When I was visiting NYC a few weeks ago, I made sure I would have one meal at one of the City Roots restaurants. Beyond Sushi was in Midtown near where I was staying, so I ended up coming here---on Valentine's Day, which happened to be a mistake! Since I didn't have a reservation, the lady who checked me in told me I had to find a seat at the bar. Her attitude was not the best, as when I looked over the menu and made a decision on what I wanted to get, she dismissed me when I waved her over, saying she is not the person taking orders. Um, okay? Then who is? One guy at the bar was nicer, and was able to take my order. I started off with a hot tea since NYC was cold in February, and then decided to have as much as I could of two dishes---the "chicken" yakitori skewers and the Korean BBQ skillet. The skewers came in a set of two, with a white mayo-like sauce drizzle and pickled cucumber on the side. Super delectable, though very filling because of the protein! The skillet was made with classic Chunk Foods protein, the go-to plant-based option for all the meat dishes at City Roots restaurants as far as I know. This was incredibly filling, but the sauce and the texture were all around delicious as well. I could NOT bother to finish the brussels sprouts the skillet came with---way too much to stomach, and I was going to focus on the "meats" since I can always have brussels any other time! The bill by the end of it was PRICEY. That's why I only go to one of these restaurants as a special treat when I visit NYC. Watch out if you order hot tea...$13!! We love Beyond Sushi! The interior of this location is beautiful - I wish they had outdoor seating for warmer weather as I don't eat indoors because of covid risk, but the air quality here in here was surprisingly good. As a non-vegan, I was really curious going in. We ordered five different rolls and the rainbow roll was my favorite, especially with the pickled veggies inside. The avocado "crab" roll was also really good. For sides, we got the crab rangoons, spicy eggplant, and grilled chicken bao buns. My personal favorites were the grilled chicken bao and the eggplant - both were packed with flavor. I didn't update my review recently, but last year I took a group of friends here. I had to email the manager because we had a large group. We had two tables out together in the center of the restaurant and everything was excellent. I really enjoyed their Nutty Buddy Wrap. I was with many non-vegans and everyone was pleased with the food and evening in general. I came back this past Saturday with another group of friends. We had reservations at another restaurant and some of them didn't want to eat there. One suggested Beyond Sushi, so I called and they were able to fit us in, but we had to be seated at two separate tables. I got the Nutty Buddy Wrap again as well as the Sweet Tree Roll. One person got the Spicy Ramen and said it had just the right amount of spice. One got the Sesame Miso Ramen and she loved all the mushrooms in the dish. This was a fantastic find... we were at The Morgan Library and searched for vegan options for lunch. So we walked in... and were pleasantly surprised by the decor ands atmosphere. Very nice. I think it would be a lovely dinner setting too. Anyway, we were in a rush so ordered fairly quickly... the food was amazing. Highly highly recommend the rainbow roll!!! Richard has the Tokyo IPA and found it to be very good. It wasn't super hoppy or super sweet. I ordered the sake flight. Service was great. Servers are personable and friendly. The food wasn't bad. We ordered the Sweet Tree Roll, Oshizushi Spicy Salmon, Charred Avocado Roll, and Pork Skewer. My favorite was the Sweet Tree Roll and then Charred Avocado. The flavors of both were balanced and not too salty or strong. The pork skewer wasn't bad, and I really liked the mushroom medley on its side. It had a bit of a tangy vinegary taste, but it was good. The pork skewer itself was like a dumpling filling. My least favorite was the Oshizushi Spicy Salmon pressed sushi pieces. It was a bit too sour for my liking. The rice for the all sushi rolls I've had from Beyond Sushi doesn't taste fresh (tastes like it's just been in the fridge for many days -- hardened, dry), but it's most apparent in the Oshizushi Spicy Salmon pieces because there is more rice. I always felt like the rice quality could be better. I've been to their other location, and overall really like the creativity of their rolls and how they are completely plant-based. Not everything is a hit for me, and the food is a bit on the pricy side for what it is, but they have enough dishes I like (e.g. Sweet Tree Roll, Mighty Mushroom Roll) for me to want to come back whenever I'm in the mood. Overall the atmosphere and service made this dining experience very pleasant. My boyfriend and I came here for date night. My criteria for vegan food is how well they emulate their meat cousin. Wow, what an incredible meal! Came here for a date night and enjoyed every bite! Everything is vegan, which is so impressive. Our server mentioned that they recently changed their menu to have more non sushi options, and so we tried a few things: the chicken bao, the spicy mang sushi, and the miso ramen. We were blown away by all three dishes, especially the ramen where they somehow created a vegan egg that had very realistic consistency. I was taken to Beyond Sushi by my friend who is a vegetarian and pescatarian. I eat everything and had never experienced vegetarian sushi. I was pleasantly surprised; though, true sushi connoisseurs will find subtle reminders this is not authentic sushi. Given my surprise and how well things were executed here, this is an outstanding effort and should a person go the vegetarian route and decide upon no fish as well, Beyond Sushi is a great place to find in Midtown. The atmosphere is pleasing and not too loud, more of a muted undertone and a calming aesthetic. The lighting is a bit muted as well, but not too dark. You can read the menu easily here. Some places I note have gone so dark, reading the menu can be a challenge. Service is great too here. Our server was knowledgeable about the menu and our first order came out fairly quickly. Let me get the weakest of the items out of the way first. The Miso Glazed Pork Skewer from the Chef's Choice section of the menu was in our first order and did not hit my palate the way it is described. This glazed shiitake, oyster and wood ear mushroom with scallions, togarashi and spices sounded better than it delivered. This was not offensive to my palate, but the texture was not there for me and the flavor fell flat. The first order also included the Oshizushi Spicy Salmon special roll and it is special. Here the torched spicy salmon was treated to some spices and sauces that did not detract from the texture of that salmon. The texture and flavors of the spices and sauces came together exceedingly well. If you're a pescatarian, this is one I would say is a must be ordered. I would be confident in ordering the Rainbow special roll with tuna, salmon, well chosen veggies and some interesting spices and sauces to boot. The Spicy Tuna Roll from the Classics menu was a good roll, but slightly below the previous roll. The texture of the tuna was good as was the flavor. I was told by my friend the items on the menu are all made from non fish. This has me a bit confused and I am surprised how authentic the two rolls tasted. The owner or manager of Beyond Sushi is more than welcome to comment, for I am quite impressed by such effort. 3.6 stars! read more

We ordered the Sweet tree and spicy mang rolls and admittedly they did taste kind of similar. We enjoyed them both. I absolutely loved the corn. I've never had a wonton with the "cream cheese" not in the wonton but on the side, while the presentation was impressive, the textures weren't there for me. This restaurant exceeded all of my expectations! I meant to come in for lunch, but had a change of plans and met up with a friend in the city for dinner. She's not vegan, but she was amazed by how delicious the food was as well! When we walked in we were seated right away by McAlister, who was attentive, friendly, and continued to provide excellent service. We started off with cocktails, and I ordered the Murasaki which has ube in it. It's a dessert cocktail, so it could also be enjoyed at the end of a meal. I feel the Orange added made the drink taste a little off, but it was interesting. The food was incredible, their nightly special included a Korean bbq brisket roll, which was wrapped in shiso and seaweed. Sure it's been 10 years since I've eaten meat, but if you were to tell me that was the real thing, I would 100% believe it. The brisket was tender and had a great texture, not to mention the sauce was so flavorful. We shared the Oshizushi Spicy Salmon roll and I ordered the Sesame Miso Ramen for myself. Loved the creamy broth, and that boiled "egg" was perfectly done. We were so full from dinner, but somehow had room for the Pandan Mousse Cake after peaking at the dessert menu. Wow, really loved the combination of flavors and how the dessert melted in my mouth. The yuzu gel really created a nice balance with the coconut mousse. Food The crab rangoon might have been the best thing we ate during our NYC trip. Being vegan, there are a few things you miss and finding a really well-made crab rangoon is one of them. They had the sweet and chili sauce and the rangoons were perfectly crispy with a nice filling ratio. The coconut spread they gave you was so good and really helped the crispy parts of the rangoons. I must know what they put in it so I can use it in future recipies. We also got their avocado roll and the spicy tuna and both were above average. The rice just felt a little off for both of us, but otherwise the other parts of the sushi was unmatched. They even torched the avocado on the outer part of the roll. Service The staff warned us a few times that they were fully vegan and mentioned how some diners were turned away by this. I appreciated the transparency and also the concern with allergies. They were helpful, super attentive, and I did not need to ask for anything. If we did not need to catch a train we would have stayed longer and tried their ube cheesecake. I know they have a few other restaurants and will need to come back to try them in the future. Ambiance Came at night so think good for a date night or casual dinner. You do not need reservations or to be totally dressed up. They even let us charge in the corner and did not rush us at all. I was in NYC for a quick business trip and stopped in for lunch on my last day. I ordered Five Spice Dumplings, Mighty Mushroom Roll and Philadelphia roll. The dumplings were delicious - savory and sweet spices. I enjoyed the Philly roll since it's been a while since I had one since going vegan. I love the cream cheese and "salmon". The Mighty Mushroom was good if you are a fan of mushrooms and tofu which I am. In addition I got the Ube Cheesecake to-go to eat at the airport. I've visited Beyond Sushi twice this fall and have been wowed each time. They have an incredible weekday lunch special that's gourmet and affordable. Don't miss the five spice chicken or ginger beef dumplings, both are spectacular! For the choose two lunch, I paired an order of dumplings with the spicy tuna roll. Beautiful and delicious. On my most recent visit in Nov, I tried the pandan mousse cake for dessert. It was gorgeous but I wish it tasted as impressive as it looked. Once I read the menu, I understood why -- they are an entirely vegan restaurant, I'm sure many folks aren't willing to entertain that option. Even knowing full well what I signed up for, I wasn't particularly blown away by my lunch here. The chili noodle dish wasn't particularly spicy, and portions were small. Even with lunch special pricing, this wasn't the most cost-friendly option in the area. Dinner pricing seemed a bit high for a relatively ordinary menu. I had a deeply unpleasant and concerning experience at Beyond Sushi. While eating my meal, I bit down on a hard, jagged red piece of plastic that was hidden in the food. It was sharp enough that I almost chipped a tooth, and my mouth is still sore from the impact. This was not only painful but incredibly dangerous. When I brought it to the staff's attention, management offered an apology--but it felt rushed and insincere, as if they just wanted to brush it off and move on. No real accountability, no genuine concern for the seriousness of what happened. I've attached a photo of the plastic shard for reference--this should never end up in anyone's food. I used to enjoy coming here, but after this incident, I won't be returning. As a Queens resident, who doesn't normally go to places like this, I found the entire staff putting on an air of "we are a fancy-pants establishment." When we started eating a plant based diet 13ish years ago, Beyond Sushi had one location that quickly became one of our favorite spots. It was where we realized that food is a vehicle for flavor and texture, whatever it is made from. It inspired our cooking at home, and if someone visited us from out of town - we had to bring them there! They've opened more locations since then and greatly expanded the menu. Came here twice on my trip to NYC as their menu has such amazing recreations of vegan sushi. Though the prices are pretty high. I enjoyed the music and the servers were friendly - McAllister. They have a good deal for the lunch special. I think they should offer a combo plate, I would love to try one of every sushi roll. I realize that's not practical for the chef, so they should offer that during a 1 hour happy hour so everyone in the restaurant can share the same rolls. I'm sure a lot of food goes to waste when people order multiple things and leave half the roll on a table. I got the Grilled Chicken Bao from the shared plates section, it's only 3 buns, how is this shared? The buns were flavorless but it was a filling dish. The Black Truffle Udon was so mushy it was inedible. Spicy crab roll made of tofu and chickpeas was good but a bit too spicy for me. In the dim restaurant, they garnished the black plate with a ponzu sauce (which I didn't initially see) so every time I put my chopsticks down between bites they got covered in sauce unknowingly then my hands got covered it in when I touched the chopsticks. The tea is shockingly $12! Starters are $21. The drinks and desserts were really innovative!
