As part of our family trip "out west", I promised my kids a bike ride in the most beautiful surroundings...Crested Butte! We checked reviews and decided on Big Al's. The was a minor snafu on our part but the good people at Big Al's went out if their way for us. We ended up with a tough but beautiful ride...one that we all will remember. Thanks Big Al's!

Super friendly staff, gave us detailed trail knowledge, and worked diligently to help locate the exact piece of equipment we needed to get back to riding.

My first thought was that my ancient shock pump finally wore out. But both of my 26" wheels also need trueing badly so I figured I would bring it in to be tuned. When I got to the shop the first question from the guy checking me in was, do you really want to spend any money on this bike? I let him know that I didn't have the budget for a new bike this year so I just wanted to keep it on the trails a little longer. I asked if they could test one of their shock pumps on the rear suspension before sending it off for a full-rebuild from Dirt Labs which was quoted as $250 plus shipping. He assured they would look into it before dissembling it. He also said they would true the tires and rebuild the front fork as well. He said it would be ready in about 15 days and they would give me a call. 10 days later they call and say it's ready to pick up. $300 - except they couldn't true the wheels (which rub terribly) because the spokes are corroded, and they couldn't rebuild the front fork. So just got a 15 year old suspension rebuild for $300 on a bike I paid $250 for. Well I definitely wouldn't have rebuilt the rear suspension if I knew I now needed to buy new 26" wheels. Still wasn't too mad. Friend shows up to Lake City, opens the van and they gave him a 2025 Yeti. Roughly a 9k bike. Laughing and being the great guy I am, I called back and said "I think you guys made a mistake. I paid my friend $50 to bring me my bike from Gunnison, and you gave him the wrong bike." The guy on the phone started giving me attitude! He said "oh we need that back right away!" I offered to bring it back 2 days later when I had a flight out of Gunnison - citing the 3 hour round trip drive and the fact that I was working those days. Here's the kicker, finally get my bike back and the rear shock still needed air. Hooked up my shock pump and listened more closely to the air spewing out the house and watched the suspension deflate. Got a new pump, filled it right back up. I guess it's possible they looked at the rear suspension and determined it needed a rebuild. But that doesn't explain not telling me about the wheels or fork, or the joke of mixing up a $250 2009 26" and a $9000 2025 29". Won't be back. Still feeling like I got ripped off. And I still need new wheels to ride my bike.

We entered Boneshaker with only 5 minutes to spare, just browsing. They carry 2 of my favorite bikes - Cannondale + Electra - so I instantly liked their taste. We were greeted by Dave (owner) who saw our MTB shirts and asked about the race. Then a fellow patron/rider came over and we chatted about favorite trails. Really friendly folks. Anywho, next thing I know, they're putting clip-ins on a full-suspension bike for my son to demo during the pre-ride. With barely a signature and zero deposit, my son walked out *on air* 5 minutes later, excited to demo another new bike. (Back story: He rides a hard tail but loves downhill and wants full-suspension even though he races XC. Since we aren't made of $ and he's midway through his teenage growth spurt, we aren't buying 2 very expensive bikes. So he's been looking for one to serve both purposes but every bike he's demo'd has been too heavy.) The bike was 4 lbs lighter than others he demo'd and he loved it. After sleeping on it and talking to our team mechanic, we decided it would be a good fit for his needs. Dave + team gave us a pretty good deal on the bike (a 2017 Norco Optic) but it was an outgoing model (making room for 2018s) so we already knew this was the time of year to score a deal. And it was a demo. Regardless, they took care to ensure the bike was perfectly tuned for my son's size, weight, and riding needs. Two hours later, he raced it and came across the Finish with a grin even the Cheshire Cat would envy. Win-win! Bottom line: Friendly, no nonsense staff. Very knowledgeable. We'll definitely pop back in on Dave + team next time we're in BV.

We absolutely loved this experience and will probably buy a bike after having so much fun with this activity. So about this business. They are a bike shop and you can sign up for a rental to ride a nice paved trail around the historical mining areas in Leadville. They were super nice and they provide you with a helmet, a map, and give you a quick tutorial of the bike before they send you on your way. Now before you decide to ride a bike in Leadville you definitely need to be prepared for the elevation and the up hill at times, but the views , the down hills, and history made it worth it ounce of sweat. This is a MUST DO when in Leadville. No better way to get to know this laid back mountain town.

We were so thankful to be able to rent bikes last-minute on a Saturday in early June from Cycles of…read moreLife and appreciated the friendliness of the staff and their tips on where to start the Mineral Belt Trail in order to get our biggest climb completed in the first portion of our ride. This was incredibly useful information for two non-cyclist from Texas eager to get out for a joy-ride:) They also tipped us off to a store down the street, Common Threads, to purchase a lightweight backpack to carry our phones, water, and such. I found the perfect bag there for $13 AND a souvenir Colorado tube mask/scarf/hat combo which came in super handy against the heavy winds in some parts of the trail. **I learned recently that covering your ears can help prevent ear infections by preventing pollens and such from entering--makes a lot of sense! We signed waivers, paid the $25/day bike rental fee, were provided bikes, helmets, and a map and were on our way! The rental checkout and return process was quick and easy and great memories were made:) My only suggestions for improvement relate to the opportunity to sell some small, affordable, lightweight backpacks in-store (as awesome as it is to recommend neighboring businesses!) as well as the need for some bike maintenance on the rentals. My front tire was a bit low, handle grips kept slowly spinning--wouldn't stay in place, and I had some wiggling back in forth in my seat. Some of those things didn't become apparent until we were working our way over to the trail and we didn't want to delay our trip by turning back to request those things be checked or have to retrace our route as the streets were uphill and required some work. Also, it would have been super helpful to have kickstands on the bikes as we were interested in taking photos quite often along Mineral Belt Trail and found it challenging to coordinate that without kickstands. All-in-all, I would certainly recommend Cycles of Life for bike rentals (though maybe spend some time double-checking the bike before taking off) and would gladly recommend the business to friends.
