We trained from Brussels to Bruges for the afternoon and I love finding myself in towns where I can really see myself returning, places where you feel off the grid in a really nice way. We'd planned to have dinner here but did not make a booking and really lucked out with the last table open when we came in. Please, ensure you make a booking if you want to dine here. I had no idea how consistently full they'd be and felt grateful the entire time to have snagged a spot. When I tell you my fish stew has to be one of the top 5 things I've ever eaten in life, I am not kidding. It was so spectacular. I read about Cambrinus and decided to try it while I was in Bruges. I was not disappointed! When I arrived for dinner, they were quite full, and it looked like you needed a reservation. However, I was alone and was lucky enough to get a small table to myself. They have an extremely wide selection of beer; the menu looks like a massive encyclopedia. The beers were decently priced too. In terms of food, I was quite impressed. The rabbit was exceptionally good and massive (almost enough for 2). It paired very nicely with the prunes. That dish was so packed with flavor, I think it is the most delicious pasta with red sauce type thing I have ever eaten. My BF had the rabbit, and he loved it. It was a very hearty portion. I've been wanting to try some fish waterzooi (stew) while in Belgium but most places seem to serve chicken. I found this place that served it, so we called on a Monday around noon to reserve for 1:30 PM later that afternoon. I am so glad we did because when we got there, there was still a bit of a wait, and shortly after we were seated, it was so packed that they were turning people away. I had the fish stew (with salmon, sole fillet, North Sea shrimp) and hubby had the Irish ribeye with garlic butter and French fries. The fish stew okay. There's lots of fish in it and it's very hearty. It does get a bit much after a while and you'll feel heavy after eating it. I would definitely recommend splitting this with someone. The ribeye was nice, especially with the garlic butter. I appreciated the small side salad that same with it. Fries tasted liked your standard frozen restaurant fries. We also ordered cheese croquettes to start, but that didn't come out until after we already started eating our entrees and by then, we were already kind of full. So we couldn't really enjoy it and kind of just forced ourselves to eat it. Overall, I wouldn't say the food is anything amazing. Service here is pretty slow. I'm not sure if it was because it was busy, or if it's standard here. We even had a hard time getting somebody to take our order. A few minutes later, we were seated at a small half table and bar stools, right next to the bar. Worth the wait ! I got here at 6ish and they were super duper busy. Since I was solo, I did not want to take up a table but unfortunately no bar seats were available. The staff was absolutely wonderful - they told me if I wanted to come by after 8 pm they would keep a table for me :) and boy was it worth it. Wanted to try this place for dinner due to the hotel's recommendations. We were informed when we arrived that we needed a reservation for our party of 9. The place was packed and I can see why reservations were required. Before we left, we made reservations for the following day for lunch. Upon returning the next day, the restaurant was not that full for lunch. Seating was tight and cramped. There were only tables for four at the most so they combined two tables together for us but it was in a weird location where there wasn't much room to spread out. The menu was like a book. Beside a brief history of the restaurant and the huge selection of beers, the actual food menu was only a few pages. Their claim to fame was their huge beer selection. When ordering, my party was basically divided between a few of us only ordering a couple of starters for lunch and some ordering an entrée. Food came out quickly but only a few dishes. After about 30+ minutes waiting, we inquired about the rest of the order and was then informed that they will be served after the starters were done. The waitress should have known that some of us were having only starters as the meal when she individually took our orders. So the end result was that the people who ordered entrees were finally served after the people with starters had finished eating. After we were finally served, the food wasn't tasty at all; not worth the wait nor the price they charged. Burger was tasteless, roasted chicken was dry, and fries were short and soggy pieces of potatoes. What really ticked me off was that they charged me a dollar for two spoons of ketchup for my bland burger with an oversized bun; hence the one star rating. read more

During our walk through charming Bruges we almost forgot the time. It was already past lunchtime but luckily this place still served meals. Our Bulldog was welcome to come in as well. It's a really nice, cosy place. A place you feel like keep ordering beers, sit by the window and watch the world go by. Staff was friendly, recommended some good beers. I brought my family here for dinner and I would just like to start out by saying that I'm big on the "when in Rome" adage and try to immerse myself as much as possible in the food. I did a bunch of research and this place came up enough that it was one of the many places I decided to make a reservation. Belgian cuisine has not exactly been a hit with my parents so far on this trip. In fact, on the morning of our visit, my mother asked to see the menu of the place I had planned for that evening because she was considering "overriding" another restaurant serving local fare. Everyone made her feel bad about saying that though because I really did put a pathetic amount of time into researching and planning our trip. We showed up 20=30 min earlier than our reservation and there was already a bunch of people waiting at the entrance. The staff member who was greeting us said right out of the gate "we're already full if you don't have a reservation". Sorry to be a disappointment, but we did have a reservation. She was skeptical and double checked my name and the time a few times but eventually, reluctantly, gave in and sat us down. After that warm welcome, we perused their gigantic menu which is conveniently in multiple languages. I greatly appreciated the vegetarian options which were more than many of the other Belgian restaurants we patronized. The ambiance is ADORABLE and super quirky. I absolutely love it in there. Fortunately, our waitress was friendlier than the host. I would have wanted to order a flight but I could barely see the board with the draught beers and the menu did not offer any description about what type of beer the options were or tha alcohol content so I elected to try their beer and lemonade combo. They have other combos too, including beer and cola and champagne and beer, which GF ordered. To start, I ordered the cheese croquettes which were fantastic. They were crispy and the cheese was warm and soft. The acccompanying salad was tasty. My parents ordered the asparagus soup with smoked salmon and completely lost their minds over it. My mom, who had talked a bunch of shit earlier, mentioned numerous times that it was the best soup we have had on this trip. If you know how chilly it has been, you already know that we have been consuming a lot of soup. . For our mains, most of us ordered pastas. I ordered the vegetarian tagliatelle which I found disappointing. The noodles themselves were too soft and the veggies were a bit mushy. The flavor was nothing to write home about. My dad ordered the scampi tagliatelli which he really enjoyed. My mom ordered the mushroom and truffle spaghetti which she adored. She said this was the best meal of the TRIP and couldn't stop raving about it. I tried it and her noodles were cooked perfectly with a really creamy and delicious sauce serving a nice truffle flavor. My little cheese croquette ordered fish stew, she says, "it was very rich. It was good but it was just very creamy and cheesy". I helped her with the accompanying fries and they were crispy and warm. I liked the mayo that came with them, it was more flavorful than other mayo I have had here but I may just be pulling that out of my ass. I did encounter a pool of what I hope was grease at the bottom of the bowl and I'm not sure whether that was a good or a bad thing. Ultimately this was a really good experience and I can see why it is extremely busy. I would absolutely recommend stopping in for a meal if you are in town. read more

It wasn't busy at first but filled up as it got later because people eat later there than I'm used to. I got steak and mussels and both were excellent. The steak was a little rare for me but I dipped it in the mussels for a few seconds, which made the broth even better! The broth the mussels were cooked in was so delicious that we were drinking it like soup. My friend got the fish stew. Meh food, poor service. No idea why this place is popular! There are much, much better spots. Avoid this tourist trap. We arrived for our Wednesday reservation at 7:15pm, and was pointed by an older lady holding menus to a table off to the side with no words (fairly dismissively). We did not receive any menus. When a server came by to take our order a long 15 minutes later, we showed that we didn't have anything to choose from. Things didn't really get better from there. We weren't in the mood for a big heavy dish, so instead we ordered a full size salad to share, bitterballen (round croquettes), and an onion soup (each). One of us had a beer flight (€11.50) and the other a large bottle of water (€9). It's not as if we were not ordering a reasonable amount of food and drinks, which made the next thing to happen so odd. We asked that the salad come out before the soup and bitterballen. When the salad arrived, we were given two thin small cocktail napkins and a fork, knife, and spoon separately that a server was holding. The napkins were not large enough to put in our laps. We noticed other tables were given silverware in a paper sleeve with a standard paper dinner napkin inside. We asked if we could have a larger napkin, too. We were emphatically told no, that the napkin was part of the silverware ("it's all one thing") and we could not have that. We were allowed one more thin cocktail napkin each after asking some more. No large napkins for us! Many of these service deficiencies could be overlooked if the food was great. But it wasn't. The salad--a "fresh salad with goat cheese, covered in bacon with a raspberry vinaigrette"--was massively overdressed and quite frankly was a bit worrisome to eat. The bacon was American style bacon but was soft and squishy (undercooked), likely because it was completely wrapped around the goat cheese. Any decent cook would know there would be no way to get the bacon crispy without melting the goat cheese. A sensible chef would have cooked the bacon separately and then covered (as the menu said!) the cheese with it. This would have added some textural element as everything was squishy in the salad, including the pine nuts! We didn't finish it. The soup was just meh. Yes, it was an onion soup, but it was very thin and the onions clearly had not been caramelized but instead just cooked in some beef broth. We were hoping for a crispy crouton with cheese floating on top (how delicious and easy in Bruges would some aged Gouda have been?) but the one thin soggy piece of bread was sunk into the soup completely, with the cheese tasteless. We mostly finished this. The bitterballen were plunked down on the table after the soup with the literal words "here you go". It was impossible to tell what any of the flavors were. Some were ok, but at least 3 of them did not seem fully cooked (like they were dropped from frozen into the deep fryer) and the insides were like thin runny paste. We didn't finish those, either. The beer flight was a good selection and value. The check came quickly (€79). We were puzzled as to why people kept coming in to this restaurant. As we were seated near the door, we could hear that it was recommended by the places where people were staying. There must be some terrible front desk people at local hotels or they are getting kickbacks. Don't go here unless you are only looking for a place to drink some local beer on tap. read more

Visited Cambrinus based on a recommendation by our hotel front desk. If you want to sample beers from Belgium and get a taste of Flemish cuisine in Brugge, look no further. Cambrinus has about 10 beers on tap and a cooler wall behind the bar stocked full of ...glorious beer! We started the meal with a flight of beers of the bar's selections. There was one we already knew we didn't prefer and the allowed us to swap it out. After that, we sampled more tasty options from the taps. Gawd, I love Belgium! For dinner we had the fish stew and sliced chicken. The fish stew was rich and super flavorful. I was worried I wouldn't like a stew of fish. This is not boiled fish. This is a delicacy. Delicious! Order a side of their sliced homemade bread to sop it up! Yum. We also usually don't order chicken at a restaurant, but my daughter couldn't bare to order the rabbit. I was pleasantly surprised, no floored, with the flavor. The chicken was a spot-on choice. We came at the peak of tourist season. If you do the same, make a reservation. They were jam packed. Went on a friend's recommendation and got very lucky as we got the last non-reserved table. You definitely want to reserve a table ahead of time. The beer menu is incredible. At least a dozen pages of bottled beers of all styles and sizes. I opted for the Malheur 12 which was one immediately one of my new favorite beers. Amazingly, every beer I saw around the restaurant was poured in the appropriate glass, every bottle. Very impressive. The food was delicious as well. I went for the carbonades which may not be the most original, but they were great. Deliciously tender meat and plenty of meat. Great sauce as well. Would definitely recommend. She gleefully recommended beers that matched our pallet and bantered with us a bit while we enjoyed some drinks, a pork belly and mango salad (more belly than salad!), and spirited, cozy, quaint, classic, convivial ambiance. This was the most disappointing part of our entire trip to Belgium. We popped in between meals to enjoy a couple of Belgian beers. We received an unlabeled beer instead of one of the ones we ordered. Yelp was telling us to come check our Cambrinus for some good Belgian grub. We were starving after walking around Bruges for so long, so it was time to settle in and grab a late bite just before heading back to sightseeing. Upon entering, we weren't quite sure whether to wait to be seated or simply go grab an empty table. The standard seemed to get the attention of a server and have them seat you. They seem to try to keep groups together and avoid sharing tables with other guests, which I can appreciate. They have a VAST selection of drafts (and dear God it was), which made it exciting and intimidating to select a beer of choice. Their entire menu was a comprehensive beer list I swear, so definitely ask for recommendations. I opted for a flight so I could try more of their offerings during our meal. Food here was rather on the pricy side but I suppose that's to be expected given how they cater to mostly tourists. I can't say that I was wowed by anything but they did make a great snack. We ordered the beef tartar and some fried croquettes, each dish having Begian fries included of course. Our tartar was near €30 which is high in my opinion. I'd prob just opt for more beer and some smaller appetizers next time. My piece of advice? Skip on the food but come and stay for the beer. You won't be disappointed. read more

It would be easy to be skeptical about a restaurant that uses local beer in many of their dishes. But I'm telling you that these guys pull it off! Their beer selection and knowledge is amazing, and their food is excellent. By all means start with something to drink. I started with a flight of local beer and it was excellent. Especially the fruit beer, which I would not normally order. With the beer we opted for what the snack menu calls "Homemade Bread made with our Housebeer Gambrivinus with Beer Cheese" thinking it would be a plate of cheese and bread. Not exactly: what we received was a simple cheese sandwich which was amazingly elevated by the beer infused bread and cheese. With it, I also had "Flemish Onion Soup with 'Oud Brugge' Cheese and Beer 'Brugse Zot'." It was a fantastic version of onion soup. For my dinner I had "Filets of Sole with Tartar Sauce and fresh Fries" which I mistakingly thought would be fried, like fish and chips. It wasn't fried, it was pan seared. The short: we came in here to warm off on a rainy day, and enjoyed the soup, the beer, and the cheese. The longer: we walked in and got a table near the back. The menu is HUGE. It's a big book with the history of the restaurant, the menu translated into 4 different languages, and a list/explanation of 400 beers. This place is home to the lambic beer. So, we took the waitresses recommendation and shared one. It was sour and different than anything we'd ever tried. I liked it, but my friend didn't love it. We decided to start with the beer cheese. February 2018: As we were walking down the street we enter Cambrinus but the husband mentioned that it looks different from the pictures he has seen. Oh this place looks like just the bar, we wanted dinner. So we looked at the address and realized we were not there yet. Why are they on the same street? They gave us a heavy ass book as a menu to look over and definitely smart to start with a flight. I believe they have over 400 beers. Can you believe that? A local man saw me and my friend struggling to find a place to eat and stopped us on the street to tell us about this little number after we told him we were looking for traditional Belgian cuisine. That man knows his stuff. We walked in and were informed by the waitress that there weren't any tables open, but that we could stand and wait if we wanted. We chose to, and thank goodness for that because within two minutes, we watched two of the waitresses point at us a few times (as we were the only ones waiting for a table) and then they proceeded to remove the "reserved" sign from a table and allowed us to sit there. That's what I knocked one star off for. Throughout our time here, the service wasn't very good. They spoke excellent English, but they were not responsive at all to requests. Our waitress took her break in the middle of our meal and no other servers would help us. Perhaps this is more typical in Belgium, but we hadn't experienced that anywhere else here before. However the food was DELICIOUS. I ordered the Sliced Chicken and was absolutely in love, as was my friend with the Steak Tartare. They also have the largest selection of beers I have ever seen in my whole life. It made up a literal book, with pages upon pages of different beers available. It was crazy. Bierbrasserie Cambrinus, in a historical building built in 1699, was jam-packed in the middle of the week but we walked in just to try our luck. I totally dug the brew hall feel to the place. It was toasty warm inside. It sure was a refuge to the chilling weather out there. The workers were so busy, dishes stacked on their forearms doing the balancing act while meandering amid the crowds. It took them a minute or two to notice us. The waiter switched to English automatically,"zhust beer ou dinnair?" Uh, oui oui beer and dinner, s'il vous plaît! We wanted Both because we were starving after a long day of walking around town in the freezing cold. Without making a reservation, we expected to be turned away or have to wait a long while. Surprisingly, they managed to snatch a table for us straight away since the party hadn't arrived. The very first thing our waitress delivered to our table looked like a phone book. Holy Moly! That was their beer list. They have 400 different kinds of beers and it's not an idle boast. Instead of perusing the many pages, we put our faith in the waitress and chose from her top ten. Without hassle, we proceeded to relax and soak in the welcoming homey vibe. I've learned that each beer must be poured and served in its designated drinking vessel in order to enhance its flavor and body. Who knew the shape and the size of a glass would have such a big impact on the brew right before you down it. But a beer connoisseur can tell you all about it. Our dinner options were comparatively less elaborate. The menu fit on a single page. We started with the Tomato Bisque with Small Meatballs. Loved this simple yet comforting starter! It was creamy and delicious. The Flemish Carbonades was excellent as the Gulden Draak beer gave it the richness that I so enjoyed. The restaurant has a wide variety of food on their menu. The food is plentiful and delicious. The drink menu is extensive. It takes awhile to go through it as it is in three languages. Our waiter happily answered our questions. We were there on a Sunday night, with heavy rain, and all the tables were full. They took us in even though we didn't have a reservation. Of course, we found this place through Yelp on our first night in Brugge. It was our first restaurant stop, so with no frame of reference to other spots in town, I'd say this restaurant was pretty good, but I can't say if it was better than others in the area. Actually, given the nearly perfect review on Yelp, I was a little disappointed with the experience. I was expecting to be blown away, but instead, I left feeling satisfied and full, and like we didn't get ripped off, all in all a good experience, but probably won't return. Pros: Very extensive beer list Near the square and easy to find Reasonable prices Well prepared food The typically slow European service, but adequate and English speaking. Cons: Very meat heavy menu - Mostly steaks, two chicken dishes, and a rabbit dish. Five pasta dishes. Very little that was vegetarian. No alcohol free beer for pregnant yelpers like me. Extremely loud with crowds of drunk rowdy men. What we had: Irish Ribeye Steak - Very fatty (even for a ribeye), cooked rare (asked for medium rare, but hubby was ok with what he got), served with fries and salad. He thought it tasted good, but it didn't seem like anything special. Spaghetti Bolognese - Quite tasty, huge portion, a bit too much cheese on top (I didn't think that was possible) and served piping hot. Would order again. Cheese croquettes - Gooey bricks of deep fried cheese - not entirely cheese, but almost like a Dutch bitterballen with a lot of cheese in it. Extremely rich and of course, delicious. We were there at 5pm on a Friday evening and if we had gotten there any later, I doubt we would have gotten a table. Keep that in mind. They do take reservations. We were doing a walking tour of Bruges for the first time and we dined in at the place as recommended by our local Belgium tour guide. I am glad we did. This is a full on bar and restaurant. As we were pressed for time, we got the mussels entree in curry sauce which wow, the portion and flavor were really spot on. The mussels were tender and portion was outrageous. It came in a nice presentation and food was piping hot. We also got a fish soup which was absolutely delicious and they didn't slump out on the ingredients. Got French fries on the side. To warn you, they charged for mayo or ketcheup. All in all, a great experience at a very cozy place. Oh yeah, this place has free wifi and wait staffs are very friendly. Highly commended for cost is decent for being so close to the Historium and city square. read more

Amazing!! Come early between 1100 and 1200 or you probably won't get a table as this place fills up fast. It is tucked away just outside of the main market place in Bruges and far from the tourist traps. You're greeted by friendly faces and a warm wooden interior. Order the Beer Tasting menu and the Brewers Menu. I cannot remember all of the beers I got, but it was 4 wonderful Belgian beers for around 10 euro. The Brewers menu is a pre-fix three course menu with these amazing cheese croquettes to start, a flemish beef strew with frites for the entree followed by a wonderful creme brûlée. I think if you order an additional starter and a random beer at the end like I did, you can easily split the meal between two people. Just under 50 euro for all my food.
