My fellow drinkers seemed to be very accommodating when it came to making room for strangers at their tables. There are no pumps, the beer is dispensed from barrels in a side room. The person behind the bar was very friendly (especially as I had wandered behind the bar myself) and (once I had slunk round to the correct side of the counter) served me Summa That (the name of the beer, from the Branscombe brewery). A good pub anytime, but another one that must be even better in the summer when you can take your drink outside. The building dates from the 16th century and the pub has been run by the same family since the late 19th century.

The pub is CAMRA (campaign for real ale) recommended and also has a royal seal of approval with the Queen visiting the pub back in the late 90's.

I chose Teignworthy Reel Ale from the three on pump before I saw the awesomely named Bucket of Blood (on gravity with 1 other), by 1 of my favourite breweries, St Austell. Shame I didn't have time for another, but my pint was pretty good anyway. Sporty pub too. Darts and a screen towards the back. Liverpool are the pubs team of choice (never mind, eh).

As we were having 'a bit of a session' we left the strong ramification-laden port-stout and went for a reliable and tasty pint of Otter Ale During our whole visit we were constantly distracted and our conversation interrupted by bird noises. We couldn't see a pet bird (and it sounded kind of fake) but whomever or whatever was making the noises was incredibly annoying, marring the visit slightly.

It has a fair range of beers so spent a couple of hours here, then we discovered that they had a restaurant upstairs. The following night we decided to have a meal here, the food was fresh and sourced locally; I was impressed with the quality and the price of our meals. I had Prawns as a starter followed by steak with all the trimmings, my partner had Steak Pie followed by Lemon Meringue all for £36.00 and that included a bottle of wine. I often cycle there from Dawlish Warren and have a drink and if I don't eat at double locks I have food here. Can get very busy from cyclists, walkers and people coming on the ferry from Topsham. Its great to eat here, get the ferry over to Topsham with my bike then cycle to Exeter where I can then get the train home or cycle back. Great to sit by the river and watch the boats go by.

So why is this pub so great - Only people who know about it and can be bothered to make the effort go there. So that makes it special. Staff are friendly and very help full. I think its family run and so the staff are friends and family. Good real ales and they do a bit of larger. They are know for food so I expect they do a decent bottle of wine or two and the food I have had - chips were good. They often on hot sunny weekends have outdoor bar as well and a BarBQ going on. They don't mind you going out there an pitching a tent as you will want to have a couple of drinks and take in the views and sea/estuary air. Cyclists - You will like this as its about 8 miles out from Exeter so you get a decent cycle on cycle/footpaths. Only the last 1/2 miles will you have to dodge cars and you don't get to many of them. So this pub is ace. I hope I have not spoilt it by sending you lot there, but go on, this can be our little secret.

I had a simple ham, egg and chips. Sorry, used the word simple but this was not your standard fayre. The eggs were free range and the ham just melted in the mouth. Normally a bit of chewing is needed but this ham, as i have said, melted. Lovely pub to finish off the day having wandered around this interesting village/hamlet.

The Old Inn is a large, recently refurbished brewery pub. It has a mixture of small dining rooms…read moreand larger eating areas. There is a large, attractive beer garden and parking at the rear. The smaller rooms have some charm but the larger area could be any plastic pub. I visited The Old Inn on a Thursday in May with a couple of friends after a long and tiring day. I had recommended it after a pleasant previous visit made better by Munich Hofbrau on tap. When we arrived in the pub at 10pm and ordered a round there wasn't anyone else in there. About 20 minutes later the manager turned the music off which struck us as a little odd. At 10.30pm we went to the bar to get another round before the bell rang for last orders. Our simple, "Same again please," was met with an abrupt, "We're shut," from the manager. We left. And went to the Rugglestone Inn down the road.
