The hand written signs and abundance of synthetic grass give the shop a kind of 80's feel. The vacuum packed beetroot adds to this vibe, and makes me long for Saturday afternoons with salad in front of the TV watching the A-Team. The prices here are about half what you'd pay in a supermarket and the range is good. As well as lots of fresh produce they have some temptations in the form of soft 'eating licorice' (is there any other kind, I wonder?), and crisps near the counter, along with factory mis-shapes from a big local chocolate maker. I leave with a super sweet juicy pineapple for £1 and two punnets of strawberries for the same price.

I bought a small one as it was only a meal for 3. Joe told me how to cook and serve it and gave me information on what it is best served with. One of the best in the Midlands.

I've been attending the market for over three years now, and I rarely miss a month. The stalls always draw me back when I'm needing a healthy variation to my diet, and the price range is perfect value for money. Specifically regarding the Beans & Leaves stall, which sells a wide range of both coffee beans and loose teas. Most of these infusions rarely reach the £4 mark for 100g, which results in more than enough tea for two for several months! The tea stall holder himself is a bubbly yam yam who'll immediately strike up a conversation. It's just a shame that his stall is on the windiest part of Moseley, meaning that a lot of his tea ends up at the other side of the market! But of course, on first visit, you'll want to sample everything. Whether this be jam, ostrich burgers, bakery, alcohol or cheese (in fact, I highly recommend the Warwickshire Truckle), there's literally something for everyone. I've also tried a range of unlikely produces which sometimes appear at the market, such as a piece of fruit called a quince, and a green tea cake, both equally as delicious as the other. As a worthy winner of "best farmers market in the UK 2012", Moseley Farmers Market is a treasury to Birmingham and brings a tasteful locality to the streets of Moseley.

And I wasn't disappointed. The market is exactly what you would want a medium to large sized market to be. Offering a huge range of locally sourced goods sold to you by the actual producers of the items, you can get most things you would need to stock up the fridge, freezer and cupboards (with a good amount of locally made crafty things too). It's in a pretty setting and has a lovely community feel to it. We managed to find parking in the small shopping area just up from St Mary's Row at around 9:15am, but parking could be a bit of a nightmare if you were getting here later. The square area offered braces of pheasants for £6, cheese, wine, condiments and artisan food products and the High Street area (which we hadn't realised was there until we were leaving - D'oh) offers more of a crafty element. We had a nice little poke around the stalls and chatted to many of the business owners about their products and they were more than happy to talk to us and advise where the items are made and the ingrediants that go into them. We got some lovely locally made fizzy red wine (Did you know there are vineyards in the Midlands?) for £10 a bottle, some hot sauce from Pip's and was very tempted by cakes and unusual scotch eggs... We are definitely planning to go back. If you haven't been, you must go. Get there early if you're planning to drive but the buses down to Moseley drop you off right in the thick of the action, do that might be the best idea.

It was a good place to pick up stuff for the following morning, such as milk and bread. Unfortunately it is not an off-licence, but otherwise you can get pretty much anything you need from here. I'm also a fan of cooking and this was, and is, a great place to pick up fresh vegetables, and in particular greens of a more exotic variety. Never underestimate the beauty of being able to get fresh and tasty corriander at all hours of the day and night!

At Buywise you are saved the bother with full roaming privileges. There's nothing like a 24 hr convenience store to add a little New York style chic to your local high street and Buywise Express caters for those little late night cravings. Inside you'll find the usual array of canned goods, milk and bread, soft drinks and cigarettes. Out front it's fresh fruit and vegetables. I usually reach for a coconut and pineapple drink out of the fridge and some nuts of the front rack and look out for my favourite attendee with the big moustache I refer to as Sarge. Buywise now have competition from down the street, but my loyalties are with the first 24hr convenience store and my friend Sarge.

It's a large shop with plenty of space inside, the produce is kept on wide clean shelves and always looks fresh and attractive. Baskets and bags are plentiful and it's up to you to help yourself to what you need, there is a set of hanging scales in the shop for you to check the approximate weight of your purchase so it's easy to keep track of your bill. The fruit is laid out on one side of the shop and the veg is on the other side, separating these two sections are a few shelves of tinned items and other groceries. The main onus is, however, on the fruit and veg. There are a good selection of apple and pear varieties, the Granny Smith apples are deliciously crisp and flavoursome from here. There are fresh, ripe bananas in here and they are lovely and much cheaper than those in Asda up the road. You can buy a whole melon, or half a one wrapped in clingfilm. I like that the halves are half the price of a full melon, because another grocer I use cheekily charges almost as much for the half melon! These are extremely fresh and juicy, I love the watermelon slices although should really buy a full one as I am always up and down to this grocer for more and more melon! You can also buy grapes, strawberries, kiwi fruits, nectarines, clementines etc because this grocer stocks produce that is in season he manages to keep the prices down. The veg are equally good, the baking potatoes are excellent and always come out fluffy and delicious after cooking. The baby new potatoes are lovely too, especially with a knob of butter melted over them. I make my own vegetable soup so buy a lot of leeks, carrots, onions and tomatoes from here and have never had bad vegetable. The leeks in particular are great and always seem cleaner with less grit than I find in other local grocers. There are also parsnips, swede, salad veggies (or are they fruit???), beetroots and loads more to choose from - the only thing I wish they would stock that they don't are butternut squash because I always have to go to Asda for these! You can also buy flowers from this grocer, bunches from £2.99 up to more elaborate displays priced at up to £10. They also sell some beautiful house plants which are reasonably priced and very healthy, I have bought several plants from here which are still going strong a few years later. Staff are really nice and friendly, it's not the sort of shop where you are going to have a chat with the staff but they are helpful and cheerful as they are serving. If I can't find something in the shop, which is rare as the shop is so straightforward, I don't hesitate to ask and the staff know straight away what I'm talking about and can advise me on if they stock it and where it is.
