Being a bit of a fussy bugger where pizzas are concerned, I wasn't exactly jumping for joy when my friend won the flip toss of where we should get food. I was hoping we'd stay in town and grab something at a certain place I love, she wanted to go to a place, order, take it back and watch a film and be comfortable and such. Big Mama's...I'd never even heard of it, but being all risqué and daring and stuff I thought sod it, I've had some dire pizzas in my life, and if worse comes to worse I'll bin it and get some beans on toast.
Thinking I was walking into a dedicated pizza place I was a bit shocked to see the menu did a healthy array of pizzas AND CURRIES too, how on earth do those two manage to marry together, and the smell coming from the place was a strange mix of pleasing and confusing. Wanting to run away I resisted the urge, and I must say I wasn't totally disappointed.
First thing I noticed was pizzas came in two thicknesses and three sizes, medium, deep, and family sized. Woop. I don't really like deep pans, but I know plenty who do. Scanning the menu I was truly disturbed at the thought of a donner meat calzone, but I got over that and ordered a medium meaty mama, plenty of meat and garlic, yum, and my friend got a deep rainbow warrior, which was some sort of vegetarian hot mess. Less than £11 for the two, and ready in about 20 minutes. Slightly on the greasy side, but they tasted not half bad. Wouldn't say they were amazing or authentic, but to fill a void it's a worthy competitor. read more
