Very cute looking American style diner in country New South Wales, and that's where the positives end for me. We've tried this a few times over the course of a few years -- reuben, burgers, fries, and shakes -- and nothing really hit the spot. I will admit that having grown up eating at some amazing delis and American diners, I have a bias in terms of what "good/great" is for this type of food so I am definitely bringing that perspective to my review. Are you kidding me. A MUST when within an hour of Moss Vale. I've travel far and wide. You will not have a better milk shake. The burgers are worth the drippings on your shirt. It might be a bit pricey, but selling your Audi or Land Rover. The owner will thank you for it. read more

I was recommended the pastrami sandwich, despite making it clear i was an experienced purveyor in smoked deli meats. Working through the layers, I was first met with untoasted, slightly stale bread. The mustard was a familiar constant, but the pastrami left much to be desired. Definitely overcooked, not too distinguishable from bacon. At a price point of ~$20 I wouldn't be able to recommend this sandwich to future patrons. read more

Arrived about 11.30am and got to snag the last booth near the front window - Perfect spot to people watch. Ordered the double cheese and cheese burger with cheese fries and chocolate & strawberry milkshake with malt to wash it all down with. When in 'Moss Vale' you may as well go all the way! Double cheese was tasty but had a lot of meat so maybe not the best for your first meal of the day. The cheese fries were delicious! I would recommend them. Milkshakes were good. The guy who took our order was a character and added to the experience. Didn't get to try any pies which was a shame as we were both pretty stuffed with what we got. read more

I was not impressed with owners attitude towards his younger members of staff. To me, that's a very poor reflection on the business.

Sadly Bernie's Diner did not quite hit the true diner experience. The burgers were good and delivered in little red baskets but there were no fries as standard so when my basket came out minus fries I was bitterly disappointed! Fries, pickles and coleslaw would do it! When I ordered the chocolate shake I was told how great it would be and it wasn't. Too chocolatey and therefore not easy to drink it all. The vinyl seats in the booths were also damaged and not in good repair. Which is distracting to sit on. I wanted to love Bernie's! I was prepared to regularly visit if it hit the right diner note...... but no return visit for me. I wonder why in Australia we just can't perfect the diner experience. read more

An extremely cute diner in the most random of places. The Pastrami sandwiches are the best...you must get it. I made the mistake of ordering a pulled pork burger my first time and then I had a bite of my friend's sandwich and realised that I had ordered wrong. The cheese fries also look heavenly...they appear to melt the cheese all over, almost like they have melted cheese and then toss the fries in it but that might not be scientifically possible but the outcome is the same. The wings however are not good. They have a buttermilk batter but I found them to be lacking in flavour and even the actual meat on them wasn't to my liking although I can't quite put my finger on it. If you are on a road trip or live in Moss Vale you definitely should go here! read more

Went here for dinner whilst on business in the area, on the outside this place looked really cool. Walked up to the counter they had American soft drinks and a decent looking menu so I was excited. I asked a few questions to the female server and she wasn't overly helpful, was after some recommendations seeing as it was my first time here. Asked her if the burgers were American style which she said yes. I decided to order a burger, chicken wings, slaw & a milkshake. I had to go up and retrieve my drink they don't bring this out to you however they did deliver my food. The place hasn't been kept up well, the seats all had large tears in them which is a shame, they certainly didn't look very good anymore. The burger came out and it looked like your standard burger from a takeaway shop that you'd pay $6 not $11 for. It was certainly not a American style, no mustard, no pickle and worst of all was the presence of beetroot. Don't worry I love a good Aussie burger but I was after the good ol American experience. Meat was nice enough but overall it was just average. The wings and slaw came out, slaw was a decent size enough for a few people and tasty. The chicken wings were full size wings and unfortunately tasteless. The shake was the saving grace it was actually fairly decent. Overall certainly not worth $37 and i won't be back. read more

The owners have obviously gone to quite some effort to replicate a home-style retro American diner. The interior and decor are quite authentic and the menu includes predominantly American diner classics along with imported sodas and American beer. The staff were very friendly and the overall atmosphere was busy yet fun. With these great first impressions, my expectations were high - I ordered a cheeseburger and fries. The fries were crisp and delicious but the burger was disappointing. It looked and tasted like a standard aussie style burger, the kind you'd find in an aussie takeaway shop. The patty, albeit sufficiently grilled was noticeably soft and mushy, almost like a rissole. The bun was a standard sesame bun, not the smaller, softer slightly sweeter style bun you'd find with a classic American burger. (Although Bernie's should be commended for melting the cheese on top of the patty on the grill, this is so rare in Australia). There was nothing intrinsically wrong with the cheeseburger; but it wasn't anything close to an American style burger which is what I was expecting. Perhaps the owners have adapted the burgers to suit the local market. I'd be interested in trying some other menu items next time, like the Reuben, but I'd definitely give any of the burgers a miss. read more

4 o'clock on a Monday arvo and this place is packed... American-styled diner with the usual fixings. We just dropped in for coffee, ended up with milkshakes, a slice of pecan pie and a scoop of ice cream. I want to come back for lunch (or breakfast). It's a little pricey for a diner, but I have to try the double Bernie burger!! read more

Bernies is fantastic! Great friendly staff, always with a smile on their faces. The burgers are your your classic old style burger with real taste and flavour, not your typical over produced junk that you find in almost every other fast food place these days. I regularly visit Bernies Diner and would highly recommend anyone else to do the same. read more

Just went and ordered 2 burgers when i watched the cook bare handed place my food on a plate, he then shook to patrons hands whom had just come in and used the same hand to move my food to in a box. Why no gloves? wont go back again. read more

This place is unique in the Southern Highlands and the only source for some US grub I hadn't tasted in my 25 years in Oz. Pastrami, onion rings, yum yum. Lots of character, all based on the classic US diner with a lot of passion from the owners and staff. Parking is easy on Moss Vale's main strip and there are lots of other interesting places to check out while you walk off all those delicious mega-calories. read more
