I went to Big Ben Fisheries yesterday, my first visit. The choice of fish is astonishing, and it is all so very fresh. All fish on the counter is buried in a huge quantity of ice-cubes, to assure the top quality, just as one would find in a supermarket such as Aachan in Calais.
My purchase: a large mackerel, two red mullets, and six wonderful oysters. The latter were stunning, large and full, and terrific quality (they were two for £1), better even than those sold by Waitrose. I had the oysters and mullet last night for supper, and the mackerel, still in the refrigerator, will be for tomorrow. Total cost of my purchase - £9.
I explained that I had quite a long drive home, and the guy packed the bags with copious quantities of ice cubes.
I will certainly go there again, when I am in the area.
