Captain "D" made sure we went out at a time that would maximize the experiance for the boys' first Salmon fishing trip. Good water, lots of laughs and lots of fish. We did have to release some but of course not on the Captain. So anyone upset about that would just be silly. We caught 3 keepers, 1 coho and 2 king salmon (one 15 pounder). My father in law has been fishing salmon his whole life and Captain D had just as much knowledge. He was amazing.

Captain Darrell caters to both serious fisherman and families with children who want a fun and safe day on the water. Captain Darrell came very highly recommended to me by the helpful owners of the French Creek Marina store. I was very impressed with Captain Darrell's professional and safe operation. Captain Darrell does an excellent job of monitoring the weather and water conditions. Listen to him, his main goal is to help you have the best experience possible. If he suggests that conditions are not ideal, take his advice and reschedule for later in the day or for another day. My 12-year-old son and I really enjoy bottom fishing for rockfish and lingcod. Captain Darrell did an excellent job of getting us into some real hot spots. Kids love fishing for rockfish because it gets them super involved with the equipment. Darrell is a very knowledgeable and patient teacher with children and inexperienced adults. I have now chartered with Captain Darrell several times. I find his prices are very reasonable and we've always had an awesome day on the water with him. Book early with him. He's very popular and his summer schedule fills up fast. PS - don't kid yourself, lingcod might not look like much, but those bad boys are delicious! When Captain Darrell gets through cleaning them you will never have seen such beautiful, white (with sometimes very light greenish hue), delicate flesh. I prefer over halibut.

Located in Coombs, just west of "goats on the roof", on the way to Port Alberni…read more It's actually a bunch of things all in one. An indoor free flying butterfly exhibit where the butterflies are free flying, an orchid garden, an outside garden with pond, a separate outside turtle pond, and a humming bird deck where you can watch humming birds feed. Admission is $14 adults and $5 for children. Quite reasonable. Inside is quite tropical in temperature, and if you like butterflies, this is for you. All butterflies are bred on premises. A couple of them landed on me. I tried to get a selfie but I moved too much so they flew away. Unlikely you've seen anything like this, so come and have a peek. In addition to the butterflies, there are a couple of quails and zebra finches inside the butterfliy exhibit. There's also two tortoises on premise. Have peek at them too.

They mentioned tropical birds, but the only birds I saw were a couple of quail chicks running around on the floor, in the indoor garden. They were cute, but I was confused about where the tropical birds (parrots, toucans etc) were located. We never did find them, unfortunately. Google reviews mentioned rabbits, but we didn't see any furry creatures. We saw some geckos and a tarantula in some tanks, though. There was also a turtle (although we didn't see it, he/she was hiding under their log the whole time) and a tortoise named Samson, who seemed pretty chill. We also saw a bearded dragon named Red, he was cute. We went into the snake garden, in hopes of seeing some snakes. The garden itself is really nice, but we only saw a tiny garter snake (its backside as if slithered under a bridge, probably to get away from us :p). We sat down for a few to see if any more snakes would show their faces, but none did and a couple families with small children came in, so we left. The outdoor water garden was kind of a bust. The pond was filled with tiny fish and a fake blue heron? Lol ok? The outdoor pens for tortoises were empty, and the hummingbird garden was empty, save for the cobwebs. The highlight of this place is the actual butterfly garden, hands down. The butterflies are beautiful and seem to be full of energy (dare I say they seem to have unique personalities). I didn't get any pics as none of them would sit still long enough! All in all would I go back? At this point I'm honestly not sure. Maybe? If they made a few improvements? I might revisit in the future if I ever find myself in Parksville again. But, who knows?
