pavilion was an amazing venue for a birthday party with plenty of seating, parking and a small kitchenette. The Arboretum itself was awesome. From the pavilion, you had views of the lake and access to walking trails. After the party, we explored the Arboretum itself. There are four Woodland Giants - giant wood cravings - scattered around the park. There is the Canopy Trrewalk - an elevated walkway 75' about the forest floor - literally in the treetops. The visitor center was closed when we were there so I don't know what it contained. The ponds are teeming with wildlife - we saw dozens of turtles and lots of fish. The Bernstein Arboretum is a real treasure and is a fun place to spend an afternoon. read more
When we first got here, my boyfriend and I didn't realize how big this place would be! We also didn't realize that it was voluntary to pay but we did pay since we weren't going to say no lol. It also was nice to know how much this nature park has to offer. It was wonderful how there were trails to walk along, different ponds, and even an edible garden that provides some foods to the cafe at the visitor center. They put a lot of care and thought to this place and I appreciated that and so did the kids and families we saw. I thought the giants were awesome! The signs outside are helpful to find the giants, but it definitely helps to have a map. If you're in the area, definitely come check this place out. Preferably before 4 pm since the cafe and visitor center closes at 4 pm. We didn't get to try the food or check out the center but it looked cute! I would come again to check out the trails since we came a little later in the day and they close around 8/9 pm. Also, please bring bug repellent since there are ticks. Ooh and be ready to take picture too since you can see cute turtles and the giants are nice to take pictures with lol. read more
Each time I visit Bernheim I am in awe and repeat over and over "how beautiful". Why do I wait so long to come back? It's not even a long drive from Louisville. We went to visit the Giants but we stayed much longer to explore the Sun & Shade trail and Canopy Walk. Entrance is a suggested donation of $10. Memberships are also available for those that visit often and/or want to support this forest. We visited on Memorial Day, which was gorgeous, and were able to follow the crowd to the visitor parking. The crowd also led us to begin the path to the Giants. I appreciated how respectful families were at standing in line to take turns in front of the Giants for pictures. I didn't feel crowded at all. The lakes are gorgeous. A postcard of sun, clouds and a green backdrop. Many fish and turtles caught our attention. Periodically you could hear frog talking. The Sun & Shade trail was wonderful. The sun was brutal and it was a great option to walk back toward the visitor center. Lots of opportunities to take pictures. Who knew fallen trees could make you ooh and ahh? After getting back to the car we opted to find the Canopy Walk. It's higher up, major elevation. Several trails are found nearby and offer a more advanced exploration. Only one group at a time can go to the edge of the Canopy Walk. We snapped several pictures and after feeling some natural swaying of the bridge, I was ready to change places with the next guests! There's so much more to explore at Bernheim. Easy, moderate and advanced trails are outlined on their site and trail map. A visitor center and cafe are onsite. (Currently closed due to Covid, June 2021, but several porta potties). They also hosts several events and hikes. read more

We always enjoy stopping here when we are in the area. Great variety of trees, birds and other wildlife. A donation of $15 per car is requested at the entrance. They have a gift shop and clean facilities. It's fun to watch the Barn Swallows flying in and out of their nests under the roof of the gazebo shaped building by the lake. It's a lovely break in bourbon country. read more
Bernheim forest is a large and beautiful park located of the clermont exit right before you hit the jim beam distillery. Over the last 20 years or so my wife and my family have visited this park frequently for the beautiful scenery and small walking trails. They also have a visitor center and a small cafe on weekends. Usually if you visit on a weekday there is no entry fee. However on weekends they do make you do a donation fee. Over the last few years bernheim has added the Forrest giants which has made the park extremely popular and tourist attraction for all local families and families traveling from out of town. They are really cool looking and the artist did a superb job on them. Very nice touch adding them. Kudos to the park engineer who came up with this idea. I will tell people that outside the really cool Forrest giants bernheim still has a lot of fun walking trails and pretty open spaces to explore. We did it for years before the kids wanted to only see the forest giants. This park does have a lot to offer. I personally like to attend on a weekday if possible because there is less traffic and no fees. This is also a very popular park to do some dog walking. Every-time we go my kids end up begging us to adopt a puppy. Overall fun park that is worth checking out. read more

A beautiful park with several trails to go on a hike. We went to see the giants but only saw one because we could not find the other two. They are giants, so why couldn't we find the other two? Maybe because we are directionally challenged? Probably so, oh well we had fun looking for them, lol read more
This was a recommendation from a local at the hotel. Originally I went there to see the wooden statues that shoes but there was so much more. There are trails everywhere here; some paved, some gravel, and others are trimmed grass. All trails are relatively easy and I probably walked over 10 miles with maybe 30 more to go. If I were to do a picnic date it would be here. There are a lot of private shaded areas and several ponds with small rivers. They have a playground for kids and one large lake available for fishing. If you don't want to picnic they have a small restaurant on-site. Surprisingly I did not get bit once and there were a ton of butterflies flying around. read more

Hiking trails, forest giants, artists in residence, lakes, hills, and an edible garden make up this wonderland of nature. We decided to come on the recommendation of a coworker and enjoyed our time. What an awesome Arboretum! We made the drive from Lexington to get outside and check out the giants of the forest and absolutely loved the experience! They accept donations as an entry fee and suggest $15 per car to enjoy all that they offer! The edible garden is neat! The gift shop is full of awesome gifts and memorabilia! They have a cafe in the gift shop which was decently priced. I traveled with myself and 3 kids age 12,7 and 19m with my oldest who uses a wheelchair. Once we entered I asked about accessibility getting to the giants and was told that it was accessible. The path starts out paved from behind the gift shop down a zigzag path down a hill and it is paved until you cross a wooden bridge and the path went from paved to gravel to loose dirt. Once we hit loose dirt we had to turn back as it wasn't wheelchair friendly. I did notice several parking areas upon leaving where I believe you can park to access the other giants but walking the path giant to giant wasn't possible with one in a wheelchair. Overall I'm glad we went but it wasn't as accessible as I was led to believe but it was nice to enjoy the outdoors. read more
This was the perfect spot to go see some nature and Giants. First giant was easy to find since you saw it from the road. Park at the visitor center. We followed the yellow foot prints but we couldn't find the other two giants. We were given a map at the gate when we came in early around 9 am. Map was confusing and the finding of the other two were hard. We even tried driving to another parking lot with signs but nothing. It was a nice brisk walk. Trees have signs up to inform you what it is. There was art throughout. Wish I lived closer bc it would be a definitely a favorite place to exercise. read more

I only budgeted enough time to see the giants (1.5-2 hours) but wish I could've stayed longer. I definitely want to go back. It was still worth the $10 suggested-but-not-mandatory donation. Friendly staff, beautiful grounds, and tons of trails and space to explore. Beautiful fall colors too. So fun that they "hid" the giants so you can't just do a drive by.
