Overdue review for Bird Rock Coffee in La Jolla. Regardless of the time of day, this cafe always seems to have a line of people waiting...yes the coffee is that good, it's strong and some of the creations are great. My favs are the Left Coast Latte and the Sandpiper, which was formerly called the Trophy wife..lol I don't know the story behind that but I have my own story and that's what my late exHub would endearingly call me ;) Most of the staff here for the most part are nice and helpful. I've noticed the staff to be very young not informed about things in general because after a little chit chat, some don't have exposure to luxe things and brands, otherwise Fendi wouldn't be misspelled as Fendy lol To the right side of the coffee making area is the seating area room, where the walls are filled with art paintings for sale from various people. The space itself is not flattering, it resembles a surfer dude's dorm room, kind of messy, some distressed furnishings yet a tad cool but every seat is always occupied with either students or people on their laptop. There are a couple of benches outside that are also usually occupied too. If you live in the area, this cafe is like a magnet to congregate and mingle with old friends or new ones... and that's the best vibe this place offers. I stopped in today to grab a quick latte before a meeting. I opted for the Honey B - with cinnamon and honey & I asked for nonfat milk. The wifi was down & because the printer was not able to print out the labels with customer names on them, and a few other folks had also ordered the Honey B, there was a bit of "whose drink is this?" confusion. After about 10 long minutes, my latte was up and I added more cinnamon to it and left for work. The latte leans sweet due to the honey, but it was pleasant enough. I think I'd add another shot of espresso if I were ever to get this again because I could barely taste it, but at $7.25 it is already a little pricey. Customer service was fine. The place is cute, welcoming, and open, and very close to the ocean. Lots of parking on the street, but it can get dicey to find it during busy times. read more

Ever since Philz fell off, I have been looking for a new, reliable coffee chain. Bird Rock seems to be that chain. I dropped by after a weekend workout class and the cafe was bustling as always. The line moved quicker than expected, given how few workers there were. Despite the crowded appearance, there was definitely indoor and outdoor seating. I ordered a small, iced vanilla latte with oat milk. I love that oat milk does not cost extra! I also love that they are very intentional about the beans they use, and how they obtain them. They are currently doing a strawberry special, including strawberry rhubarb matcha and strawberry rhubarb sparkling tea. My drink came out quickly and I really liked it overall. Prices are comparable to other "nicer" coffee places. Personally, if the coffee quality is not great, oat milk enhances the deficiencies. However, I was not feeling lactose that day so decided to take that risk, and it paid off in a major way. I am no coffee connoisseur but I could appreciate that the coffee in my drink was so smooth and velvety with a faint vanilla flavor. Let me start by saying that I'm a big fan of Bird Rock and a regular client at their downtown location. I stopped here with my family on a Monday afternoon; we were very curious to try their pizza and the experience was SO disappointing and far from what it is at our usual location. First of all, the prices were not updated. We were trying to figure out the price of their Valentine's coffee and had to assume it was the same price as their Christmas blend. Secondly, the person behind the counter was not very nice and we had to ask for the complimentary coffee that it's always offered to us at any other location when buying a bag of coffee. As for the pizza, we were not impressed at all, but the person making them was super nice! Before we left, I decided to use their restroom and this is where the entire experience became a nightmare. I'm still shocked by how disgusting it was! If you are thinking of studying or working from this location, DON'T! You shouldn't risk having to go pee while being there. There were about 4 people behind the counter on a very slow afternoon, and it seems like it's nobody's job to clean the restroom. I left absolutely disgusted! If you want to love this place and their coffee, please go to a different location. read more

And when I came over again I was standing and waiting and she turned to another barista and said "ugh this girl again". I love trying local coffee shops while I'm in an area I'm new to, so stopped by Bird Rock while I was in La Jolla. The good: I had their left coast latte which was a caramel latte, pretty good! Pretty standard, nothing super standout, but not bad. Now for the bad.. The unfortunate downside of matcha becoming such a big trend is that a lot of places are putting matcha on their menu without knowing how to make a proper matcha latte. And when I'm paying 7 for a 16 ounce latte, I'm expecting it to be a proper matcha latte. What I was given was honest to god the single worst matcha I've ever had. The matcha was not only underdosed but it also came with brown-green tint, clearly oxidized. The taste and balance was so off I had to throw the entire thing away. I really implore this spot to re-think if they should have matcha on their menu. read more

I stumbled upon Bird Rock Coffee Roasters as I was walking around La Jolla taking in the aesthetics. It looked like a really popular spot - judging solely from the number of people in the vicinity sipping their beverages. That being said, I made a mental note to check this place out later in the day after further explorations. There are several Bird Rocks in the SD area - this one is in a prime location near some of the other commercial businesses, but note that it's about 2-ish miles away from La Jolla Cove. The entire shop is very open with large windows that link the outside to the in; it's also pretty spacious with an ordering area/counter to the left and seating to the right. The decor is inoffensive, nothing too noteworthy but also very comfortable and fitting for the aesthetic. They have a good amount of beverages on the menu, separated by hot and cold. Additionally, they have a limited selection of food items. I decided to get the iced Sandpiper which was their version of a hazelnut latte. The beverage was very good - light and sweet without being overpowering. Service was good, I was taken care of promptly and my beverage was ready relatively quickly. Overall, I had a solid experience at Bird Rock - i wouldn't be against returning to explore of their menu next time I'm in the area. read more

I was looking for a place to work and grab some caffeine in La Jolla. This came up in my research of the area and WOW I love this place for its view, proximity to the beach, and the kindness of the people. I got a Honey B Latte (hot with almond milk) and it came to about the now usual ~$7. I ate at the place given that the free, nearby street parking is limited to two hours - I wanted to make the most of it. Service was kind and direct. There are a lot of different variations of coffee drinks you can choose from alongside smoothies! The baked goods looked delicious as well so someday I hope to come back and try. Early in the morning of a regular weekday, I was surprised by the number of families with young children who came to this place, which I think just goes to show how wonderful the cafe is. There are a good amount of inside seating, albeit it may be a little crowded the further back you go. There are outlets and WiFi that is provided. Be sure to check out the compliment jar - take one and leave one! I thought the cups they used were so cute and found myself taking a video for their design. I've heard the beans are also quite good - there seems to be a seasonal menu that goes around so if you're a passionate coffee bean lover, please check this place out! God bless you all read more

Bird Rock Coffee is my go to coffee shop when I'm near the beach. I enjoyed the Left Coast Latte and left very satisfied with this delicious latte. The hint of salt mixed with caramel is a perfect blend and definitely worth trying. The line was very long, but this was on Saturday around 10am.
