Dinner with Bien Hen was definitely a great experience. As we coming in their employees was there together greet us as well as open the doors and welcoming us. Super super A+ for Vietnamese's restaurant. Okay now its come to food taste. We originally came to get some seafood ( Oc Mong Tay & etc) but they sold out so we went with wild boar and oysters. I would said and considered about the wild boar dish, it was bit too salty, its good but its definitely too salty. Maybe if they can adjust a bit it would be so perfect. The oyster however was meeting our expectations and it was amazing, the flavor and well-cooked. Dropped in on a Friday night with friends. Doubt I'll be back. Too many other restaurants in the area with better execution and service. For starters, one of the pros is available and free parking. I arrived early (Ran time) just in case I needed to do laps around the lot hoping and praying for a spot. Not that night. I pulled right into a spot. Sat and waited until just before the witching hour. Large groups would be the next pro. No reservation as they don't take reservations during the rush. At least that's what I was told by the staff. I was just asked to drop my name on the Yelp waitlist. Feeling good about how the night would go, as soon as we were seated, it went downhill from there. First off - not friendly at all. I'm sitting at the end of the table so I asked the server for her name. She rudely exclaimed, it's server like it's printed on her badge. First, I can't see it and I could have dealt without the attitude because I would prefer to ask for her by name as I'm in the likely position to be asking for things for the table. A few times over the course of the meal, I was overheard by others in the restaurant - "Hey server!" - which to me if I heard, would have thought I was an asshole. But that's what management accepts as she was wearing the badge printed that way as opposed to having their name printed on it. Party of ten. Before the entire party even ordered, food was being delivered to the table. Understand why a restaurant would want food ready for the rush so that diners aren't sitting around waiting during the cooking process but several of the dishes were overcooked. And dry. Felt like the dishes were sitting under a heat lamp waiting for someone to order it. Also appreciated how I ordered a drink only to have to ask for it multiple times before it was served. Made sure to check that the drink orders weren't duplicated seeing as I had to ask several times each time. I normally don't rate places with one or two stars unless I'm not happy. In this case, I held off not providing my thoughts but something should be said hopefully for those in a position to effect change to address OR so potential diners know what to possibly expect should they decide to try this place out. read more

Looking for a random seafood restaurant in the area and found this place. Went on a Sunday evening, there's a little bit of wait time. You sign in on the ipad outside the entrance through Yelp. Plenty of seating outside while you wait. They have a couple of outdoor seating with heater. They have plenty of selection (see menu on the photos) and I would say it is comparable to Oc & Lau which I've been to countless of times. This is one of those older, long-standing seafood spots that locals clearly know about. It reminds me a lot of Oc & Lau, but a bit more reasonably priced. I've heard they get much busier at night, but we stopped by in the middle of the day for a light seafood snack while we were out and about. The restaurant itself isn't very big, and I can imagine it getting pretty packed during peak hours. It wasn't too busy when we came, which made for a relaxed experience. It's definitely more of a hidden gem vibe -- not the prettiest or most modern place, and you can tell it's been around for a while -- but that's kind of part of its charm. Food-wise, everything we ordered was good. My favorite dish was the plain grilled razor clam with butter and green onions (Ốc Móng Tay Nướng Mỡ Hành). Simple, flavorful, and cooked just right. It seems like their basic grilled dishes are solid across the board. My cousin loved the Coconut Sea Snail with Basil Leaves (Ốc Len Xào Dừa). The coconut flavor was rich and aromatic, though I personally would've preferred it just slightly saltier. We also had the catfish sour soup (Canh Chua Cá Bông Lau), which was well-priced and came with plenty of fish. The flavor was good, but I could tell it had a heavier hand with MSG. We went to a famous oc restaurant on a Tuesday night but the wait was 160 minutes?!? So we quickly yelped and found Bien Hen Restaurant. A great location with plenty of parking and GUESS WHAT? A live yelp waitlist! We love YELP and easy wait times. Waited 20 minutes as they prepared our table. We looked over the menu in the meantime and already knew what we wanted. As soon as we were seated they gladly took our order. We got the grilled razor clams with butter and green onions and grilled scallops with butter and green onions. A friend of a friend (the most reliable source, obviously) insisted that Bien Hen was even better than Oc & Lau. We rolled in on a Saturday at lunchtime... and were seated immediately. No vibrating buzzer. No "45 minutes... maybe." Already a win. The staff were on it -- attentive, responsive, and actually making eye contact. Meanwhile, Oc & Lau's servers have mastered the rare art of speed-walking while carefully avoiding all human interaction. But let's get to the main event: the food. Flavor-wise, Oc & Lau still wears the crown. Sorry, Bien Hen -- your dishes were good! Solid 8/10 territory. But Oc & Lau hits that 9/10 flavor high note that keeps people willing to age in the waiting line. I've been a loyal customer for a few years now but recently this Mother's day I was really disappointed. I called in my order 1.5 hrs before my pickup time and it still wasn't ready when I came. This restaurant is a family favorite! Everything I have ever ordered here has been solid. Their seafood dishes have the best pricing compared to similar restaurants in this area. The Lau #3 Hot Pot is like canh chua and my mom's favorite. It comes with banana blossom, bean sprouts, celery, tomato's, mushrooms, a ton of herbs, rice noodles, and a whole red tilapia. Their Whole Grilled Squid is great and the green sauce is just like the street food style seafood sauce. Their Goat Curry is amazing and the Mango Squid salad is one of my favorite dishes. Bien Hen is an authentic Vietnamese Seafood Gem--definitely a must-try in Westminister! Don't expect your typical manila clams. Here, they serve anything from fried catfish to blood clams to small and large escargot. There are so many types of seafood that I've only heard of through the grapevine, but never had the opportunity to try, that is, until now! First of all, the seafood is insanely fresh! The five of us ordered the following, along with a 2.5L pitcher of beer: Mango Squid Salad & Mango Melo Melo Salad: This was one of my favorites of the night! It had the perfect balance of salty, sweet, and tart. The fish sauce was on-point and the mango just made the entire dish so bright. Both of these dishes tasted just about the same, but if I had to choose, I prefer the squid since it came with bigger slices so the texture was more apparent. Coconut Swirly Escargot with Basil Leaves: A vietnamese classic. I grew up eating these and this was even better (shhh don't tell my aunt!) I loved the coconut sauce and the snail meat was so tender. I ended up dipping the other seafood in the sauce! Garlic Butter Grilled / Peppercorn Escargot: This was absolutely delicious and I prefer this over the small escargot. These were some massive escargot with a nice chewy texture. It doesn't need much sprucing compared to the smaller escargot so I appreciated the option of either pepper or garlic butter--both 'sauces' were equally delicious. Grilled Blood Cockle w/ Buttered Green Onions: Everything about this dish was just about perfect. I loved the generous toppings of crushed peanuts, deep fried garlic, and green onion oil. I also loved that it came on a hot plate! My only critique is that the clams were slightly overcooked so it was a bit too rubbery for me. Spicy Grilled Squid: Grilled well done with just the right amount of chew that I would expect for grilled squid. The highlight was definitely the green sauce that came with it. Fish Sauce Fried Chicken Wings: An umami bomb for sure! The chicken wings and drumsticks could've been a little bigger, but the flavor explosion all but made up for it. The wings were lightly crisp, but still juicy inside. Butter Fried Chicken Wings: While I think I prefered the fish sauce wings by a margin, this was still really good. The highlight of this dish was the light crisp of the fry on the chicken that wasn't as apparent when coated with fish sauce. Loved it! Shaken Beef with Udon Noodles: The noodles left a bit to be desired--I think I generally just prefer other types of noodles though. But the shaken beef was probably some of the best I've ever had--incredibly tender and flavorful. I do wish they gave more overall though. The portion seemed more like an appetizer than an entree. Stir Fried Crispy Egg Noodle: Another Vietnamese classic. It was pretty standard, nothing special but got the job done to make sure we were all full. The prices were fairly reasonable given that this is a specialty seafood restaurant. With everything we ordered, we all left full and content. The vibe is casual but cozy. We sat outside and loved that they had heaters--it made for a really comfortable meal. All in all, Bien Hen is a fantastic spot for anyone craving bold Vietnamese seafood flavors. Luckily for me, I was running late and didn't have to make the decision. We ended up with chicken feet, shaken beef with macaroni, and snail green mango salad. Last night around 9 p.m., I came in with my family, including my two kids. When we arrived, they gave us one high chair. At first they brought two, but my husband said one was fine since our older child could sit with him. Everything was okay until one of the dishes came out. We ordered ốc biển nướng tiêu, but they brought us bơ tỏi instead. When they served it, they placed the hot dish right in front of my baby. I understand servers place plates on the table, but basic common sense would be to avoid putting steaming hot food in front of a toddler. We also asked for water for our kids. They never brought it until the very end of the meal, and the server just said she forgot. I have to bring my own water bottle for my girls and my wipes to use since they didn't bothered to give us more napkins. The ốc len was cold like they just heat it up quick and brought it out quick. Another issue was utensils. There were only three or four spoons on the table, and since we were eating snails, we needed more. When we requested additional spoons, they only brought one. Throughout the whole meal, the service was very poor. Four or five staff members were just standing around talking and gossiping. No one checked on us even once. And when we left, all five of them were standing by the door--they just opened it without saying 'thank you' or anything. Overall, the service was terrible. I don't think I'll come back again. We had come in for a meal and ordered some soup along with a few other dishes. A server brought over a couple of bowls for the soup but one of them was dirty (oil at the bottom of bowl along with fried oily batter on side of bowl). I called her back and asked for a new bowl. There I see herwalk to where the bowls are, and instead of giving me a clean bowl, she uses a yellow towel (a communal one that ALL the servers wipe their hands on) and wipes the bowl down and brings it back to our table. I couldn't believe my eyes! So, I called over another server and asked for the manager. Instead of getting the manager (since getting him or her would be useless at a Viet restaurant since they'd allow anything to save time and money), she apologized on the other server's behalf. The young thin server with glasses who wiped the bowl down with a filthy towel never came by to apologize. I think that the servers need another round of food handling course and each server at this restaurant should be closely monitored as they do not know the practice of basic cleanliness. It was just so disappointing because we, as well as many of our family members, have frequented this restaurant. Also, the food taste has also gone down. This place used to be great but when things are great, that's when management focus less on quality and customer satisfaction and more on saving a dollar here and there, even if it means potentially making customers sick.
