But once he started at the Phoenix School, things turned around. He came home after the first day and said, "It's like the teachers aren't even teachers--they're just people!" The caring relationship with his teachers, the community at the school, the way his teachers push him to do more than he thought he could and support him as he learns to push himself has been amazing. He loves school now and is thriving academically, socially, and emotionally. The way they integrate learning across all their activities is special. Students learn all the academic skills throughout all their activities, along with specialized practice in, say, math or writing, especially as they get older. They also use the community at large as their classroom with frequent out-of-the-classroom learning experiences that engage students far more than anything I've seen at any other school. Teachers support students as they produce high-quality work, with autonomy and ownership over their own learning. Teachers are among the most dedicated professional educators I've ever met. They work hard to create a community of students, faculty, staff, parents, and community members dedicated to the well-being and education of students as complete people. It's not possible for me to say enough good things about this school.

Both of my kids were good students upon entering Tower School, but because Tower has small class sizes they were able to receive lots of extra attention in English, Math, and the Arts. They blossomed as readers, writers, artists, and each discovered a love of technology. Both also played sports and participated in the middle school drama program. It was wonderful to see them develop as young people, and discover what excited them at school. Our whole family made lifelong friends a Tower too. Although the academics are top notch, there is just something missing there. For instance, today they fired a teacher who was probably the best in the entire school. It was ugly and it occured in the middle of the school year. I consider that disgraceful. The athletics are top notch, and so if your son is an athlete you might consider St. John's. Overall, I would've given three stars, but after today's disgraceful and ugly firing, I have to give only two. It just reinforces my previous belief that the adminstration is incompetent. I literally saw a sign, a lawn sign, and as soon as I pulled up the website I knew this was the answer. We went in for a day to check it out and participated in a class that asked us to write down emotions that were putting holes in our buckets. We then went outside and burned them in a fire pit. This was exactly the type of place I wanted my son to be. My son was stressed out about the grades and tests and homework at his public school. We loved that Plumfield doesn't "test" their knowledge but rather has them do narration for what they are learning, really thinking about and writing down or speaking what they've learned. Our son works through his math book at his own pace. Beyond the general academics Plumfield teaches scripture while allowing the children to share and have their own beliefs. I love that they do nature study, logic, and the arts (drama, music, acting, etc). And my son is currently working through 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens which he has very much enjoyed. We love the "nontraditional" approach offering our child broader, life oriented lessons. The teachers have all been wonderful and supportive. The director John is an honest, wonderful man who has developed a loving relationship with my son helping him through struggles in his life. Our son says Plumfield feels like a family. We feel incredibly grateful that we were able to find this gem of a school for our son to finish out his middle school years. He is working with Plumfield to apply to St John's Prep for high school and we truly believe Plumfield has offered him the best preparation for his high school career.

I was placed in peabody hall this year with no notice that there would be construction directly outside of my dorm for the ENTIRE year. As someone who works full time and usually until 12 am, getting woken up EVERY morning by drilling and beeping sucked. When I contacted housing and the RD of my building about moving dorms I was ghosted. I've gotten food poisoning from the dining hall over 4 times. Everytime I've stepped foot into marsh dining hall, there's been mice. The students here are inconsiderate and if you get asked to do a group project, be prepared to do the bulk of it. Faculty doesn't reach out and help with career guidance upon gradation- you get to figure it all out on your own! If you are just looking for a degree and no community or a miserable college experience Salem State is the place for you!
