This is a solid spot for those on a plant-based diet. This used to be just a takeout place but it has evolved into a decent sit-down option for a work lunch with an elevated casual vibe. My favorites are the mighty mushroom and spicy mango rolls. Both are vegan, come packed tightly with veggies and rice, and come topped with a yummy aioli. Two rolls is enough to fill me up when I'm ravenous. I'm a fan of the lunch specials. Their vegetarian bao are quite spicy - not for the faint hearted - but they're really good. I also like their Thai curry soup a lot - not super hearty but still tastes great. The service is pretty good - fast for a sit-down, but still attentive and friendly. To drink, they have a good variety of healthy juices and tea options. Note that this place is a bit on the pricey side. I ordered pick-up here for my first meal in NYC as I arrived into the city a little late and was tired from flying. The restaurant is fully vegan/plant-based. I was excited to try it as they obviously had more than avocado and cucumber rolls on the menu (I love avocado and cucumber rolls don't get me wrong). I ordered the chick'n baos, the shiitake mushroom dumplings, and the salmon roll. All of the items were absolutely delicious. I don't know what the salmon in the roll was made of, but the texture mimicked real salmon well from what I remember. My order pick-up was pretty seamless. Starving and freezing on the way from Central Park to MoMA and decided to grab a quick takeout from Beyond Sushi. They didn't offer their Banh Mi sandwich at this location when we visited, so we instead opted for the spicy chicken Bao. The dish was fire!!! The Baos were pillowy and soft (almost too soft to handle - they fell apart in minutes) and the chicken was warm, crisp on the outside and the sauce was spicy but not overwhelming (we stayed clear of the whole red peppers). As a non-vegan, I really enjoy trying vegan sushi and seeing how vegan restaurants get better and better at perfecting sushi rolls and finding innovative ways to use vegetables. This place does everything well from their dumplings to maki rolls to specialty nigiri. I recommend trying them out. The interior is very clean, green, and refreshing. The service was super nice. They're informative and gave a lot of great suggestions. Ginger Beef Dumplings - I couldn't tell it was not beef. It was super flavorful with the spicy chili sauce and the soy sauce. Definitely don't be shy about the soy sauce. Eggplant Unagi - if you enjoy refreshing yuzu flavors, this is for you. I could hardly tell this was eggplant, they truly transformed the eggplant into a solid chewy texture. Three is not enough pieces. Mighty Mushroom Roll - this is my least favorite of the three plates I tried, but I still thought it was very good. I personally would share this rather than eating the whole roll by myself. ANYWAY , we got there and was seated all the way in the back when there was a 4 seater with no one at it and that was annoying . Then we sat down got our food , the cups were not cleaned properly so I asked for new chopsticks that just was sitting there . We got our food the miso soup not good And it was $8 which is so steep for miso soup which is only white miso water tofu and seaweed or whatever . It tasted like warm sesame oil . As a sushi lover there was a very high bar for this vegan sushi spot. I can safely say they met the bar. The flavor was good and the textures were great! We also really loved the appearance of the food. The service was insanely fast, granted the restaurant was mostly empty. The appetizer came out in less than 10 minutes and the entree came out in 15! Came back twice in one week for the first time in over three years (i.e. since the pandemic), because some friends and I wanted a vegan spot to eat at before or after a show nearby at NY City Center. I was pleasantly surprised at how much the menu has expanded since then. There are so many more sushi-type rolls, all with unique combinations and ingredients, and they were all so good. I was so happy to have a Philadelphia roll again, which I haven't been able to have since going vegan, so this was quite the treat. And it tasted delicious! The Charred Avocado was also lovely and had a nice slight kick to it. But my favorite of the newer rolls I've tried is the Ube Crunch, one of their special rolls. Such a great combination of flavors and textures. My only minor issue is that most of the rolls don't have much protein in them. Despite having two rolls each time I came recently, I ended up feeling hungry not too long after. The "zalmon" and "tuna" are concoctions made from tapioca and other starches (I asked), so while they may look like their fishy counterparts, they don't have anywhere near the same nutritional value ... and are probably highly processed foods anyway. I noticed some of the other non-sushi items (like the dumplings and many of the shared plate dishes) are more prominent in protein, but most of those I can't have because they have too much gluten. So while the sushi rolls are fun to eat and are delicious, they're not as filling. Regardless, my non-vegan friends who came with me were happy with the food they had here, so that's a huge endorsement there. read more

We went to Beyond Sushi a few weeks ago while visiting NYC, and I'm still thinking about the dumplings! It was a short walk from our hotel, which made getting there during a light rain easy. Service was great but not overwhelming. The space was cozy, dimly lit.. enough where you could still read the menu. We ordered the Ginger "Beef" dumplings, the Chick'n Yakitori Skewers, the Spicy Mang Roll, and "Salmon" Avocado. Not pictured here are the skewers because we devoured them as soon as they hit the table. All of the food we ordered tasted amazing and left our appetite satisfied. Wine and beer were good, too. It's rare to find a place that serves vegan sushi. It's rarer to find one with GOOD vegan sushi. This happens to be one of those top-tier places. I can see myself going here regularly and trying different things on their large menu but also having several dishes I will thoroughly enjoy again and again. My sister and I got the "beef" dumplings ($9), the Zalmon tartare ($17), Spicy mango roll ($9), and ube crunch roll ($14). We also got the ube cheesecake ($12) for dessert. We finished everything but were quite full at the end. Everything was so tasty; the sauces and ingredients all complemented each other well, so that each bite had a variety of textures and delicious flavor. The mango roll and tartare were my personal favorites but my sister also enjoyed the ube crunch roll. We had a waiter who seemed new and forgot to bring us water for awhile and spilled some water on our napkin. He didn't check on us at all, but another waiter did. Now we are "Beyond Sushi". You go tell Jiro that, will ya? Well, I saw the 14th Street location a few years ago and bookmarked it as a vegan option only to discover recently there are multiple Beyond Sushi's now. I'm a Left Coast tourist. What do I know? As proof, Jamie W. and I had a busy morning taking the Staten Island Ferry, posing with the Fearless Girl near Wall Street, walking the Brooklyn Bridge, and browsing the Brooklyn Flea. We was hungry by the time we popped out of the subway en route to Central Park. I noticed they have their smallest location on 56th near 6th, just thirty seats but luckily room enough for us. We started with the $9 Five-Spice Chick'n Dumplings, which were absolutely delicious. The faux-poultry mixed with Napa cabbage, ginger, scallions, cilantro, chili panko, and of course, five-spice. The $9 Mighty Mushroom is one of their signature rolls and full of umami with shiitake and enoki mushrooms, tofu, and shiitake truffle sauce encased in black rice. Amazing meal! Don't let the ingredients in the nutty butty roll scare you: it was peanut buttery goodness. The jackfruit roll was so creamy and tasty. My friend loved her ramen. The food was definitely not as good as I was hoping. I was in NYC from LA for 1 night so I ordered Five Spice Chick'n Dumplings & Spicy Jackfruit Crab Roll to go. The chick'n in the dumpling was dry and tough and the Jackfruit roll was just okay. The flavors for both of the items were just bland and the textures seemed weird and almost "jerky". I don't know if I just caught them on a bad night, but unfortunately the food just left so much to be desired. The restaurant itself was small, galley style but very clean and somewhat romantic. Very cute for a date night or small get together with friends. Saved this restaurant in 2019 to try the next time I am in NY for vacation. Took me 4 years to get back to NY. They're still open! Food: recommend the smoky dragon to try something different, lovely smokiness. Jackfruit crab is lovely, cant tell its from a plant, bit still has the rich mayo associated with spicy crab rolls. The two minor issues I had was The dumplings were pretty difficult to eat with chopsticks and kept falling apart during each bite and the sushi could have used a bit more spice. A vegan sushi place - cool concept! Pro tip: go for their lunch special - only $14 for so much food!! My friend and I popped in for a lighter lunch and we're not disappointed. It definitely is a lot of food but we didn't feel heavy afterwards. The Spicy Mang Roll was super fresh and light. The Sweet Tree Roll was killer - I've never had sweet potato in a roll before but it's so soft and balanced out the chewy rice. The Truffle Shiitake Mushroom Dumplings was delicious! One of my all time favorite restaurants. Everything I've ever had from here was delicious. My absolute favorite thing was the mushroom sushi roll (not pictured). It had amazing textures and flavors. The jackfruit crab roll was incredible. The spicy Mayo truly does not taste vegan. The chicken bao was so soft and delicious. The impossible meat dumplings were delicious and came with good sauce.
