Such a wonderful experience!…read more Although the food and setting was gorgeous, service felt unpretentious and wonderfully paced. The soundtrack for the afternoon was likewise; I think I expected some form of ambient trance and, this is not a joke, "Down in New Orleans" from Disney's "Princess and the Frog" played during our appetizer course (we thought this was hilarious and awesome). With regard to drinks, the seasonal Sorrel Daiquiri was my friend's favorite and the wine selection was very interesting with lots of English and Welsh options. I ordered off of the vegetarian menu and I didn't miss meat for a heartbeat--and, as a bonus, they grow, harvest, and serve a number of vegetables from their own property. It can feel like a financial investment, and it's certainly out of the way, but well worth it.

A very warm welcome awaited us, and we were shown to our room where freshly-baked warm Welshcakes awaited us. I took a leisurely bath and got ready for our tasting menu dinner. The food was phenomenal - having eaten shortly beforehand at Tom Kitchin's in Edinburgh, aspects of this meal were even better. The canapes, the cocktails, the bread, the nice touch of the nettle macaron to send you off to bed - all amazing. The service was really exceptional, really fantastic. They were also happy to accommodate my dietary requirements and substitute dishes, which was great. The only downside to dinner was that the chef patron walked out of the kitchen and straight past us (and then back to kitchen) without greeting any of the diners - seemed a bit odd when he wasn't really that busy and there were only 4 of us. It didn't mar our enjoyment of the meal, but would have been an "icing on the cake" touch. The chap who was in charge of service was really brilliant - his recommendations were spot-on. The dining room is very small, only one other couple were dining at the same time of us - the atmosphere was a little weird as they appeared to have fallen out before dinner! But we had a great time, despite my partner having a terrible cold. We had a great night's sleep in the comfortable bed, and then breakfast next morning was another culinary triumph. I can't wait to go back soon!

What a really cool place.! My husband's business is in the area and I'm so glad they put us in this…read morehotel well I don't know if you call it an estate or Castle somewhere in between. I did the high tea for the first time and it was a little disappointing they didn't come around and refresh our tea and it wasn't it wasn't all I've hoped it would be but oh well. The breakfasts were great by UK standards. The room was fine it was big. As with a lot of places in Europe that didn't have air conditioning and didn't have screens on the windows. We had called ahead and asked for sheets on the beds which we appreciated them doing I enjoyed exploring the grounds and the English Gardens. There were sheep nearby which I enjoyed walking to see. As a part of our room we were told we got an hour in the spa so in the US that means massage facial pedicure that's not what that means there. It meant that you got an hour in there pool jacuzzi area which I thought was very strange. And I figured if they were giving you a time like that that we'd have it all to ourselves not not at all nope nope nope nope. I've never been at a place that had a pool and a jacuzzi and they gave you only an hour that was really weird. But they did have a sauna and steam room also that counted in the meager hour that you were given. Personally I didn't like that policy. There's not a whole lot around that area so anything you go do you're spending quite a bit in transportation. But this is the nicest place in the area. A great place to have an event like a wedding. There's things around the facility that tell the history of the building which is interesting to read about it was a hospital and I think even a prison. But either way it is very well restored my husband's company thought about buying it for their headquarters and I'm glad they didn't because they wouldn't have did it justice. It needed a lot of money to make it gorgeous again.

Another annoyance was that the very expensive menu is printed in small print with poor contrast and the restaurant is dimly lit. It is best not to read the price of wine lest you faint due to the shock. This meant a torch was needed to read it. The swimming pool is excellent. Staff were good, breakfast was excellent.
