I don't know where the traders get their stock from, but some of them must have an incredible address book! A lot of them seemingly have endless access to the most incredibly desirable objects. Their lives must be heavenly! I considered becoming a trader myself a few years back, but decided that it would be an overtly dangerous career choice. I'd be great at scouting out my stock, and have fairly well tuned haggling skills. So far, so good! But, the problems would arise when it came to selling any of it on. I know I'd want to keep everything! Those confounded attachment issues! They also hold regular auctions at the King's Road site. I've not been to one, but I hear that they are as much fun as the flea markets, and just as well stocked with eminently buyable stuff.

The market is spread out over 3 halls, so make sure you visit them all coz there's there are some great stalls offering all sorts of items. Everyone is really friendly and helpful and if a stall holders is not at their stall you can ask another stall holder and they will do all they can to help you. Parking is good; there are toilets on site and a really nice cafe serving hot and cold drinks and snacks and light meals. It is housed in a very big industrial unit though so there is no heating. (A 1970's vinyl LP going by the name of Tango Time wouldn't be found anywhere near my record collection, I can tell you that!) The quality of stock varies considerably, and to my mind, quite a lot of it would be better suited to a specialist flea market, more than an antiques shop. But in its defense, housing several traders under one roof, and finding a name that fits all, is never going to be an easy balancing act. However, the stock tends to be a little bit pricey, and I feel this is more reflective of the prestigious location and the branding, and has less to do with the actual inherent value of the goods in question. But when all is said and done, it's a great curiosity shop, that makes for pretty interesting, (and often entertaining), browsing. Some things are just so naff that they'll prompt an episode of incredulous giggling. And of course, it is more than possible that you'll find many tasteful genuine articles. If the truth be known, I could actually spend a fair amount of money in here... if I had it! Jumble sales take place regularly, normally on a Saturday morning, and everyone I've seen coming and going is always very good natured, if a little eccentric. The walls are constantly being added to and there are signs up that invite others to add their own artwork.

It looms above the 'al fresco retail arm' of the Magpie collective, and is essentially one of the largest fly pitches you are ever likely to see, taking advantage of a piece of derelict wasteland on the corner of the street, and making it a whole lot prettier. Selling the kind of clobber that you will find at flea markets across the city, or on tat stalls at all of the festivals this summer, this permanent fixture is a welcome addition to the retro shops on Picton Street. Around the corner on Ashley Road, next to the front door of the Magpie building, there's a hand painted sign that reads: "This building is an ongoing and evolving exhibition that you can add to if you wish." Immediately beneath it there's another sign saying, "Enquire within." I love the 'Enquire within" sign that appears to have been added as an afterthought. It seems so incongruous to have such an old fashioned sign accompanying this sub-cultural, progressive and altogether unorthodox establishment. The Magpie is worth a visit. In simply walking through the door you seem to enter another universe entirely. You will find out stuff about Bristol that you never knew existed, and it will change your perspective of this city forever.
