My mom needed a little pick-me-up so I took her to breakfast at Billy's Cafe (I think it used to be Billie J's cafe?) It seemed like a good choice because although I like places like First Watch, Jimmy's Egg, and LePeep, Billy's has less of a corporate feel and more of an old school, small town, personal vibe. We snagged a booth and our experienced, no-nonsense server brought coffees right away. The menu has loads of very traditional breakfast and lunch options at reasonable prices (especially these days!). I opted for the Billy's combo with biscuits & gravy, hashbrowns, eggs over easy and sausage links. My mom got the Build-a-Breakfast with scrambled eggs, sausage patty, and pancakes. For $20 and change, two people can eat like kings. I really didn't need much the rest of the day. Though I'll never make it there before dawn, they do offer an early bird breakfast special before 8am on weekdays for $5.95. I really need to come here more often, especially since it's right in my neighborhood. I have had a craving for chicken fried steak lately ...

Billy's was crowded when we walked in (8:00am)-- we sat at the only table available, but by 8:30 a lot of tables had cleared out. This could be due to the early bird special that they have from 6:00-8:00. The restaurant is your typical breakfast diner, and it appeared to be very clean. Just remember it's cash only! The service was great. I think we see the same waitress every time we come. She was quick, knowledgeable, and very friendly with her tables. My companion and I both ordered Build-a-breakfasts, which come with eggs, toast, and hash browns. He added bacon to his while I added the chicken fried steak with gravy. The hash browns were a bit greasy, but they still remained crispy on top, and we devoured them so we clearly didn't mind. The chicken fried steak was more than filling, and the amount of gravy was very generous.

Visiting my father in Omaha, and he wanted to bring us to Billy J's Cafe, 'one of his favorite plaves to eat'. This restaurant only serves breakfast and lunch. The food portions are large, and very good. It was quite busy when we were there, but the servers did a pretty good job with keeping up. My dad brought me to Billy J's when I visited him last year, and the front door had a large crack. I was surprised to see that it still hadn't been fixed (seems like a significant safety hazard)

Bright cheery service but the food is ok. Canned biscuits and white gravy with no sausage. Decent hash browns. Like others have said, good prices but nothing special in relation to food. Tip: no credit cards. ATM on site.

Solid eggs, bacon and toast! The hashbrowns are prepared perfectly and very close to Leavenworth Café but unseasoned. Dump your own salt on and it works. Biscuits and gravy were good but pretty light on the sausage. Prices are right And service is super friendly will definitely be back!

Billy's Cafe was everything I expected based on previous reviews. It was pretty busy late morning on a Sunday. There is no hosting so it's pretty much the honor system on seating yourself when a table leaves. The busser left a wrinkled roll of silverware left from the previous diners which was slightly odd. Otherwise service was quick and to the point. I had the chicken fried steak with hash browns, eggs, and pancakes. The hash browns were perfect. Crispy on the outside warm and soft on the inside. Chicken fried steak was pretty good. Nice crust but could've used more seasoning. The pancakes were also delicious. They come pre-buttered so if you're not into that let me know! One odd thing was the syrup labeled that it was made just for Billy's. Super thin...just kind of wondering who is specially making this syrup. I guess you can find the same at their other locations around town. I would also appreciate a better selection of hot sauces. The sauce they have is a Louisiana style and it's honestly not very good. Over it was a good experience and I will definitely return. The hash browns alone have me sold!

DP ordered Lemon Berry Pancakes, a plate-filing short stack of goodness. I'd like to say it tasted as good as it looked, but I couldn't tell as DP chowed down like a hound from hell. In a good way, of course. She did allow me to share her Maple Braised Bacon (meaning that I was able to snatch a piece while she wasn't looking). Really, really fine, something I'd definitely order again. For me. Not to share. I had the Schnitzel Bennie with tart cherry jam and lemon hollandaise. Sound unusual? Tasted great! My only gripe was that the pork cutlet was a bit small and could have used a bit more seasoning in the breading. Would I order it again? You betcha! Service was fast and efficient. The decor was quirky and inviting but the space was loud enough that it was really hard to carry a conversation. Overall rating: yahoo!

We said first available seats, which ended up being at the end of the bar. More about that later... I ordered the vegan standard and hubs ordered the banana bread French toast. The server was friendly and the food came out in a timely manner, considering the place was packed. Regarding the vegan standard, it seems they have cut back on the amount of tofu scramble and increased the amount of hashbrowns, which was a little bit disappointing. As usual it was very tasty though! I tried a bite of the hubs French toast and it was VERY unique and tasty! II will be getting that next time. I was disappointed to hear that they haven't brought back the vegan biscuits and gravy, but maybe once again they will! So the food was great but our experience, not so much, based on where we were sitting. I feel like they should not even use the last spot at the bar to seat a patron. Right next to where I was sitting is the place they bring the clean silverware to dry it off, then they would toss it into the silverware holder. The noise was very annoying and they did nothing to try to even be quiet about it. The other thing about that location is the register is pretty much right in your face, like 15 inches directly in front of me and someone was pretty much there the whole time. Other areas of the bar wouldn't be quite so bad, but next time we will wait longer to get a table or sit at the bar top that looks outside instead of at all the workers doing their thing and talking to each other. Other than the location of where we sat this visit, this is still one of our top spots for a yummy vegan breakfast, and we will be back!

My husband is a much harsher critic than I am, and he gave it a "rare 5.5 out of 5." The pancakes were some of the fluffiest I've ever had. They also have a great selection of coffee flavors to choose from, which was a fun bonus. The coffee paired perfectly with breakfast, though I probably wouldn't come here just for the coffee alone. The flavor was good but it did have a slight burnt taste. A quick note: you order at the counter before sitting down. It's a mix of self-serve and sit-down service. You order at the counter, grab your own silverware, and seat yourself, but they bring your food and drinks out to you (other than water). I do wish they were a bit more attentive about clearing finished plates during the meal. The restaurant was so busy that the line was out the door when we arrived, but it moved surprisingly fast. I was worried we wouldn't find a table, yet there were plenty of open seats available. The atmosphere is also really nice and cozy, making it a great spot to start your day.

Ok the other hand, the service is rather iffy & unpredictable. The chicken & waffles is my go-to for each visit, and they have many types of delicious sides to choose from, with my favorites being the biscuits & berries, goat cheese grits, and also the fried green tomatoes. I have zero problems with the food that they serve here, they always do an excellent job at preparing whatever they need to prepare & the portions are always satisfactory. As for the service, there are days where you will receive perfect service while on others the service is not so great. Some days you will be attended to in a timely manner, while there is other days where there isn't anyone available or willing to seat you somewhere. I've also experienced instances where they didn't attend to our table to take orders until I made a complaint. Most of these instances were during days where the place was virtually empty so it's not because of the place being busy. I've also ordered take out from here before, again some instances are perfect and there's other instances where they don't tell you if a certain food is out of stock via text or call so if you ordered something that isn't in stock, you're forced to wait for them to prepare something else once you arrive to pick up your order. They also don't always include syrup or butter in the takeout bags for chicken & waffles. One minor thing I'm also disappointed about is how the portion of grits has lessened over time, going from being served in a bowl to instead being served in a small cup/mug. Overall, I certainly don't return for the service because you never really know if it's going to be a good day or a bad day for that. It's always the food that brings me back. I do want to like this place, and I do to an extent but again the service is always unpredictable. I'd still say the food is worth coming here to see how it goes.

The dinner service manager is knowledgeable and passionate about the dining experience. When we ordered the radicchio salad, I was skeptical that it would be bitter, but was curious to try it. They were fairly busy, and honestly our food took a bit to come out, but I am still giving a five due to the overall experience and quality of service. Our server Melannie was fantastic and always present. We did the bottomless mimosa deal (3 out of 4 of us) and she was always coming around asking us what flavor we wanted next when our current was still half full to make sure we got our moneys worth. The champagne might not be the fanciest, but for $20 bottomless mimosas I'll take it. They have fun flavors in addition to the basic ones like strawberry, mango, etc. which adds an element of fun. For food--there were several things I was eyeballing but landed on the spicy chorizo Benny. It was really good, eggs cooked perfect, and came with hashbrowns. Another at our table got the poutine which also looked yummy. I'd say the food portion could have included a bread/toast option, however If brunching in Omaha i'd return to try several things on the menu. The vibe inside is chill, would be more fun sitting outside once the weather warms up. Since I was the one that booked the reservation, the tab got a bit confusing. At first they were taking it off my total, then the server said that hold would come off so I paid for my meal/drinks there. I did end up getting double charged (for both the reservation hold and my meal) which was cleared up with a quick phone call to their establishment---apparently it is a new process they are trying. I do understand though why they wouldn't want to just deduct the hold as then people that don't know how to tip wouldn't tip on the total, which hurts the server. All was cleared up regarding this mishap though so no complaints.

Ambiance: It was a nice regular refreshing bar/brunch spot. But safety was a HUGE issue which is where I'll get to my point of this low rating. Service: Is negative zero a thing? That goes to the owner... the 1 star is for the decent service my server attended towards me. In unfortunate events it's not the servers fault.. but overall with the owner coming out, couldnt be anymore careless.. The Cause: Either the owner or a staff employee whomever that is responsible for setting up the patio umbrellas, and I mean those large heavy metal patio umbrellas, well, they failed to lock the pole of the umbrella and unfortunately the umbrella lifted and blew away and had hit a family in the face that were dining there also; instant noticeable bruising to the face... I was only a table away from them.. it could have been me too. I am disappointed in the lack of care in general that surrounded the scene. Little 5 ft me... was the only one that came to help while everyone else sat around and minded their own business... it took a long while until one of the staff noticed to help and then the owner came out and awkwardly said a one word-sorry and dipped... didnt come back to offer any hospitality, non-genuine and non-apologetic... it made me lose my appetite. They had the audacity to still charge the family their meal... but I had to tell these really nice folks to make sure they get comped back. It was sickening to me on how careless they were treated. I would never come back! I mean an exaggerating long wait, cold soggy food and careless hospitality from the owner himself. That's three major strikes. P.s. That same wknd.. the news showed up about a South Carolina woman that was struck by a patio umbrella and died on site... that says alot about lacking safety. Yes, search it up. It's real news.. Hope this help improves the business alertness. P.p.s. And although I was disappointed at this dining-bar overall... I still tipped my server a good $20 as the situation was out of their control, my server was still attentive towards me. They all just need social common courtesy in empathy and hospitality. But anyways, my lunch ended with bittersweetness with the family that got struck, they comped my whole meal for genuinely being the only one that was concerned for them. The only service I'm grateful for was that.
