Although mere feet from…read moreoffices crammed with PCs and juddering printers, stepping into the gardens here is like stepping into a hardier, more windswept corner of the city. Seagulls whirl and screech overhead and the wind comes whipping into your eyes from across the river. Until 1767, when Georges Dock was built (now crushed beneath the Liver Building), the tide used to lap against the churchyard's outer wall, a spot now occupied by the thundering traffic of the Strand. In 1849, it was closed to burials and now stands as a windswept patch of grass to suddenly find yourself on during bleak afternoons.

The views are magnificent with a clash of the old and the new on the skyline. St Nicholas is the Saint of Sailors (ahoy there!) and from its foundations up it is a beautiful piece of architecture which has been around one way or another since medieval times. Apparently, pre-Liver Buildings (can you imagine the Liverpool skyline without it?) before a Dock was built the Mersey waters used to lap against the wall surrounding the garden at high-tide! They also have a statue dedicated to the victims of the Blitz here which is worth seeing. I discovered this place at sunset... the sun setting the buildings aflame with an orange glow. It's a great time to see the city from here.

Ormskirk is a small market town in West Lancashire and there's not too much tourism stuff to see…read morehere. One of the main historical spots is the Ormskirk Parish Church, which apparently is quite unique as it is one of only three parish churches in England to have a tower and a spire which is special because both are at the same end of the building. There are also many famous people buried here including Thomas Stanley, the first Earl, who caused Richard III to lose his crown by changing sides at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485. It's easy to get to the church as it's just a couple minutes walk up the street from the town square with the clock tower. If you happen to be in Ormskirk, it's certainly worth strolling through the town and seeing this church.

The cemetry is based adjacent to the gargantuan Anglican Cathedral, which makes it appear so miniscule. However, it is not to be judged by its size, as this place makes a glorious stroll through an eerie and creepy section that is steeped in history. Whilst this destination isn't the most obvious place for tourists or locals to wander, it's sure to surprise many who visit this fascinating burial ground.

I have visited Liverpool Cathedral dozens of times over the years, but only recently took a walk…read moreround the beautiful gardens and cemetery that surround it - and was pleasantly surprised. St James Park is a moody, gothic graveyard sitting moat-like at the base of the city's gargantuan gothic cathedral. It is entered through an eerie tunnel lined with graves. It oozes atmosphere, full of moss-dappled walls, stone monuments and headstones, and creepily formed trees and plants. My other half loved this place and took dozens of photographs on the suitably wet and dreary afternoon we spent there.

The ancient village of Caerwys has an attractive church, hidden from the main road, in a large and…read moreexpansive churchyard. It has some interesting and historic furnishings. History Caerwys was laid out as a planned town by Edward I as part of his policy of embedding his conquest of Wales, receiving a charter in 1290. However, it is evident that there was a church here before then: in 1244 it was nominated as a meeting place between Henry III and Prince David of Gwynedd. The oldest part of the church is the tower, dating from the late 13th century. Dating the rest of the church is difficult, but the south nave has 14th century elements and the north nave features from the 15th, although it may date from an earlier period. The porch is a 19th century addition. Many of the features were restored in the 19th century. The church The church is dominated by its robust west tower, but also has the curious feature of a double nave, a speciality of the Vale of Clwyd area. Inside, the windows date from the 14th to 15th centuries, with some Victorian renewal. There is a two-bay arcade in the chancel leading through into the north nave, now effectively used as an aisle and separate chapel. The oldest furnishing is a wall tomb in the south chancel wall, with a 14th century cusped arch containing an effigy of earlier date. This is reputed to be of Elizabeth Ferrers (1250-c. 1300), wife of Dafydd, the last independent Prince of Wales. A window above has a small quantity of mostly jumbled late mediaeval glass, although the top light has two angels or saints carrying heads of wheat, surrounded by various floral emblems, including a Tudor rose. The chancel is screened off with some attractive woodwork panels, dating from the 17th century, and more, and possibly earlier woodwork forms a dado in the north nave. This includes two splendid facing dragons. Panelling from the box pews also lines the walls, one recording that it was the pew of Sir Thomas Mostyn, Baronet. The font is dated 1661 and is framed by some broken sepulchral panels of 14th century date, and some later tomb slabs. The door into the tower from the north nave is the original ancient main door.

It has many interesting memorials dating from the 16th century onwards, and a particularly fine decorated roof from the 16th century. History The church was built by John de Grey (of Ruthin Castle) in 1310, and founded as a collegiate church with a small community of 7 priests overseen by a Warden (a title still held by the Vicar). After the dissolution, the College was refounded as a grammar school, with the addition of almshouses. The earliest part of the church is the north aisle (the tower room now a vestry was the original choir). The original chancel (demolished in 1663) originally stood east of this, and the cloisters to the north now form part of the old college buildings. The south nave was constructed in the late 14th century, which included the insertion of the fine arcade, with its carved corbels. The magnificent roofs over the two naves was inserted around 1500-1540, and extensive restorations were carried out in the 18th and 19th centuries, the spire being erected in the 1850s. The church On entering, the scale of the double-naved church is immediately apparent. The arcade has interesting carved corbels, one of which may depict a bearded Negro. Apart from the arcade, 14th century details are hidden behind the organ, and outside on the north wall, where the remains of the cloister and priests' dwellings are now part of the Masonic Hall and music rooms. Back inside, look up, and let you eyes adjust to the gloom; the Tudor roofs over the naves are simply magnificent, containing over 408 carved panels and dozens of painted bosses. The church also includes some fine memorials: there are rare early Welsh brasses to Edward Goodman (d. 1560), and unusually a separate one for his wife and family on which he appears again. One of their sons, Gabriel Goodman, became Dean of Westminster and chaplain to William Cecil, Elizabeth I's Chief Minister, and founded the grammar school and almshouses. His splendid memorial, complete with life-sized painted bust, overlooks the High Altar. There are a number of other elegant 17th, 18th and 19th century memorials. The current congregation has an active church life and strong tradition of church music.

St. Asaph Cathedral is a hidden gem located in the small city of St. Asaph in North Wales. This…read morehistorical structure is dedicated to their patron Saint Asaph. Constructed in the 6th century, the current structure dates back to the 13th century, with elements of Gothic design. The exterior is characterized by its simple stonework, and a large bell tower that rises above the surrounding village. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a nave adorned with beautiful stained glass windows that filter light into a kaleidoscope of colors. The wooden ceiling is composed of intricate stone carvings. The cathedral has been a center of worship for centuries since the Middle Ages. The church offers free guided tours about its rich history and architecture. The grounds are perfect for a peaceful stroll, and the nearby Elwy river adds to the picturesque setting. St. Asaph Cathedral is steeped in history that dates back to the 6th century. It was established as a monastic site by Saint Asaph, who is believed to have been a student of Saint David, the patron saint of Wales. I attended a Sunday service and was overwhelmed by the deep resonant tones of the organ reverberating against the stone walls and stirring up my emotions. The powerful sounds created by the organ and the angelic voices of the choir honestly brought me to tears. As tears welled in my eyes I felt the music resonate through my heart. I'm not fond of organized religion, however, the experience here at St Asaph Cathedral was quite moving; perhaps because the village is my birthplace, where my Mum rests in peace and home of my ancestors.

The Parish Church of St Mary's holds the privileged status of being Knowsley's only Grade I listed…read morebuilding. It's a magnificent piece of architecture, dominating the town (and in fact the whole county, of which its steeple is the highest point above sea-level). The interior is packed with interesting historical and architectural features, and on one of several days of the year when the church is open to tourists, there is usually an expert on hand to give a free guided tour. If you're looking for a place of worship, the church is a friendly, diverse community with a traditional, fairly high church style of service. The highlight of the week's worship is Sung Eucharist at 10am on Sunday.

Prescot is an ancient market town, already important enough by the 14th century to appear on the…read morefamous Bodleian Library map of Britain. Formerly part of the hundred of West Derby, the county of Lancaster and the diocese of Chester, Prescot now belongs to the diocese of Liverpool and has been since 1970 one of the constituent towns of the metropolitan borough of Knowsley. The hill site and circular churchyard of the parish church suggest Celtic origins. The name Prescot means 'priests's dwelling'. By medieval times Prescot had developed into a thriving market town and had become head of a huge parish covering much of SW Lancashire, extending for 58 square miles and including 15 separate townships. The manor came into the possession of the crown through the duchy of Lancaster and in 1447 Henry VI bestowed it as a founding endowment on his new King's College at Cambridge. Both town and parish have rich historical records, with manor court rolls surviving from 1511, churchwardens' accounts from 1523 and parish registers from 1538. The earlier portions of all these have been transcribed and published and the remainder are deposited at the Lancashire Record Office in Preston. The parish church is a Grade I Listed building (the only one in the borough). It was largely rebuilt in 1610 and the existing nave, and roof are all of this date. Of the earlier church, only the vestry, font and parts of the chancel walls survive. The present tower was built in 1729 and the spire in 1797. The side aisles were widened in 1819. Despite catastrophic redevelopment in the 1960s, involving the demolition of many of the town's Georgian buildings and the destruction of parts of the medieval street pattern, the town retains many ancient features, including a long section of the ancient town walls. The town developed as a centre of coal-mining and pottery and was also an important coaching centre. From the 18th century its chief fame lay in the production of watch movements and files: a process splendidly displayed in today's Prescot Museum. In the 20th century there arose an almost exclusive dependence on cable-making and the departure of B.I.C.C. left huge employment problems however in recent years much work has gone into encouraging inward investment and there is hope of future growth with modern factory units and good motorway links. Knowsley Borough Council has completed a comprehensive redevelopment and renewal of the town centre, including the semi-pedestrianisation of the area of Church Street adjacent to the Parish Church and the replacement of the old BICC site with the large Cables Retail Park. The town which can easily be by passed is well worth a visit with a host of good eateries and decent shopping.

Edge Hill Railway Station is nearby about 10-15 minutes walk from Tunnel Road down Wavertree Road to Irvine Street. The entrance to the church is on Irvine Street almost opposite the Bears Paw Pub and Williamsons Tunnel entrance in the students accommodation. St Mary's Church has closed temporarily while the roof work is underway. Services are being held jointly with St Cyprian's Church at Kensington Junior School, Brae Street, off Edge Lane Quorn Street.
