I am not going to come here any more. I was suckered in by the ad again today. Good price on binoculars, and I need a pair. Interesting telescope on sale with coupon. Online reviews for both are high. So I gave them a chance. They didn't have the binoculars ...though I had to wait quite a while for someone to help me with them (they're behind the counter) They had one telescope left and the box looked like Satan's anus. Big 5 is a place to get sports gear you want cheap. The prices are low. The quality is low. There is no customer service to speak of. The selection is limited. But, the prices are low. So, deal with it. I have a policy of giving big chains a solid 3 stars for being exactly adequate for what they are. They kinda suck but in an expected sort of way. This Big 5 is smaller than other Big 5's. The clerk may send you to RWC for particular items because their selection is better. read more

Like many reviewers I live nearby and have been using this store as a last resort for sporting goods the last 20 years. Their product selection is mediocre at best. The store is a disorganized mess and it's hard to find things. With very few exceptions these last 20 years the staff has proven useless. To top it all off the store manager, just as so many other reviewers have experienced, is indeed rude and offensive in his manners beyond belief. This Saturday's visit was my last to this store, period. This place should go and leave much needed space to a business that works. read more

So I bought a pair of Coleman Lagoon sandals late last year and never wore them until this June. (Yes, I know, I should have known better!) It turns out that they were worse than a piece of junk - after wearing them about five times, the footbed padding had compressed so badly that the plastic rim ended up cutting my heels (and no, I'm not overweight). The left one was cut so deeply that it bled and got inflamed. The day before leaving for a vacation! Lucky, I guess, because I was going to bring those sandals?!?? After I got back from my vacation, I tried to return them. If you've read previous reviews, you can guess that the manager was less than interested and less than polite. Needless to say, I still have both the scar on my heel AND the sandals. I can't wear them, and I don't want to give them away even though they're barely worn. Note to self: do not buy cheap sandals. Or at least, do not buy them at Big 5. Two stars for some cheap stuff, if you must buy it there. Just be totally, absolutely sure that it fits and doesn't injure you. And don't buy Coleman Lagoon sandals anywhere, ever. read more

I live in Switzerland and was visiting my daughter in Menlo Park about 5 weeks ago. Bought a great Wilson SIX.ONE tennis racquet at this store, along with some other goods, and got great service at the time. Took the racquet back to Switzerland and, sadly, it cracked early into my first warm-up session of the new season. Called Big 5 today, ahead of another trip to Menlo Park at the end of this month and got the same AMAZING service that everyone speaks of. Even better, the person who picked up the phone recalled EXACTLY who I was, described EXACTLY what I had bought ... he then passed me over to his manager, who confidently explained how she would do me the favor and hunt down the credit card bill (I no longer have the original receipt!), arrange for her team to be aware of my upcoming visit, and assured me we'd find a solution: a replacement, credit etc. Another great reminder of the outstanding difference that OUTSTANDING PEOPLE make. Much appreciated! I look forward to my next trip and will most likely enjoy spending more time at the store to purchase more stuff on top of getting a replacement racquet. They have a very limited selection of anything. Lousy! It has gotten worse and worse. Shoes, clothing, equipment, I won't return.

I really like this place. It doesn't seem like as many people go here as some of the other busier Big 5s, like say the one on Stevens Creek. Which means that when there are sales there is always more selection/surplus here then some of the other stores. Extraordinary selection, with constant sales of heavily-discounted items. I routinely find excellent deals on shoes, sleeping bags, etc. Customer service is generally very good. You may occasionally have to hunt for an employee, but they are very helpful otherwise. Good store representing a great company. read more

Two stars at best. I bought a piece of workout equipment here. I brought it home and realized it was faulty - grooves on the pieces did not align so the piece could not be assembled. I brought it in and was treated like there was nothing wrong with the equipment, even though the saleperson could not assemble it himself. He made me feel like they were doing me a favor by letting me return it. I promptly went to another store, bought the same item for ten bucks less, and it assembled beautifully. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but this little store has IT ALL. We have bought countless sports shoes (usually marked down), knee pads, balls, athletic wear, ski clothes, ball pumps, camping gear. ..you name it. We probably go in there once a month on average, and someone at the front always greets us and instantly directs us to the location of our item. There is always a good selection (more than one brand/type to choose from) and we walk out with what we need. So refreshing after walking aimlessly around Sports Authority where no one makes eye contact with you and the racks have limited sizes/colors. read more

My DH purchased a ladder golf, corn hole set approx. 1 month ago. The product cost was $50. After very little use, stored outside but in a covered patio, the thing fell apart. I went to the store with the intention of alerting their buyer that the product was of poor quality...that they ought to stop selling it. I did not have a receipt and was not expecting a refund. As I was in line, an older gentleman behind the counter yelled at me "if you don't have a receipt, we can't do anything for you." It was incredibly rude. I tried to tell him that I only wanted to show them how bad the product and that they shouldn't sell it. He would not let me get a word in and just kept repeating that if I don't have receipt, he can't do anything. Ugh! It was such a poor customer service exchange. It's too bad. I try to buy local (vs. ordering on Amazon), but they lost me as a customer for life. read more

My husband and I had been loyal buyers at this store ( Big 5 Sporting Goods) since our son was 4 y, now he is 13; I went there to get for him some shoes, I experienced a truly horrible customer service , my son felt so intimidate for the associate actitud that he urge me to buy the shoes( bigger than his size) and run away from there . When I tried to talk with a man that looked like a supervisor he was smiling cinical and didn't let me talk, insisting they have the best employee. They just lost a lifetime client..... read more

I don't go to this store often, but a recent experience is prompting me to write this review. We bought a huge yellow balance ball there about 2 years ago. It had a pinhole leak from the moment we bought it, but we didn't go back to return it for... 1.5 years. The receipt had been in the windowsill so long that it faded and wasn't legible, so I had thrown it out. My husband got a wild hair one day and decided we should take it back. We went to the store and the owner was there. As (I) expected, he said he couldn't take back merchandise that late after the purchase date, without receipt, didn't know whether we'd punctured it ourselves with use, etc.... My husband insisted, and after some heated discussion, the owner agreed to exchange it for us. I was embarrassed we hadn't taken it back sooner, thinking the manufacturer would have eaten the cost if we returned it sooner but the retail store probably would eat it since it was so late... not sure about this. In the end, we have a working balance ball and feel we were made whole by Big 5, which was, in my opinion, a way better outcome than we would have gotten at most retailers. read more
