Neighborhood is beautiful, right next to the river. You are missing out if you don't make this a priority stop when passing by, near, around, or within a hour of Roanoke.

I can't bash this post office too much, but it's just typical of the woes befalling this once…read morerespected and mighty institution. It's a big facility, but the service lobby area is cramped and poorly laid out, and since there's always a line, that's not good. The self service machine is okay and the post office boxes don't look like they have issues. The parking lot is a train wreck. The exit is too close to the light on 419 so cars back up into the parking lot very quickly. If someone just took one minute to think and plan, this probably could have been a decent location, but I don't think there's a lot of strategic planning that goes on at the post office. Also, I wanted to get Christmas stamps but the line was long so I figured I'd get something from the machine. And I received the world's most hideous stamps. That said, the cards will still get mailed.

Located in a beautifully designed red brick modern building at 612 S Jefferson Street in Roanoke,…read moreVirginia, this Social Security office is right next to the Roanoke Public Library (Downtown Roanoke Branch) and in front of the Historic Patrick Henry Apartment Building, Its exterior landscaping is also an example of simple yet beautiful design. A red brick outdoor floor provides the base for an amazing bronze eagle sculpture in the center, surrounded by green areas and iron benches going around it, providing a resting area and an opportunity of enjoying the view. The inside design consists of an elegant entrance with lots of woodworks and simply.but lovely ceiling lamps. Behind a large wooden Security Desk, their are Security Officers who greet you when you arrive and always ask you a battery of questions and explain how to check-in, before they let you in to the offices area of the first floor where most business is done there. This Government office offers a range of programs including retirement, disability, survivor, and supplemental security income benefits. And other services such as issuing replacement Social Security cards. Appointments are recommended but not necessary. Make sure you bring your Social Security number with you if you have one, as well as a government photo ID. When you enter the first floor offices waiting area, you first have to sign in on one of two computer machines where you type the answers to several questions and these machine generate your appointment ticket with a special number code which you have to have to take a seat and wait until it's called together with the window number where you should go to once called over the speaker. All the employees there are very courteous, knowledgeable, efficient, and very helpful. As long as you bring the organized appropriate documentation, you will be able to finish in a reasonable time period.

You sit on the hill opposite the star and once the sun goes behind the tall trees, make your way over to the other side and see all of the city light up before you. Granted, it is a small place, but you get a whole view below you. The star is the biggest manmade star so take that as you will. It was nice that you could drive directly up to the parking lot and there were paved sidewalks so anyone could make the walk right up to the star. The parking lot is rather small so be prepared to either wait or have to go back down a little bit to find a place. We were there on a beautiful fall night so it seemed like the entire city was there. People were patient as you took pictures though so there was no trouble at all. Just a little crowded on the observation deck so be prepared.

I wanted to register to vote for the first time in the upcoming November election and I quickly…read morerealized I should have not tried to do it in person. I made the mistake of asking one "dumb" question. It's the first time I'm registering or voting so I didn't know and assumed the Registrar was there to answer questions if needed! The Registrar was so hateful that I didn't even get registered and just left frustrated with a halfway filled in form. The assistant Registrar was trying to be helpful but I felt bad because even she wasn't above the wrath of the Registrar. I'm not sure how this woman got a job dealing with the public but the city would be better off with someone nicer and until they hire someone nicer, you'd be better off just registering to vote on the internet or at the DMV when you get a new license.

I don't agree with any kind of negative review of South County Library. To the "avid reader in…read moreparticular; no public libraries ime (including more than a few in the DC Metro areas) stock significant numbers of new books....the flow of the most current titles is often affected by demand both within and without the public library space in general. The staff here are generally very helpful. The reference staff are resourceful and have assisted me plenty in aquiring obscure titles via intra-library loans, and call me promptly by phone when an ordered title is received. The place is always clean and neat looking both inside and out. The building design and layout is uniquely attractive and the floorplan is spacious and efficient; the views of the surrounding areas are calming. There's a very nice quiet room upstairs, with a faux fireplace and comfortable seating. The book-drop slots and window-service drive-through are convenient. I've been to more than a few libraries. South County can hold its own with any public library anywhere. Of course that's my opinion, so check it out in-person and see for yourself.
