    Vegetarian omelette with hash-browns
    Payton H.

Bette's Place is a charming, old-school breakfast joint. I came in at 9am on a Sunday and it was already almost full. I would recommend coming in as early as you can to snag a table. The service was welcoming and very attentive. I got the vegetarian omelette with hash browns and a pancake. It was quite a large portion, especially with the full sized pancake as a side. The omelette was stuffed full of nicely cooked veggies and a significant portion of fresh avocado. The hash browns were perfectly crispy. The pancake was pillowy, buttery, and soaked up the provided warm maple syrup in the most amazing way. I had a couple bites croissant breakfast sandwich, which was also delicious and flavorful.

Large and in charge cinnamon bun! You might have to put sweat pants on after eating it!

Excellent service and delicious breakfast! The cinnamon bun was delicious and massive! I would definitely return there for breakfast if in Hood River!

Inside seating, lots more on the other side!

Visiting Hood River for the first time and decided breakfast all day was my option. Bette's place was close to the water and had good menu options. The meal was hearty but overall the flavor was bland. The country jack skillet was heavy (which I expected) but there was little seasoning throughout the dish. The veggie omelette was fresh and light but also lacked seasoning. The herb garlic on the potatoes provided a hint of taste without the salt. Staff was friendly and service was quick.

This is one of the rare times I am writing about an American diner experience. Usually one would associate them with dry flavorless fare. That is until I had visited this place. Truly a quaint place with wholesome and delicious food options. I think I may have been deceived by the convenient, commercialized options. We'll now I know. I think when people say American breakfast - it should have well seasoned omelette options - fried, Benedict, omelette or may be just scrambled. Also included with side of fruits , hash browns or just potatoes. The omelettes to have different filling - isn't that capital! Bette's had all this where I could savor the unhurried hospitality and chefs skill both at same time. Quality first! You. An tell that the establishment care about the quality of food they serve. Service that immediately puts you at ease. Is this a five star rated place? No. Is this a Michelin star rated place? No. The reason I am speaking so much about this is because this is the base minimum of a restaurant. I feel that in the race of capitalism and the fast pace of life folks have forgotten what it is to be able to eat out and enjoy. What to expect from hospitality. If I could give 5 star ratings for the service and the professionalism to this establishment I would give it 10 times over. If this becomes the role model of American food experience, may be we hope to see more gastronomic choose to explore American fare. I am glad I chose to drive 5 mins to come and eat at a local breakfast place. We ordered 2 omeleetes, lemon French toast and a chorizo burrito. Normal stuff done great and with a lot of care. Taste on point. The only thing which took away from taste was the hash browns and the potatoes. Dry. Lemon French toast with mascarpone was a dream. Also everything that came out was fresh, the fruit was ripe as expected due to the local supply. The place had ample seating and was clean. There are a couple of dishes I would like to still try from their menu - the crab Benedict omelette, waffles, pies. Next time. If you are visiting Hood river I highly recommend you to go try this place. If nothing else it will help clear the dry, unappetizing opinion you might have of American food.

    salmon and brie scramble

I stayed in Hood River for a family event this spring, and since our hotel didn't offer a free breakfast, I'd been scoping out potential places to go eat. Bette's was at the top of the list, and I'm so glad we ended up going. The smoked salmon and brie scramble had caught my eye on the online menu, and it was absolutely DELICIOUS. It wasn't too fishy, especially paired with the hashbrowns I got with it. The portion was massive, and I had plenty of leftovers to take home. It was almost better reheated, since the brie was able to melt a little more. Service was fast too, maybe because we were there after the main morning rush. I'm gonna have to go back sometime because there were at least 5 other things on the menu that also sounded amazing and I want to try them all!

This place is awesome. And though it looks small from the street there is more seating in back and in the hallway. The waitress was so nice and I LOVE they bring the food out as it is ready so that everyone's is fresh. Also love I got the @1 whivh is breakfast for lunch AND I got the Gluten-free biscuits with it, there were 2 huge biscuits. And they were so yummy, a touch if cinnamon. We would totally come back.

We had a great breakfast at Bette's Place. Upon arriving, we were able to seat ourselves. Service was quick with us being offered drinks almost immediately. Once we were ready, our order was taken quickly. While we waited for food, we were offered a cinnamon roll. The cinnamon roll was huge and large enough for our three person party to share. The menu had tons of options. It was so difficult to choose because so much of it looked good. The food was delicious, portion sizes large, and the service was good. Prices are good in relation to the amount of food you get. I would visit again!

I read about this place in a oregon visitor's guide and it mentioned their plate-size cinnamon rolls but I didn't actually look it up beforehand so I pictured big but not GIGANTIC. My mouth literally dropped when they brought it out. This is one to share and only $6. The potions for their breakfasts were also big. And everything was delicious too. Wish I could teleport these cinnamon rolls back home. Service was also friendly and fast. Casual, comfort ambiance, great for breakfast in Hood River.

i was kinda nervous when i walked in and saw the "self seating" sign as my usual experience is never getting served. however, the staff was super welcoming and the service was quick from ordering and receiving food! it was lovely of the staff to check in with us during our dining experience and was on top of it with the to go boxes! the dining setting was interesting! in the building, there was a suite designated to the restaurant and other suites for other businesses. there was dining within the restaurant and outside of the restaurant (but still in the building). i ordered the cinnamon french toast with scrambled eggs and ham. maple syrup and berry syrup was also provided - love the different options for syrups! i also got to try the eggs benedict with salmon and thats something im definitely ordering next time im here! 4/5 stars due to the cleanliness of the dining area, there were a few bugs/insects flying around during our meal

    South of the Gorge burger.

Great Diner. I had a South of the Gorge burger and my Mom and girlfriend had South of the Gorge salads. Really large salads and you will need to take some home in a box. Friendly and attentive servers. Laid back environment. Note: open only for breakfast and lunch until 2 pm. Good news is they serve the full menu all day, and the menu is large. They also have amazing homemade cinnamon rolls and huge maple bars (we took two to go) Love this place.

    Country skillet

We stopped in for breakfast today. I got the country skillet which was great. My wife had the eggs Benedict which was good. Our server Gabby was so sweet and funny that made the meal fun . The restaurant is cafe style. All in all a good meal.

More yumminess Note: one of these shows it is a 1/2 order and was more than plenty!

I'm so used to fish and chips being made with cod or other white fish, so this was a fun change. Despite being a pub, this place is family-friendly. Service was prompt, and the restaurant atmosphere is very pleasant. It's kind of funny because you'll have people in suits having a business meeting over dinner, and other regular hotel guests just dining casually in t-shirts and jeans. On both occasions, I was dining with another family member. When we were there for dinner, we were having a really hard time deciding what to order, and our server let us know that there was a 2-for deal going on for some of the pastas. Each of us had been considering a pasta, so that solved that problem! Both were delicious, and we had leftovers to take home. When we were there for breakfast, I was feeling adventurous and ordered the lox and bagel, which I've only had a very basic version of one other time. It was soooo good, and very filling. Several other options on the breakfast menu also sounded really good, but I'm glad I went with this for the experience. I'd definitely eat here again if/when I stay in the hotel again. Definitely the standout of the table for me. Service was friendly and expedient, which I always appreciate in the morning when everyone is trying to get caffeinated and out the door. My companions ordered the protein bowl, which was a hearty mix of grains and grilled vegetables with your choice of tofu or egg. It leaned a little bland flavor-wise, but it did exactly what it needed to do: provided a filling, healthy base for a full day of activity in Hood River. Not every dish was a knockout, but overall it was a very solid breakfast spot with fair pricing at about $18 per dish.

Everyone else is already finishing up their drinks and meals. Wanting just one drink after a long day, I head to the bar! My wife asks me to get her one too. Here's where it gets bizarre. Kickstand has a bar...well, it looks like a bar. But what I found out is that it's just for looks because it doesn't act like a bar. I thought ordering two cocktails and paying for my drinks would be easy, like it is at every bar in town. But the bartender, I mean employee standing behind a bar, asked if I was with the large group. I stated, "yes, I was." Then she proceeded to tell me that the drinks would be on someone's tab. But I showed up late...I don't know what's happening. I don't know who's paying for the "tab". I just wanted to buy two drinks and walk away. But that wasn't allowed at Kickstand. Then another employee walks up and attempts to take my drink order. Super confused, I tell her the employee standing behind the bar just took my drink order. And then we proceeded down the tab conversation again. The second employee said because "we" were a party of 8 or more, I couldn't pay for my own drinks and I they would have to put it on the party's tab. But again, I don't know who owns the tab. If it was the woman having the birthday, I didn't want to add to her bill...on her birthday. Then they suggested I "could just Venmo" the party girl. No! I want to just order two drinks and have Kickstand take my money. Why wouldn't they just take my money?! The place was dead tonight, other than the 5 or so small daycarel families, sitting at their own tables, that made up the "party". I canceled my drink order and walked away out of protest and principal. When asked if I was with the big party, I should have said no I guess. Lesson leaned for next time, if there is a next time. Kickstand, you're so difficult and frustrating!!

The atmosphere is casual and inviting but the food, both quality and presentation, steals the show. We tried a gin cocktail that was as beautiful as it was inventive. We followed this with the brussel sprouts salad which was lightly roasted but still tasted and looked green in the most delightful way, with some kind of light dressing that celebrates the vegetables in the salad medley without overpowering them. We took Calvin's recommendation and ordered the special which was a three mushroom fettuccine: it was perfection. The pasta was served al dente, the mushrooms included shitake, hedgehog, and one other and all had a unique flavor that stood out with each bite. The pasta sauce was buttery but somehow almost effervescent, embracing but not suffocating, with just enough cheese to know it's there but not enough to have it overpower the dish. At this point we didn't think the meal could get any better but then we ordered the pear, huckleberry, and pluot sorbet made at Celilo and we're now committed to coming back. The sorbet featured locally sourced Bosc pears and that flavor may have been my favorite as it was unlike any other sorbet I have ever tasted. All were sweet but complex. The service was fantastic and our waitress was super friendly. We discovered that she has ties to KC so I always love that. I started with an Adeline blackberry sour. It's pretty to look at and so delicious to drink. Sours in Oregon are hands down the best. I wish we had more of it in KC but I highly recommend that you get sours and ciders if you're in the PNW. For lunch I ordered the Club Sandwich: Sweetheart ham, hickory-smoked turkey, Tillamook white cheddar, Applewood smoked bacon; topped with lettuce, tomato, chipotle mayo. It normally comes on sourdough but I swapped it out for ciabatta. First off, it's a HUGE club sandwich. Lots of meat that had amazing flavor. Not some sad deli sandwich at all. The ciabatta had great chew and complemented the sandwich perfectly. No complaints here! Did I eat it all? Yes, and that was a great plan because it kept me going for the next 24 hours that ended up being a cluster that resulted in no food being available. Sandwiches come with chips or a garden salad but I opted for a different side with an up charge. Let's talk about the Oregon Blue Salad: spring mix, dried cranberries, honeycrisp apples, Rogue Creamery Oregon Blue crumbles, and maple candied walnuts; tossed in an apple cider vinaigrette. So GOOD! You can get it by itself and it would make a great meal. Everything was so fresh. Again, not a single complaint. If you are ever in the area, please stop in.
