The selection is really good here, especially at the deli where you can get roast chickens and spareribs that are already prepared. Of course, because of the extended hours of this particular store, it can get hectic on weekends, especially on Sundays, since most other Billa stores in the country are not open. But it's very convenient for me, not only because of the hours but also because I can always drop by on the way home from work.

I have to say this is one of the better places in Vienna to shop, if you can put of with the HUGE…read moreamount of people that go there. It is open until 21:00 every night and open on Sundays. Even though their isle, are bigger than normal for inside Vienna, it is still very crowded there ALL THE TIME, as clearly people like to and need to shop after normal shopping hours in Vienna. But i would recommend to stay away from there on Sundays, as you WILL WAIT for 20 to 40 minutes to pay for your food.

Had to review at least one Eurospar while visiting Austria…read more Eurospar is the mid-size store of the "Spar" variations, and this one was also mid-level in cleanliness and stock. It wasn't as clean as some other Eurospars I stopped into, but it wasn't the worst. I love the containers of fresh bread and pastries you can grab and go. Lots of fresh produce and good optima for dairy and cold groceries. Also tried a kombucha from here and really enjoyed it.

Merkur is the most "American-ish" grocery store I've been to in Vienna, and that's mostly a good…read morething. It's big, which means it has many different items in stock, and many different varieties and brands from which to choose. It has a bakery and a deli and, perhaps most importantly for me, it has ground turkey. (Austria apparently has interesting laws re: machines and poultry and red meat, such that very, very few places sell ground poultry, but Merkur happens to be one of them. I am actually regretting writing this because when Merkur actually has ground turkey in stock, we buy like all of it and freeze it...) Continuing. Merkur also has a large produce department, and although they have a wide variety of produce available, I find that it's not necessarily as fresh as at the Billa where I normally shop (on Neubaugasse). And it's usually more expensive. That's the last thing about Merkur. It's more expensive.. I used to shop here almost exclusively, but since I can get most of my "bio" (organic) brands and produce at Billa for cheaper (or at a market for WAY cheaper), I don't really need to shop at Merkur. Nevertheless, I'm really glad this place exists - for the ground turkey, for the large wine and beer selection, for the party supply selection, and for their delis.. They have a deli and cafe that are outside of the store itself, and the food there tends to be pretty good. I had some pesto ravioli ages ago; it was decent and easy - I could eat it there, and we didn't have to cook that night! Plus, there's a kind-of cobbler located in the Merkur (random, I know) - he resoles shoes, and makes keys. Yeah.. interesting, but convenient (I had a pair of boots resoled when I first moved here, to have better traction when walking in the snow..)

They carry ingredients from around the world--various parts of Asia, Africa, India, Mexico, South…read moreAmerica, Thailand, Japan, etc. etc. You can buy the essentials here to make a huge number of dishes from different cuisines. I never expected to be able to cook up a big pot of berbere lentils with ingredients from the corner grocery store in Vienna (no offense, Vienna, but last time I was here I didn't find international ingredients quite so easily). Ignore the review from the weird Scottish lady below. The cashier was very friendly, not at all "nasty." (??) Also he fist-bumps his regular customers. It's a charming neighborhood vibe in there. Note: next week they're having a big international food, dance, and music festival outside the grocery store. How cool is that? What other groceries do you know that host festivals? Hofer? Aldi? Billa? Nein.

I especially like getting different hot sauces there from South Africa and Thailand, or spice packets and sauce mixes from the Philippines. The idea is to reduce the amount of packaging waste, which I wholeheartedly support and am happy to be able to do here in Vienna. I often go here to get spices, pasta, and rice. They have a wide variety and are decently priced. The fruits and vegetables they offer are also always fresh and I love that I can buy just what I need. Since I'm cooking for just myself, things often go bad before I can use them if I buy at a regular grocery store. And they don't look at you funny if you buy just two carrots, an apple and three potatoes. Also they try to keep everything local, even the jam and other non-perishable products they have. You can also stop into Lunzners for a coffee and cake or even a small meal. The desserts are always delicious and make you feel good for eating them! All in all this is a lovely little place. It reminds me of my local coop back in Minneapolis and I was absolutely thrilled to find Luzners!
