I came in with my daughter and we were warmly greeted by reception and their shop cat, Ember. I…read moretold them I was looking for a cat that would be able to get along with my child. So, they invited me in to the cat area. A worker there that works with the cats introduced me to a few and answered all of my questions. I was pleased to see that the cats all looked like they were well treated, provided toys, well fed, etc. I was allowed all the time I wanted to hang around different cats and get a feel of how we might get along if I were to adopt them. I ended up adopting a bonded pair of orange male cats, about 4 months old. I had to fill out some paperwork for the adoption process. On adoption, the shelter gave me a nice starting supply of treats, food, litter, and toys. From filling out the paperwork, I had the cats home within 48 hours. The fee for adopting the cats was $60 for both of them. Both of my cats were up to date on their shots and were neutered. I have had the cats for a couple months now. At first, they were a little shy in their new environment, but once they got comfortable, they have been model cats. Sometimes, new cats will have issues with using their litter box or eating properly, but these cats didn't let the move affect their appetite or litter habits. They are still a little nervous around my daughter, which is understandable since she can be very erratic, but they are warming up to her as I get her to understand that she has to be patient, calm, and easy with the cats to get them to like her better. And, as a pleasant surprise, one of the cats has a wonderful habit of waking me up from nightmares and snapping me out of night terrors. The first time, I just thought it was a coincidence, but as it keeps happening, I feel more at ease going to bed. After having the cats home for a few weeks, the humane society reached out to me by phone to see how things were going with the cats - whether they were using their litter boxes, whether they were eating well, how they were adjusting to the home, etc. It was nice to hear the follow up call and really showed that they care very much about the animals that they look after. The absolute hardest part about dealing with the Humane Society was only adopting two cats. I would very highly recommend that someone looking for a pet to look into the Humane Society.

(I blame the park by our house in Chicago that is NOT a dog park but people treated it like it was and let their off leash dogs run, jump, bark and yip at my son). We were FIRMLY told they only accept appointments (nowhere does it say that on their website) and they NEVER let anyone into the kennels, to which my thought was, What are you hiding? I was disappointed because I thought this might be a sure fire way to help him get over his fear of dogs (maybe just for a day) but back to the drawing board I go.

But then Dr Almus sold the business to a company called National Veterinary Associates (NVA). Once they purchased the practice that's when we noticed the cost of getting our pets taken care of started to rise even more and certain services being cut. Yet, we stayed loyal. The last straw so to speak was last December (2025). First off, three different vets misdiagnosed our cat for numerous months. Then, because Nickerson was listed as having a USDA veterinarian and we needed our two cats to have a specific health form filled out for international travel. With everything going on at that time, I was pretty sure that this step was going to be a non issue and these forms needed to be filled out within a certain time frame before traveling internationally. So I call to make the appointment and was advised that the person I had the plans with had been 'let go' and no longer worked there. When I brought up the fact that I needed the forms filled out by Dr. Merle, I was advised that they would call back in a couple of days after their staff meeting with corporate. No one called back, so I did and was advised that they are no longer offering that service. (Mind you, getting two cats this official health report/paperwork is NOT inexpensive.) I immediately requested that they email my records for our two cats to me as soon as possible, which they did. I quickly got online and found that St Joseph Animal Wellness had USDA certified vets and called them. They were amazingly helpful and kind, got our cats in, properly diagnosed our one cat, and they were able to get us our health certificates within the proper timeframe that we needed. My advise for anyone in the southwest Michigan area is support your locally owned veterinarian clinic/health centers for your pets. Vet care for our pets is already getting really costly, no need to line the pocket of some faceless corporation who doesn't really care about your pets or situation.

The staff is great, you can tell they love these dogs. The facility was pretty nice - like a real house, with a side yard that the pups can run around in. The pups were all on the large side - I saw a couple really great dogs. I LOVE the big dogs, but I was really looking for a smaller dog. Definitely recommended to find your furry best friend!

NLOL offers two week foster period before adoption, which is a wonderful mechanism to get to know the dog before the big commitment. I am still in the middle of the foster period but I am just beyond impressed by the support I was given. It has been an wonderful experience so far. I wanted to volunteer with animals, and I was frustrated by the larger organizations extremely limited opportunities and complicated process to volunteer. No, I didn't want to read a 50 page manual and take a test just to clean cages. I wanted to make a big difference in the lives of dogs and help Chicago become a no-kill city. Surely, it couldn't be that hard to find an organization with no red tape and an easy process to volunteer. Enter: New Leash on Life. I found them about 2.5 years ago on this Yelp page with their address listed downtown. I later realized this downtown address was only a PO Box which means NLOL does not have a physical location/adoption center. The implication of this is that all dogs go straight from rescue into foster homes until they find their forever families. This process can take weeks or sometimes months - depending on the dog. Don't let the uncertainty of a timeline deter you - fostering for New Leash is an absolute dream and here are my top three reasons why: 1. Unparalleled people - the nicest and most sincere adoption counselors. They constantly check up on the pups, their progress, and making sure you as a foster have everything you need. Not just via email- typically by text messages which means a quick response time. 2. Super flexible - a. Vacation or trip? No problem! New Leash will work with you and your schedule b. Work long hours? No problem! New Leash can schedule a walker to come during the day 3. And last but not least, THE DOGS. They really know how to pick them. Every dog that I've fostered has been kind hearted, adorable, and an A++ cuddler. Every dog deserves the right to a loving, safe home. Yes fostering is a short term arrangement, but it's a critical piece to helping these pups find their long term forever. Nothing makes me happier than seeing every dog I've fostered thriving in their forever homes. If you're on the fence about fostering, just try it. Anyone who loves dogs can do it and do it successfully. It is an extremely rewarding process and this organization makes it SO easy.

We had our 13…read moreyear old pet pass away and were looking for a pup to replace her as our other dog was in need of a companion. We hoped to get one relatively quickly. We filled out an application for a pup they had and got an email confirmation the application was being sent to Heartland. To be sure they got it, I sent them an email directly with a summary of what we were looking for and attached a copy of the application in case they hadn't received it. For the week after that, we had no response at all from Heartland. Nothing. No acknowledgement by phone, text, nor email. I didn't expect much, but did expect something. The adoption process is way too complicated. We wanted to adopt a rescue or shelter dog as our last pet was, but it is simply too complicated and frustrating, especially when the place with the animals won't participate. We ended up going with a breeder and have the pup at home now. To be fair, Elkhart Humane Society called a day after we submitted an application to keep on file to say we were accepted. Another agency sent an email saying the pup we were interested in had been adopted that day but they would keep the application. Not so for Heartland. They did eventually send an email . . . 3 days after we had our puppy at home. We've had 2 dogs in our home for decades. We prefer going the rescue/humane society route, but they make it much too hard and frustrating to use. Not sure I'll even try using them next time. I'm glad some folks had a good outcome with them, but for us it was nothing but crickets from Heartland.

After an egregious error and subsequent refusal to correct or admit their mistake, South Bend…read moreAnimal Care and Control gave away the dog ("Mya") upon which I had a pending adoption a mere hours before I was to adopt her. She was given to Heartland Small Animal Rescue. I immediately called Mandy from Heartland (twice). She confirmed that they did have Mya. I told her that I would take Mya THAT DAY. I could meet her or whoever had Mya in less than an hour. She told me that she could not adopt out a dog until I had filled out an application and encouraged me to do so. I immediately did. She promised that she would give me a call on Monday. That call never came. I called Mandy again on Friday, October 10th in the afternoon. She did not return that call either. On Saturday, October 11th, I went to PetSmart in South Bend for the adoption event that Heartland holds weekly. I met Mandy, who informed me that Mya had been adopted just last night. I asked why she never called me. These are the "reasons" she gave: 1. She was waiting to hear from South Bend Animal Control to see if they wanted the dog back. She never heard from them. Why then, I asked, did she allow Mya to be adopted by someone, if she was waiting for animal control? I never received an answer to this. 2. She said that my vet references did not check out, but it clearly said on my application that all of my dog's vaccinations and heartworm preventative are from VIP PetCare clinic. I have receipts of this. 3. She said she had been busy. Interestingly, I had called her and left a message on Friday afternoon. Too busy to call me, but still able to take your call. I appreciate that the volunteers at Heartland are just that--volunteers. Ethically, Mandy should have called me at some point in this process. Instead, it seems that she and South Bend Animal Control were simply going to wait for it to blow over. By the power of sheer incompetence on the part of South Bend Animal Care and Control and of lack of ethics on the part of Heartland, I am unable to adopt the dog that I fell in love with. My heart is broken, and I can only hope that this message will save others from the same pain and frustration. Adopt elsewhere.
