Ever the open minded traveller (and food lover) when I found out that I would be visiting the Wildebeest Arms a local popular gastropub run by a top local chef, I was excited! My excitement extended to elation when I learned that instead of Sunday brunch, Britts tend to enjoy something called Sunday Lunch, which is served in the early afternoon and most typically involves you consuming the traditional meal of roast beef with Yorkshire pudding - OMG! So take it from this Canadian, back home - in Toronto, there are a lot of places that offer a Roast Beef dinner, specifically Irish/English pubs, and you know what - they do alright by the tradition, but, more often than not, you're getting something overcooked and just missing a soul. I've never had authentic British cuisine before, and say what you want about it... but it's hearty, it's seasonal, it's delicious and just feels good! The Roast dinner/lunch special was about 20GBP if memory serves so in CAD $ that's about $35. Everything was incredibly tasty and cooked perfectly, however, some members of our party noted that sections of their beef was a touch over cooked. On the other hand, my order was perfection, my only complaint - and maybe it's the glutton in me, but the serving I received was much smaller than that of others at the table. I was a tad disappointed about this since it was the part of the meal I enjoyed the most. The size of my meat (pause for a laugh) aside, the entire meal including the YSP (Yorkshire puds), the potatoes and root veggies were all on point and cooked masterfully! I was feeling peckish still at the conclusion of my meal and somehow got talked into ordering another UK seasonal favourite for dessert - Sticky Toffee Pudding. OMG x2, this cake is basically like a piece of dessert concrete and if I had about 25% room left before, I was properly 45% over capacity following my consumption if it. But so worth every sinful bite, especially the to die for caramel sauce the whole dish sat in.. nom nom nom nom. So when it came for a dinner without the rest of the team, my colleague and I walked here. We knew the instant we saw the place that it was going to be a great meal. Linen tablecloths, sparkling silverware, wine and water glasses on the table, professional looking wait staff. We went in and while we were asked if we had a reservation, they were able to fit us in. I'd recommend that you do make a reservation as they limit the number of seatings to ensure good service. Starters. I had a fabulous delicious stuffed red pepper. My colleague enjoyed the beetroot and orange cured salmon. Nicely plated, perfectly prepared, I was sad to see them go. That is, until the mains arrived. I had ordered a the sirloin steak, which was a 10 or so ounce piece of perfect medium-rare on top of new potatoes, beans and mushrooms. If it weren't impolite, I would have licked the plate. My colleague's grilled tuna looked divine. Dessert was a vanilla bavois (sort of like triffle or gelatin, but... different) with roasted peaches was excellent. The cheese plate looked good, with grapes and sliced apple. A fantastic wine selection as well as bottled beers and Bitburger on draft complimented our choices. Service and timing was good without rushing us or being over-attentive. The total was a bit high, but it was a great meal and a great value. Two starters, two mains, a beer, three glasses of excellent wine. All told, £65.

Would not have expected this in a small village. The menu stated that if required gluten and dairy free options for most of the dishes are available. The place is quite spacious with several different seating areas, including a really nice winter garden and outdoor patio. We liked everything - so much so that we promptly went back for breakfast the next morning. Highly recommended! PS: We didn't stay there but you could - there are 35 rooms.

A beautiful building with a fascinating history. Now a restaurant, The Old Siege House is so-called…read moredue to being the very same building in which the Siege of Colchester took place, the siege which brought an end to the English Civil War in the 17th century. Bullet holes and other partial damage is still visible outside and inside of this restaurant from that siege. But the building is even older than that event, it was constructed late on in the 15th century and still retains nearly all of it's original features including stained glass windows and fireplaces. And as if being inside a building of historical significance wasn't enough, the food is bloomin' marvellous, too. The menu is generally made up of modern European style options but what gives The Old Siege House some bonus points is the imagination and creativity put in to the meals created here. The presentation is great and the taste is even better. After some generously sized starters I was struggling to decide which one of the five or so meal choices, which I had narrowed down to, to choose from. This was a problem I'd be only to happy to take on again. In the end, I went for the Tournedo of Pheasant (pan fried pheasant stacked with red onion marmalade, smoked apple wood cheddar and prosciutto with butternut squash mash and veal jus) - oh yeah, that's how I roll. This wasn't a choice I regret. Lovely. My lady-friend's veg-tastic meal was also terrific - the Asparagus Florentine (grilled asparagus, spinach, toasted brioche and poached duck egg smothered with smoked apple wood cheddar sauce). We both loved this. My dessert of profiteroles smothered in white chocolate with vanilla ice-cream and the lady's créme brulee of strawberry and basil with shortbread, both hit the spot. Although no one was playing while we were there on a Sunday evening, there is a beautiful Grand piano by the entrance in the bar area. The layout of The Old Siege House makes it possible to accommodate some larger tables for groups but, also, a lot of smaller, secluded tables while keeping much of the floor open. No one need sit practically adjoining the next table, there is enough room in between for your own privacy. It was a reasonably quiet evening in the restaurant so service was expected to be quick and it was. It was also friendly, courteous, efficient and knowledgable (on the wine list, soup of the day, specials, history of the building etc). When we finished our drink we went inside to pay and I asked her if it was possible if we could have the exact same balcony table, she replied not necessarily the same table, at this point an older man from behind the bar commented "we cannot guarantee a balcony table at all" we looked at the waitress and said "Oh, we thought you confirmed a balcony table" she looked at the man who then commented "no, I have allocated them downstairs" we responded to the waitress that we particularly wanted a balcony table therefore any availability for the following evening, she looked and confirmed availability when the man (barman/manager?) said 'No, I told you we cannot guarantee balcony tables, I allocate on the day, therefore will decide tomorrow, do you want a booking or not" I asked why he was being so rude, my husband then said we just want to pay and leave, at this point he became verbally aggressive and told us to get out, my husband said to the embarrassed waitress please just take the payment we want to leave, the man just repeated "get out I do not want your money, get out and do not come back". We have absolutely no idea what triggered his shocking behaviour towards us as we were just trying to make a reservation. Fortunately we do not encounter this type of aggression usually and went on to have a very lovely Birthday dinner in Brown's, excellent food, good ambience and friendly staff.

I am not entirely sure what to make of this restaurant as I have ordered the absolutely stunning…read moresharing platters many times now and always thoroughly enjoyed myself, whilst another time I ordered the chicken option and was met with an exceedingly dry half-chicken and clearly store-bought coleslaw, whereas my father ordered a superior belly pork option but was also disappointed by an unforgivably poor portion size. This being said the establishment is a very pleasant place to be, the garden area is lovely, there are nice drinks on offer at the bar and the safe are all very accommodating. As I said I would seriously recommend the sharing platters if you drop by, in particular the seafood option.
