The main gentleman running the museum that day I came was welcoming and clearly very passionate about the history of Volendam. We received a few laminated sheets of information (available in English) that would provide us with additional information at some of the exhibits. The gentleman guided us through the main exhibit entrance and let us know which direction we should go through the exhibits and provided a brief summary of the displays. While the museum is not the most modern and interactive, I did find value in viewing the static displays and learning about Volendam through the snippets of information presented. If you're ever in the area and have about 45-60 minutes to spare, I would recommend checking out this museum.

Get a drink at the bar and order whatever you like from wherever in the world. We started with Portuguese chouriço sitting at a table with a bunch of friendly women who where enjoying all kinds of Turkish dishes. Then we had a great burger as the Kids enjoyed a real (yes real!) Italian pizza. The atmosphere got better by the minute as the live music was filling the loft like space. You gotta check this out if you are in the neighborhood! They've got stuff to eat from all over the world, from sushi to braai and all real authentic.

This is the old Netherlands ship works - some large battle ships came out of this building. But now it's a fantastic space for creatives and their studios - we were fortunate to see graffiti artists at work on some new installations outside. There is also the STRAAT Museum which we did not take the time to do. It's easy to get to - Ferry 4 is right outside Central Station - ferries are free - and it takes right to the entry.

I came especially to see the Anne Frank mural by Eduardo Kobra which I was really excited about and it didn't disappoint. I loved it. NDSM had such a funky cool vibe, covered in amazing graffiti and street art and there was even more art in the warehouses, some that are free to view and some you have to pay to get in. I saw a lamppost piled to the top with birdhouses, I saw a van stuffed with mannequin limbs, I saw a red crate covered in big black spiders but I was more interested in the street art to be honest and NDSM is the place to go to see some amazing street art. There are cool places to eat and drink and it's just a lovely chilled place to wander.

The carrot ginger soup with a slice of bread and butter was so delicious. Our friend enjoyed his avocado toast with a poached egg. Lunch for four with drinks was 44 euros which I think is a bargain for a nice lunch at a museum cafe. The museum itself is a bit odd. Entry to the special exhibits is up a flight of stairs. The exhibit we viewed was completely in the dark and a bit risqué. Definitely not appropriate for kids. The permanent collections are down the stairs with a separate entry that requires your ticket to be scanned again. Would not make a special trip here, but perfect for a lunch stop if you are doing This is Holland and the A'DAM Lookout Tower and Swing. Included on the I Amsterdam Card. Just have your card scanned. No need for a reservation.

This iconic building houses the national film archives and three annual exhibitions in addition to a permanent one. It has four movie theaters, a stunning restaurant and bar and finally, a gift shop. Forget Starbucks. Hop on a free ferry in front of the train station. Bring your laptop and work remotely in a tiered, cinematic space with dozens of others who vie for favorite view points in the restaurant. The food at the Eye Bar restaurant is fine, but the real joy is the people watching and the view. Currently on view is a retrospective of Werner Herzog's work.

On our trip to The Netherlands, we took a train to Haarlem to visit the Museum van de Geest- museum…read moreof the mind. I was a psychology minor in undergrad and so was my friend, so we were both excited to visit. This museum was super close to the train station as well. If you aren't familiar with mental health disorders, this might be a good museum for you, as the majority of the exhibits have people sharing stories about their lives and mental health struggles. Some of those stories are also shared through art at the end of the tour. I did enjoy reading the quotes and took pictures of some to look at on days when I struggle. I wish this museum had been more interactive and easier to navigate. I found myself needing breaks due to the content itself and the vast amount of exhibits, but the museum doesn't have many benches, chairs, or places to sit. The large room toward the end has a lot of exhibits on mental healthcare history, and it was my favorite area, but it was a little busy and overwhelming, especially at the end of the tour. Like Nick said, I wouldn't make a trip to Haarlem just for this museum, but if you have the time it is convenient and a good place to visit.

The location is a complete winner for a wedding ceremony or private gathering. The staff and food was on point. At some point in the future, I hope to explore more of the environment. I look forward to returning back to explore the rest of the charming landscape. Het Dolhuys also is attached to a museum near the cafe. In the past it was once a church and hospital, but now has been converted into a museum, cafe and park for the public to visit.

If you want to see windmills in Amsterdam, this is the place to go…read more Beautiful scenery in the surrounding area around the windmills. Kind of a small village town. Some of the buildings are living quarters and some are shops such as cheese, clogs, and chocolate. We were able to go inside one of the working windmills and see how it all worked. There are small steep set of stairs, so be prepared. They're not high, but space it tight. Nice experience and worth taking a trip out to see the windmill

The whole day there could actually have been free, but I paid in advance online for extra experience, like going up to the balcony of the windmills! I was so amazed by how close I was with the blade! The clog "museum" was so cool with alternating English and Dutch demo every 10 minutes. The cheese zone was fascinating. The hot cocoa hut was a fun experience. Honestly, I felt like I was in a dream just by walking along the curvy paths. Can't say I'll be back soon, and the photos I took simply don't do justice to how beautiful this place is. Oh, I miss this place already!
