Birds' motto is we never sell a stale cake and it's true, everything is completely freshly baked, all soft and fluffy and delicious. This one is a small store, so it gets pretty packed, especially in the mornings when they are fully stocked. If you go later on in the day you may be disappointed, as the popular items are usually sold out quite quickly. There is nothing similar to a Birds small cob and they do the BEST cakes around, in particular their caramel cream doughnuts. (I'm salivating just thinking about them) and their lemon curd tarts. Everything is always very fresh. The Ilkeston store is small but just right for the town. It serves freshly made filled cobs (that's baps or rolls to you non-midlanders) and sandwiches and this one also has a hot plate serving sausage cobs too. They also do gorgeous sausage rolls, pork pies, ham, etc and they have a catalogue of speciality cakes for special occasions, although I am yet to try them You have to experience Birds if you come this way sometime. It was this Bird's branch that my mother would send me out to every week to pick up a cream cake for each of us. My father's choice would ALWAYS be the vanilla cream slice! It was this very store that opened my eyes to a variety of cream cakes. It was only when I moved away from the Derby area, did I realize it was a regional specialty. For many years I would return and devour a huge selection of their cream cakes to make up for the times there has been a drought. My favourites include their cream bun, trifle, vanilla cream slice, cream meringue and apple puff. They also do confectionary, breads and savoury pasties/pies.
