I wish I didn't…read morehave to say so and I do write this relunctantly but unfortuntaley, this has been my experience. From day one, the Law School's administration has been a shambles. Information was confusing and chaotic and while you're bombarded with a plethora of emails and updates, including notifications and retractions or corrections of said notifications (can't admin staff just get things right first time round?! and WHY so much unnecessary communication?), getting to the information you actually want and need usually seems long winded. Some staff members really do try their best (and I've had some lovely tutors) but there's this feeling that the college (or at least the Law School) does not run as a well oiled machine, which does not fill me with confidence. Having previously studied at Sussex University, I am not entirely satisfied with the quality of teaching and/or resources at Birkbeck - for one the library could be better. The Mooting program however, is great and perhaps it has encouraged the two stars. Secondly, for the exorbitant tuition fees that are charged, the teaching level doesn't correlate. You spend half the time feeling like the law program is being thrown at you at high speed (which is very overwhelming) and the other half trying not to drown in the pit of chaos. The main building does look a bit dated and some rooms are run down. Saying that however, the new group study area is a plus and is quite relaxed. I have pretty much pulled up my sleeves and rolled with the punches to get through my course because the alternative would be to let these distractions derail me. Birkbeck is not all bad at all however, the bad tends to outshine the good and that much frustration isn't good for anyone's studies. As I work full time, I'm pretty much stuck at Birkbeck but for anyone not tied to studying during in the evening, go elsewhere.

The course held here range from tango to romantic languages and pottery. They have some quite high-tech looking computer labs for design classes and art studios stuffed with supplies. In the grand scheme of things the classes are cheap - from £7.00 a week for ongoing classes that dont require any equipment. Good points: if you enrol as a student for a fiver you get to use the internet and facilities in the library for a year. Bad points: No air-conditioning in summer or heating in winter. sweltering.

The college has many facilities including a large computer room with both PCs and Macs. The Macs have photo shop and final cut pro programmes. There's a cafe upstairs, where you can grab probably the cheapest, quite tasty cappuccino in Camden! The meals in the cafe often consist of a selection of sandwiches (pannis, wraps etc.), jacket potatoes with a choice of toppings (beans, cheese, tuna etc.), chicken and pasta dishes, cous cous and salads. The college offer a wide ranging number of courses at affordable prices e.g. IT, languages, arts, multi media etc.

Alas, BT was giving us what I've now learned is a rather routine shakedown, and it was a couple of weeks before our flat was wireless. Promptly, we found Idea Store Whitechapel. What is an Idea Store, you ask? You must not be from Tower Hamlets. Idea Store is basically a library on uppers, a lending institution augmented by classroom and meeting facilities, wifi throughout, an extensive computer network, and, at Idea Store Whitechapel at least, a wall-of-windows fourth floor café. Our cynical assumption was that it was rebranded thus in order to make library going sexier to the locals. Consequently we sneered at its pro-community attitude assuming more sinister and parochial motives. We soon discovered that there was no need to be hating. If a rebranding is what it takes to create a functional public service combining books, resources and lifelong learning such as this, then so be it. Call it whatever you want. Doris, for instance, or Sunset Beach. Seriously, though, I love libraries. I'm not so big on ownership (you're not likely to see many postings for me about shopping) but I'm very big on books and public resources. The very idea of receiving a volume that has passed through other hands thrills me, as does the handing of it back. The romance of the continuum of ideas is what makes library going important, and what makes the Idea Store's initially cynical-seeming rebranding rather apt: it is a store, or cache, of ideas, affording sharing and interchange, the backbone of any constructive society.

I made some amazing friends here and had myself a good experience on and off but the college started out a little beaten up and not so much of a high flyer. It has undergone some refurbishment in the last few years and I hear it is doing a little better for itself now. They have quite a good security system in place but this would be because a few things have happened there which have caused security to be needed! I wouldn't recommend Croydon College as I feel there are stronger establishments to get an education at.

Language study is rigorous and comprehensive; this is one of the best places in the UK to study Arabic, Chinese or Japanese as well as a range of African languages.
