Live music, a good selection of keg and bottled beers and a fantastic vibe. Exactly what you need to get your weekend off to a bang. I love the old shipping container that takes up one side of the bar to lower the ceiling over the sofas, a really good touch and very much in keeping with the style, as is the chain link fencing that covers the semi open front/veranda (which has sadly ceased to be the smoking area which is now the tables on the street). Expect to see people from all walks of life, dressed in jeans or up to the nines. And only here for a good time. Happy times, glad to recommend.

As everyone in the city does does I've had a fair few late nights out in Newcastle, and while most of my friends prefer Aspers Casino as their after hours port of call that's just not my sorta scene... as luck would have it I happened upon this place once leaving the casino so we thought "what the heck" and popped in for the ever popular "just one more" that we all trick ourselves into having. Now don't get me wrong, this place is practically a dive bar... you won't get amazing cocktails here, but they've got snooker/pool, all the staples of a standard bar, a cheap to use jukebox, and glorious fried food served until 5am... I'm talking about near US style fried goodness, not the almost microwaved version that you often get at Friday's, etc., here in the UK. (I don't even like fried food, but at 3am after drinking all night I'll practically lick the floor for a good jalapeño popper compared to other options at that hour.) The atmosphere is where it wins for me... I've been several times in the wee hours of the morning (aka night before) and it's really laid back... never too over the top or boisterous that time of night, so it's almost like a hidden gem for someone like me who just wants to hang out a bit longer. As with the casino, I don't even play pool, but I always have a better time hanging with friends here... it's just more engaging and I get to play with the jukebox so it's a win / win in my book. Last note, they do some type of membership thing.... after a certain time (midnight maybe?) so you may only be able to get in if you have a card... it's cheap however, and one gets many in, but it's something to be aware of. (Didn't even know about it the first few visits, I think they only really enforce it on a night the crazies try and get in to be honest... along those lines there's a "buzz in" door at the top of the stairs, I can only imagine how handy that comes in at the right time.) If the above doesn't sound appealing then it certainly won't be five stars for you... it may be the exact opposite to be honest, but for me it was an amazing late night escape in the glorious madness that is Newcastle. If you're even slightly intrigued I would give it a go, it couldn't hurt, and our initial drop in from curiosity was enough to keep us coming back.

Let me start off by saying that this place is actually kinda dirty. It's like a big dive bar, but that's what is so great. No nonsense, all business. There are 2 floors, but 3 themed rooms (including 1 VIP). So if you don't like the music in one spot, just move. There is always a varied crowd, but it seemed as though the geordies tended to come here more than the more upscale places. No complaints on my end. On Wednesdays, they (used to?) have specials for athletes. Not only that, but they had £1.50 double vodka lemonade. CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT!!!!11!!1eleven!!! I would subsequently time travel to class on Thursday morning. Anyways, this place is great. For a one-night out in Newcastle, I can't say I would recommend this place. But if you have a good group of friends and just want to have fun, there's no reason not to come here.

The Botanist was an excellent find when we stayed the night in downtown Newcastle. Located on Monument Mall, you have to up three flights of stairs or take the lift (elevator) to reach the main bar and lounge that has a strong botanical garden theme that is quite beautiful, especially with the location being under a dome. The dome is gorgeous and really enhances the botanical garden and atrium effect. The cocktails are very good as well. I ordered a buttered coconut old fashioned that was quite rich and creamy, but very satisfying with the toasted coconut and butter-washed Makers Mark bourbon with homemade salted honey syrup. My wife enjoyed her Botanist Ultimate Gin & Tonic as we took a table with these plushy lounge chairs. The bartender was fantastic and friendly in making us the cocktails. Really nice guy who made us feel at home. Additionally, they have a rooftop balcony to enjoy the drinks; however, on this evening, it was windy and cold (at least for us Floridians) to where we decided to stay warmer inside. But we would return in a heartbeat.

We went in quite late on a Saturday night for a couple of drinks and were happy to find an array of gin on the menu as well as an impressive cocktail list. It was relatively quiet but there aren't a lot of tables or seats so only got a table when some people left. The tables are chalk boards and provided a fair amount of entertainment during our drinks. I would definitely go here again if I'm near Central for a drink or two. A nice casual atmosphere and a great location adds to the plus points.

It's evident that this change in Menu is a financial decision. The steaks are still there, but Steak Night is not 'every night' as previous and is now limited to one night. Similarly, the limited Menu choice has been carefully chosen, and not always for the better. For example, we often had the black pudding Starter, which came with scallops and a fresh salad; it now consists of one round of black pudding wrapped in half a streaky rasher of bacon on onion gravy. The salmon dish consisted one time of a thick fillet, served on ribbon vegetables, with a sauce containing prawns. It now consists of a much thinner steak, on a small bed of spring greens, one scoop of potato and a smoked garlic tablespoon of sauce. (£9.95) Hubby's sausages were advertised as being 3 different types, but they all looked and tasted exactly the same and I've tasted better in the Fine Range in Supermarkets. I haven't yet tried a steak since the Menu change, but I'm guessing that they won't be as big or as good quality based on the dishes we tried. I did note that the sides to the steak are now no longer onion rings and chips and mushrooms as before. There also seems to have been a cut down in staff. We waited over half an hour between our Starter and Main as staff rushed to cope with the patrons at the bar and the restaurant. It is a nice bar and eatery. The bar has a colourful history which continues to be colourful to this day. At one point, the Police closed it down - and with good reason. The Eagle is the kind of bar you would only go into by accident, unless you are the kind of Patron who takes their drinking very seriously indeed. If your car was to breakdown outside The Eagle, it would be safer to walk the lonely streets to find a telephone. Ive been in The Eagle once out of necessity and once is enough for anybody.

However, while walking down Gateshead I happened to notice the other bars on the block, that had a lot of rainbow flags, male and female symbols over the door frames. Before we walked in I was positive it was a gay bar. My boyfriend refused to believe me so in we walked. It is a dark, dark bar. Oddly enough, the decor was filled with everything of 'old western America'. Wagon wheels, tons of eagles all mixed with clever sayings about who frequented the establishment. The bartender asked us if we were for a couple, announcing that yes, we were in a gay bar. A great red glow covered the booths, while other corners appeared to be dimly lit. My boyfriend, so excited to take me there, only to be disappointed that he was the object of everyone's attentions. (I rather enjoyed it) The staff is very friendly, we still felt welcome as a couple. They even had mini bottles of Budweiser beer that I'd never seen before. We stayed for pint, enjoying the surroundings. It's not your over the top gay bar, but rather low key. They had a downstairs area but we didn't want to intrude. Perhaps they only expect men to come in for a pint but I didn't feel too out of place. It gave us a great story for my first visit to Northern England.
