I think you have to be in the right mood to enjoy it, and the weather has to be nice, but when those two things happen...it's a fun place. First, it's best with all the windows open, which is why I say the weather has to be nice. With them closed, the place starts to feel small and busier than it really is; however, when the weather is nice and the windows are open, overlooking Bremen Hbf and the people going in and out, it is great. The drinks lists is large, and the prices are pretty fair, even for mixed drinks. The mixed drinks are not poured particularly strong, but are fine. The service is friendly and fast, and the bartenders are usually willing to hang out and chat if it is not too busy. And since my German is not what it used to be, I will say that it's nice that they almost all speak very good English (and in some cases, fantastic, almost accent-free English). They are also willing to work with me on my German, so that's cool. I like to go here after my last day of work when I am in town - when it is nice out, Friday is done, I am heading home the next morning, and just want to relax with a few drinks and friendly people. I was introduced to this establish through a co-worker who happened to be in Bremen at the same time, and who has often gathered with his hometown friends to grab a pint and reminisce on all they have missed during their years apart. I felt welcomed by their company, as well as the staff and the local regulars who call this pub their home turf. There is a romantic, old world quality that I can't express, other than by saying the Spitzel Gebel feels familiar, even as a first time visitor. It feels like a community, even to a stranger. My friend and I ordered two beers, and the landlady brought them to our table, where we paid. However when I tried to order a second time, she took the money but failed to bring the drinks over. After about 20 minutes of waiting (we thought that maybe she had a rush on) I went over to find out what had happened. She asked me for the money again and kept insisting we had received the drinks we paid for. I spoke in the best German I could (I am English but live in the area) and a local man at the bar tried to explain to her as well. However she kept repeating that we had received our drinks and avoided making eye contact with me. After several minutes of this my friend and I left. This soured our experience of what could be a delightful little pub and I doubt I will ever return. I advise anyone considering a drink in the area not to bother with this place, well definitely not if there is an elderly woman at the bar, and to always ensure you receive your drink before you pay for it.
