My husband and I stayed at Big Sandy last August. We had such a great time. Natasha and Kay made great homestyle dinners each night. The Dining room is set and you eat with other campers and hikers. They even let me ring the dinner triangle to let everyone in the cabins and around the lodge know that dinner was ready. We took an eight mile, over night hike to view Bridger Wilderness. The crew does pack trips, which means they will meet you on the trail with a pack horse full of supplies. This was so helpful. We are not the most experienced of hikers, and to have this option was perfect. We also took a day long ride on horseback. They packed us a lunch, and we took a guided trail ride. It was amazing! The horses were so friendly. While I am an experienced rider, my husband had never been on a horse. They have horses for all experience levels. Wayland (his horse) was perfect for him, and Rita was perfect for me. Everything about our trip was very authentic. From the dinner triangle, to the horses. From Stan teaching us about the "Tarzan call", and the other man cracking the whip and teaching one of the other campers to do it. Each morning and night there was a wood fire in the lodge, and a relaxing place to sit and visit, or play a board game by lantern light. We had reservations for 2 nights starting Aug 12, 2026. We drove up late in the afternoon to find a 'Closed' sign on the Lodge and no other paying guests staying there. A staff person met us outside the Lodge and directed us to our cabin and the washroom and said dinner would be signaled by a bell around 6:30pm. The cabin was very rustic and there were gaps around the door and in the walls that worried us about rodent problems with our food. When I went to the washroom building there were used towels and personal items in the shower area. Strange for a place with no other guests. When I went to use the toilet I found it full of excrement that appeared to be several days old. When called for dinner, the Lodge was still dark and we made our way to a long table with only 2 places set (no greeting by staff or anyone for that matter). We followed several other people (staff? workers? people living in the area?) in line for a buffet that consisted of ground hamburger stew and bagged iceberg lettuce. Our choice of drink was from pitchers of water or lemonade. The Lodge gets rave reviews for their burgers and cold drinks (beer, etc.) that are offered to day users coming off the hiking trails. This would have been a great improvement over the 'family style' dinner provided to us. After dinner we concluded that the service was nowhere near what was advertised and paid for and that the Lodge was surely closed (as the sign clearly stated and the lack of other paying guests indicated) and decided to drive the long, rough road out of there without staying the night. Definitely not worth the $791.78 that was charged for 2 people for 2 nights. read more

Review is for the restaurant only. We stopped by for burgers and cold beer before and after our 5 day rock climbing trip in the Winds. Highly recommend stopping by this unique place for a hearty meal pre or post your adventure. Bread pudding desert was also on point. Had the best time ever! Lodge is warm and welcoming and the cabins comfortable. The staff was superb. Everyone was friendly, attentive and efficient. The meals were all delicious and the sack lunches were huge! The horses are well cared for and the property is clean and well maintained. We took an all day horse back ride to go fishing and caught plenty. The lake by the lodge has plenty of fish and kept our grandsons entertained. If you haven't been here you are missing a great time and adventure. We will be back! read more

Unlike the others that have reviewed so far, we did not come to stay but came for a meal. After 6 days on the trail, the sign that said "burger and beer" on the main road could not be ignored. Great burgers and chips, beer (Wind River Brewery), and pie (one slice of blueberry and one of strawberry balsamic that day; crust was awesome). Super courteous and great service. We planned to order and that carry our order outside to the picnic table as we had a dog with us but they provided great table service all the way. Wonderful setting by Mud Lake with the mountains in the background. Hope that more hikers and climbers discover this place as a way to celebrate the end of their trips. We will be back here next time we are I the area. read more

This review is about the restaurant associated with the Lodge, not about the accommodations offered at the several small cabins. Also, I ate there after a 7-day backpacking trip, and some allowance should be granted for that -- the first "real" meal after a week of backpacking food generally tastes great. First, the in-the-door ambience was just fantastic: log cabin, rock fireplace, a section for diners and another section for relaxing lodgers, a mix of a few small tables with a couple of long tables that allow for intermingling of diners. There were also tables set outside under some trees a short distance away. An old (dead) stove in the corner with pitchers of water for thirsty hikers -- us! Nice art/photos on the walls. My burger was maybe the best I ever had. I had the Bear Mace Burger. I'm guessing that it was a half-pound, oozing cream cheese, Swiss cheese, a sauce, and with crisp lettuce and tomato. It was sublime. I added a tall can of Wind River brewery beer. Admittedly, there were some negatives that combine to knock off a star. (1) the water was room temperature, and the beer wasn't very cold either. What, no ice? No refrigeration? (2) The side was potato chips, probably emptied out of a lunch-sized bag -- perhaps for that price I could get something more substantial and imaginative (and desirable), maybe a bowl of apple sauce or, better, an apple or a banana. (3) And the wait time was awfully long even in a non-fast food restaurant -- I chalked that up, and the tall prices, to a small staff operating in an out-of-the-way area and it didn't bother me too much. We waited so long that the other guys started finding flaws (the lights weren't on so the person at the counter had to use her cell phone to show us the menu), the restroom was after a walk outside) that didn't bother me. Wonderful people! My backpacking buddy and I decided to pay to stay here and ship them a resupply for free. Great email correspondence about shipping the resupply! Snowfields and the messed up signage for "Mud Lake" put us hours behind schedule. Dinner was at 6:00 pm and we didn't walk in until just before 9:00. What a relief to see that dinner was being kept warm on the stove and a pitcher of homemade lemonade was waiting for us! Breakfast was awesome! Wonderful people and great showers! A word of warning though. There is no electricity and no electric outlets are available. So don't expect to recharge your electronics. read more

I was here in June, and was the first guest of the season. At this time there was no dinner service nor breakfast and the main lodge was not open yet. I spent most of the time exploring and climbing the Winds using the cabin as a base camp. The owners are extremely courteous and down to earth. The bathrooms were working with running water and being the only ones there did not have to share with other guests. The only downside was the day I arrived was the beginning of the mosquito hatch, they are everywhere in this part of the Winds, although made for good fishing. I would highly recommend this place, but be aware that the accommodations are not like a hotel, this is more like a hunting cabin. Lets keep the Winds wild! read more

Big Sandy Lodge is off the beaten track. From any main road it is over an hour's drive through gravel then dirt roads. Do not let that scare you, the roads are very well marked and easy to travel, even in a rental mini van. On arrival to Big Sandy Lodge we were greeted by manager Sara who keeps a roaring fire going in the wonderful stone fireplace of the main lodge. This is where you have your meals, served family style. Homestyle cooking, warm and good. Friendly atmosphere to share with other guests or the lodge workers. The cabins are log construction, set in a semi circle near the lodge. No electricity, heated by wood stove (plenty of wood provided), lighted by kerosene lamp. A bath house with hot showers just a few steps away. Close by there are several options for good hiking. We hiked to Big Sandy Lake, a beautiful destination as well as lots to enjoy along the way. We had a great 2 night stay here. It is a great option to camping. It's nice to have a home cooked meal, a warm fire, a hot shower, and a comfortable bed after a day of hiking or fishing. Though the experience is not for everyone, I highly recommend it to the adventurous outdoors person as a way to experience all the beauty of nature and (most of) the comforts of home. read more
