Today's visit to Big 5 Sporting Goods was very nice and pleasant. I was in search of some earthworms for my Australian arowana but had a hard time locating the suckers myself. I inquired with the front cashier if they sold such an item and she said yes, asked me how much I was looking for and then called it over the intercom. As I was waiting for the back staff to bring the worms to the front, we had a nice conversation of if and when it was going to snow in Southern California. I come here to get my shoes when my old ones die on me. The store is very clean and the cashiers so far have always been very friendly. Sometimes it's hard to find the person in the back that finds sizes for the shoes or they just are usually pretty busy but once you do get help from them they are quick to help and find the size I'm looking for. The sales here are pretty good, it's always my first place to check. They also have good prices on pepper spray which is very helpful for someone who likes to feel safe on their walks. read more

Well, here we are... Big 5 Sporting Goods. This place is truly a highlight for me. Big 5 staff members were helpful when they approached me with good customer service which made me proud. I am proud of the location because it's close to my house. It was my junior year of high school (nearly two years ago) I made the varsity golf squad as captain. My teacher; who was interestingly enough, was a history teacher taught golf at the end of his class. My teacher knew the place because some students didn't have enough money to buy golf clubs. I chose XTI Wilson which was the best idea ever. Approaching the check out and for me, it's worth coming back. Pretty average and an ALRIGHT with no mutual feelings. read more

The Store Manager Michael is a sorry sorry excuse for a Manager. He needs to fire himself and go find another job where there is zero interaction with people. I feel sorry for his employees who have to report to such an arrogant person. Went in to buy some new shoes for walking around in. They've quite a variety to choose from and usually have a lot of brands on sale on their weekly ad. The people here are pretty friendly and offer help without being asked. Incidentally, I also purchased a shotgun here a few years back. The ammo is crazy expensive so shop elsewhere for that (Walmart), but the salesman was, again, courteous and helpful. You'll encounter a lot of rude employees in gun shops who act as though they're doing you a favor, but not here. He was knowledgeable and willing to answer any and all questions I had. I actually came here after going to Field Time Sports and Guns since they ignored me. Oh well...I'll give my $400 to a place that makes me feel like a valued customer. read more

Horrible customer service. Stood at the knife counter for 20 minutes after we asked someone to come over. When we asked to see a knife he seemed bothered and rude. Did not ask us if we needed anything else nor did he ask about sharpening services. The cashier was also rude, and conducted our transaction without saying anything. We even had to ask what our total was and he looked annoyed. He was on the phone during our transaction and semi-threw our change on the counter. Glad to leave. Not coming back. read more

0 Stars for this Big 5. The customer service was horrible to say the least. Was going in to buy a shot gun for my protection. My husband had put everything on hold for me, so that all I had to do was fill out the paperwork and pick it up. It took forever to get anyone to wait on me, then when someone did (his name was Colin) he approached me with plastic hanging out of his mouth and chewing on it like a toothpick. He had greased backed hair and quite frankly looked like a crack head. After waiting forever he began to question why I was buying the gun. I stated for protection and to shoot it. Kinda thought it was odd. He said that he didn't feel comfortable selling to me because he thought it was for someone else. I gave him no reason for this, so I was shocked. Bottom line I will never step foot in a Big 5 again and I will make sure everyone I know never does either. Funny a guy that looked like someone I would NEVER sell a gun to, wouldn't sell to me. Bizarre! BTW - Went to Grants Gun Store down the street and had no problem. All future sporting good purchases will be done at Sports Chalet. read more

Devin is one the most helpful and cool guys at Big 5. His customer service was that excellent that when I happened to go to the Costa Mesa location I remembered he help me before at the Lake Forest location about a year ago. I was looking for an item that I thought was on sale but unfortunately missed out on the sales price. However, he able to honor the sales price for me still. Devin definitely represents the Big 5 brand well and I know he will provide the same excellent customer experience at whichever location he's at. Big 5 remains my main store of choice for all my sporting needs because of competitive pricing and service like this. I will be submitting this feedback to corporate. read more

Went in looking for a specific box of 9mm ammunition. They didn't have it but their assistant manager Brett had some other recommendations and he knew his stuff. I saw a shotgun I've been looking at and he told me all he knew about it and compared it to some other ones that are close in price/ quality. He even went out of his way to check for me when it is going to be on sale again. 4/5 stars only because they didn't have the ammo I was looking for, but 5/5 stars for customer service. If I could, I would give it no damn stars!!! My husband and I have been here several times and each time we had a good experience. The staff had been so knowledgeable and helpful BUT today was so bad!! We came to check some sunglasses out when we first got there we were greeted and everything seemed fine. When we finally got to the counter to see the sunglasses, the manager was there but since they called him over for an exchange we walked away and said nothing. Not even a "Give me a little bit, I be right with you" or even a "one second and someone will help you." He just walked right past us. Then it sounded like something happened at the register, like if all the coins fell out or something. Again he walked right past us with another associate and locked themselves in a room to what looked like they were recounting the register. After about 15-20 mins they both came out and the a manger finally decided to ask us if we needed help and began to help us. But suddenly told us that Sheila, the other associate would help us. We still stayed and said, "Okay, no problem." She proceeded to give us her back and start stocking some things. So I was like okay?! And my husband had to get her attention when we wanted to look at the other sunglasses as she had her back to us the whole time and the TWO times she helped us she was basically tossing the things onto the counter when she was taking the cases out from under!! Worst experience ever!! I literally just walked out because I couldn't believe how she was being! Even if I have to drive to a completely opposite location from my house, I will!!!! The store is conveniently located but always hit or miss when I go. I'm a coach and purchase a good amount from there. In fact, I recently purchased $280 worth of balls. I went in today to pick up a kicking tee. I looked around for a bit but then finally had to ask for help. The girl at the counter said that they have them in a bin in the back but not out yet. Instead of saying give me a few minutes and I'll grab you one, she suggested I go to Sports Chalet. I'm off to their now and will make that my go-to store in the future. Thanks Big 5! read more

The customer service at this location is horrible. Not one person asked if we needed help. When we got to the register I said I had a 10% coupon I found on Groupon which required that I sign up for their email list, so I asked could I sign up for the emails from Big 5, the cashier was extremely rude, told me that was a fake coupon and they had no more pamphlets to sign up for emails. I went in here to buy some soccer cleats. Simple enough? Not for the employees at this sporting goods store. I asked to try on three different pairs of cleats... each time the clerk brought back the wrong color, style or size. Taking way too long each time. On the last try, the clerk brought me a pair of women's cleats in 8.5 (I had asked for men's 10.5). He told me a women's 8.5 is equal to a men's 10.5. It was laughable. The BIG 5 chain does have a little bit of everything. However, most of the low end stuff they advertise...watches, sunglasses etc are pure junk. I have had numerous items that have fallen apart shortly after purchase and , depending on who you get to help you, may try to resolve it or blow you off to the main office customer service phone number. I have tried to get satisfaction on several occasions and have NEVER had their main customer service office fix the problem . On this day i tried to return a defective watch that was purchased originally in December 2012 and already replaced once because of just plain poor quality. Regardless of price, you should easily be able to get a month or two use out of something before it disintegrate's . However even the manager acknowledged it was garbage and his answer was to try to up-sell me and all with a very bad attitude to boot. Stay very far away from THIS store. read more

I spent 265$ today on night vision binoculars I asked for the $139 model. The salesperson was bored,dismissive,and unhelpful . He had no problem selling me the most expensive product available. When I asked for the item I wanted, he handed me the display model and said I was the only on he had. It was sticky and gooey and obviously well used. This evening, my wife and I went to this store and looking for a running shoes with memory foam. No staff to be found for assistance. We check the display and found a good shoe but no staffs still around. We were wondering where are the store employee, then after 5 mins., someone came out of the door with a sign that says EMPLOYEE ONLY. So my wife ask for her size and waited another 10 mins. He came out and went straight to the front door. Since he is tall, we can see him walking around the stores. Both my wife and I walk after him and she ask if he find her size. He said he didn't and walk away from her. I follow him and told him that at least he should inform her.... Damage has done and the late apology is not sincere. I hope this store go bankrupt so the staff will learn the value of costumer relationships. read more

Came from another Big 5 store because they didn't have the work boots (Bates Service Boots) I needed in stock. Found the boots on display. I stood there for 15 mins examining the boot and didn't get acknowledged by any of the employees in that section and I saw about three at one time. I come from a sales and customer service background and I was taught to acknowledge the customer asap even if you're busy. These guys didnt look busy at all. I decided to leave and purchase the boots online and pay the additional next day shipping fee. This is one of the reasons why brick and mortar stores will lose to online retailers. If you can't even offer your customers the necessary service these types of business will forever be beaten. read more
