THIEVES. Actual, literal thieves.
They brought the wrong dish out. Not wanting to be "that guy," I decided to try a bite, since who knows? Maybe it will be a nice surprise. It wasn't. I sent it back, and they brought out what I originally ordered. (Also, their menu is very confusing, with multiple items on the same line.)
After the meal (which was... ok), I saw where the dish I sent back was on the bill. When I pointed out that they were charging me for a dish I sent back, they absolutely EXPLODED. The waitress brought the owner or manager over and told her she "saw me eating the dish." Later in our trip, when literal Michoacana cartel members held us up and took our money, they treated us with more respect. That's right - THE MEXICAN CARTELS WILL TREAT YOU BETTER THAN THE STAFF AT BERTICO CAFE.
I didn't have the cash on me two pay for extra dishes, so they sent some thug from the back kitchen with me to guard me while I pulled more money out of an ATM. As in, this restaurant literally put me under guard.
Furthermore, when I paid for the bill (still under guard), they shortchanged me 200 pesos (about $11 USD) and refused to give it back, calling it my "tip." Since I certainly never chose to give these criminals a tip, that 200 pesos is just money they stole from me, and I want it back.
I was warned about lots of things in Mexico, most of which turned out to not be a problem. I just wish I had been warned about Bertico Cafe. read more
