After lunch, I saw a…read morebakery glistening off in the distance, with windows steamed up from all the fresh baked goodness inside. This little bakery was jammed with all kinds of bread, pastries and cookies. I selected a sticky bun type of thing with raisins and currants as well as a chocolate chip cookie. Both were fantastic. If I could have eaten more, I would have ordered 1 of everything. It all looked very good. The service is excellent, with a bunch of ladies exuding classic English charm. Very pleasant and helpful.

Everything is made fresh every day, and every lunch time there is a queue out of the door. Service is pretty fast as it's over the high, goody-filled counter, but it's always polite. The BLT sandwiches are salty and full of awesome, the fresh cream cakes are hard to resist, and the custard slices are cut far more neatly than mine at home. I'm not particularly fond of the chocolate numbers myself, if I'm tempted, I go for the rhubarb and cherry slices (super moist), and things like the Belgian buns are pretty snazzy too. A couple of things worth noting are- They have a slicing machine- so if there's any loaves you want, but are only capable of cutting diagonal doorsteps at home, they can deal with it. If you want a hot sausage or bacon sandwich for example, you're possibly going to have a little wait as they like to cook things fresh. If you ring in advance, you can avoid standing in the corner by the fridge of drinks for a short while.

On a slow amble around Nottingham expecting new discoveries on a town we had stayed in for a few…read moremonths but never fully explored, we were pleasantly delighted when coming across the ugly bread bakery. The name initially made us wonder what weird and wonderful delights this cafe had to offer, and our choice was confirmed when spotting the empty top seats, looking comfy and almost calling our sore legs to have a rest. With the cold weather still around, we craved the comfort of coffee and chocolate and the ugly bread bakery did not disappoint. Upon entrance we were embraced with the smell of fresh bread, and the interior was quirky yet welcoming. When waiting for our coffee there were a huge range of Italian treats on offer to nibble at. The coffee was strong but softened with the milkiness of a cappuccino, and having a salted caramel brownie made the combination heaven. My friend ordered the hot chocolate and white chocolate brownie, and also seemed like he was caught in the same heaven I was. One consisting of a chocolate overload. I wasn't able to finish the whole brownie, it was definitely a very indulgent delight. The ugly bread bakery is averagely priced to most coffee shops and I have the intention to go again to try the pizza! Definitely recommend!
This is a little gem in resurgent Nottingham city center…read more Simple, classic fresh Italian food (which good all Italian food is). It also has the advantage of being a deli with some of authentic brands you won't find in the supermarket. I'm not sure what the name refers too, as all the sanwiches and pizza's looks amazing I had a virgin beef and mozzarella focaccia toasted and ate in and took in the views of the frantic boxing day shoppers doing their business (they do take away too). The bread was stunning, really fresh and soft and baked with sun dried tomatoes and herbs, the mozzarella creamy and the beef yummy, which was nice after all the white meat eaten over Christmas. There was some yummy looking carrot cake, but I was full after the sandwich so I will have to try that next time.
Brownies, coffee and chocolate galore

All feature crisp crusts and great solid texture unlike the mushy industrial breads at the supermarkets. Their lunch sandwiches are a treat as well. And beyond the breads the pastries and cakes are great as well. Even the pizzas offered Thursday evenings are excellent. The staff are friendly as well, but it can get very busy so a wait can be expected. The bread is a bit pricier than average at about £3 each, but you get what you pay for. They even offer half loaves as well. Also by afternoon you'll have only a choice of what's left, but we've never been disappointed. If you love great bread this is the place for you.
