My Son and I had dinner yesterday at Bistro 12. We had reservations, but arrived a little early at 5:30. They seated us right away and throughout the meal, the service was excellent. This is a small, compact place with about 2 dozen tables, but the tables are large enough and arranged well so that you don't feel crowded in. They have a small bar, but not for sitting, just serving. Everything seemed to be clean. The restaurant fills up very quickly; so you definitely need reservations. We both ordered a glass of chardonnay from Chile and lobster bisque, and we split an arugula salad. For the main course my Son ordered veal scallopini and I had the rabbit. For dessert we shared the Molotoff, which is a merengue. I had espresso and my Son a cappucino. At the beginning, they brought some nice fresh bread with a choice of butter or olive oil. The soup was so delicious with tender lobster chunks (best I've had in years). At that point I was thinking of giving a rating of 5, but then my entre was disappointing. The sauce was good, but the rabbit was tough and tasteless. My Son enjoyed his scallopini. The salad, although not exceptional, was good. We also unexpectedly received some vegetables on the side with our entre. The dessert and coffee were also good and blessedly light because the portions here are huge. We were very stuffed by the time we left. I would definitely return if, for no other reason, the soup; but I would order a different entre - maybe a pasta. read more

We had a great dinner here on a busy Saturday night. They were accommodating in squeezing in our party of 3. No problem with having our 11 year old and they made her a delish butter pasta. Another great evening at Bistro 12. MAKE A RESERVATION!!!! I won't bore you with our excellent dinner choices because everything you've already read is completely true! But this time we actually saved room for dessert and ordered the chocolate mousse cake and limoncello pie. Both were PHENOMENAL! (And I don't usually rave about desserts because I could make most of them better at home.) These were worthy and made with love . The owners make you feel like you're spending a meal at their home in Portugal. They are gracious and generous. You never feel rushed. We ordered 2 glasses of dessert wine (there were 4 of us at the table.) Soon after the two glasses came, the owner smiled and dropped off the rest of the bottle (about half filled) and two more glasses Make sure to mention if you're celebrating something special. Been meaning to try Bistro 12 for awhile now however hadn't gotten to because of my kid. Went out for my birthday awhile back and finally got to. Not sure why walking by it so many times that I thought it was bigger. Very nice inside with paintings etc, however also very tiny. Reminds me of a restaurant in the village. Service is very friendly and on point, which is definitely an advantage of a smaller place as they can see everything and anticipate. They are also very used to folks walking across the street to a show, so they were on point with the timing; this made is feel even more so like a place from the city. I got a negroni which was well made. Menu is interesting, however we kept it simple and got a beet salad. This is something we order a lot, and this was a very good version. I got the capellini with shrimp, lobster, crab and arugula in a white wine sauce. This was interesting as it was more of a broth than a garlic/oil heavy rendition, however it was very good. They were generous with all of the seafood, so combined with soaking up the broth it ended up being on the heavy side. Kind of wish they used Maine lobster to differentiate more from the crab (even if it meant less meat) however that's a minor gripe. My wife got the eggplant parm and loved it. Would've liked to get dessert, however we were on a schedule. Needed a reliable Italian place in town with a versatile menu, and this fits the bill. They also take reservations unlike most other places on this drag, which is great if you've a parent who doesn't get out much. Will be back! read more

Disappointed, we had high hopes. The fresh bread and squash soup were very good, but the entree was like 'the emperor's new clothes' devoid of spice or flavor. Fabulous restaurant located right across the street from the Terrytown music Hall. We didn't have a reservation but went quite early, so the restaurant was still empty. By the time we left, every table was occupied. I noticed people simply walking by to say hello to the owners/proprietors. Clearly, these folks are established in the neighborhood and certainly very well liked. The menu is eclectic and has Portuguese, Italian and French influenced options. My only reservation was that "rabbit" was on the menu. That's a hard "no" since I had a pet bunny and he was my soulmate. Just can't eat rabbit and often don't even go to restaurants that have bun bun on the menu. But, I hadn't examined the menu prior to going...and ultimately glad we chose Bistro 12. Great service, delicious food. I had an arugula salad and followed up with a delicious, light seafood-lemon based pasta dish. The mix of lobster, shrimp and scallops were chopped into small pieces and the lemon sauce perfectly complimented the thin pasta. The bread and butter alone-I could make a meal out of that! Crusty on the outside...hot and perfectly bready on the inside...I stopped myself after 2 pieces. It wasn't easy. They started by taking our drink order and then served us warm bread with butter. So delicious! Ok- where do I begin? I don't know because there's so much I can't honestly choose where to begin at this Main St, Tarrytown box-feel restaurant. But while most people hate to stand around, we were really in the sidelines and looking at a packed-house, semi socially-distant place waiting for a table. Hubs thought this wasn't so bad. Our guesstimated 7:45 reservation was so poorly managed, we ended standing up with my weak red Sangria while hubs enjoyed his Jack neat in the hallway til 8:20 when we finally sat. Hubs saw the positives in all this- I just wanted to get the hell out. The owner was extremely sympathetic though and checked on us every chance he got. He went above and beyond but let me spare you the antics. Since he noticed my frustration, we nonetheless appreciated the first drink on the house while we cackled. Like I said- this isn't the normal waiting for a table experience. So where do I begin? When a party of 4 finally wrapped up with their snail-paced 2+hour dinner, that table was cleaned and fully draped with a new tablecloth for us. Thank goodness we sat by the wall creating a 6' distance from the next table. Service was very pleasant and Miguel the owner- again made sure we were taken care of. Our $16 Grilled Octopus on dressed Escarole was so delectable- but for the price, we expected a bigger tentacle instead of just two measly slices and Arugula+Walnut+Apple Salad was good. My Stewed Branzino was tasty and hubs thought his Risotto with chunky, cut up Filet Mignon pieces was good- but "different". A bad situation can be good or a bad situation can be bad. It's just in the delivery. Outside of the 35 minutes we waited standing up and holding up the walls, from the time we literally sat down, ordered our appetizers, drinks, entrees and the time we put on our coats, was a bit over an hour. You'd think we rushed with our dinner- but we didn't. Don't worry about 'wolfing down your food' or think like you have to beat the clock because you don't need to do that. We enjoyed our meals accordingly timed AND we were here for a little over an hour. There were people here (as the owner told us) who had been sitting for more than 2+hrs. What the hell? This isn't your house! So to all patrons who'd love and want to desperately lounge for hours on end..... THESE ARE COVID TIMES people, eat your food, be considerate and get the fuck out. Doesn't look like much, small storefront on a busy street full of restaurants - but inside it's a different story! Decorated with guitars and Portuguese pottery, artwork (for sale, I think), and a full bar at the back of the seating area, it's an intimate space. Friends chose the place but hadn't been there before either, so 4 of us didn't know what to expect but the menu looked good. They'd made a 5:30 res but our train got in early, so we were just the 2nd table seated that midweek evening. An hour or so later, every table was filled. My husband and I shared the arugula endive salad w apple slices and walnuts ($3 upcharge to split the salad) and our friends shared the Caesar. Very good salads. The bread and butter served at the table was excellent! Full bar, but one friend had an individual bottle of Prosecco, her husband had scotch, mine had wine, and I had a beer. And then...the food! The menu's mixed, mainly Italian and Portuguese, some Greek or Spanish (to my mind, that's the grilled octopus), and steakhouse. I chose the branzino livornese, different from the livornese I've had before, and excellent. I got a lovely fillet of fish topped with capers and a bit of the delicious sauce; a side of very fresh steamed zucchini and carrots; and a small white or red potato halved; with just enough sauce on the plate to be tasted and enjoyed but it didn't drown the food. I dipped some bread in to sop up a little sauce when I was finished eating. My husband had the seafood over linguine and he was really happy with the generous portion of seafood! Our friend had the cheese ravioli which he finished and loved, and his spouse really loved her chicken francese. Portions were satisfying but we didn't leave uncomfortably stuffed. I'd promised myself I wouldn't have dessert - but when I saw flan on the menu I conveniently disregarded my promise! Yum! As we left, one of the gentlemen who seem to be the owners came outside with us and told us that all the artwork inside was painted by him! When I asked, he told me he's originally from Madeira Island, off the coast of North Africa, but he's Portuguese. Charming man, and he and the other gentleman strummed guitars as they sang happy birthday to a patron at another table. It was just a delightful evening! Restaurant meals are expensive these days, but we don't mind it as much if we feel we're getting what we pay for. We most definitely enjoyed the food, the service, and the ambiance. If and when I ever get up to Tarrytown again, I'd willingly go to Bistro 12 again! read more

Coworkers & I stepped in for lunch on Friday mid-February. No other patrons present the entire time (hmm). Staff greeted us with a smiling welcome and sat us with waters and warm bread immediately. Space is small and cozy, with pressed white table cloth settings and intimate ambiance. We ordered : Apps - Grilled Octopus - overly salty for my pallet but good overall. Lobster bisque - coworkers said it was underwhelming and on the watery side House salad - beautifully presented and tasted just as good. Entrees - Seafood risotto - overly salty, had good amount of seafood pieces, can use a bit more seasoning Ravioli w/truffle mushroom and white sauce - tasty, creamy, soft, and hit the spot! Penn a la vodka w/ chicken - soft, just the right amount of sauce, thin sliced white meat chicken - also yummy. Dessert - Portuguese pudding - actually flan, and I'm not a flan fan, but this one makes me consider to be one Carrot cake - fluffy, not so sweet, tasty but too many raisins. Lemon cake - must try! Almond cake - just the right amount of sponge texture, fluffy, and Suttle almond flavor - a winner. All in all its a good place to take it up a level in your dining experience. Definitely a good place for formal dinner, dates, etc. The salt level on their risotto can kill your appetite. We've asked about the salt level to staff and I think they gave the carrot cake on the house for that. The warm bread offered is a nice touch but not worth the calories in terms of taste. Price to portion ratio is a bit on the disappointing side. Extremely conflicted on what rating to assign. The food merits a 4 at least. The employees rate a 3 or solid 1. So what went wrong and ruined this dinner? I don't need to explain or justify the COVID precautions I'm taking currently to anyone. My waiter brought it up a couple times but wasn't overly pushy about it. Toward the end of my meal, a different waiter who I had had no previous interactions with came up to me and started lecturing me about how I'm wrong. WTF. What made this idiot think that was an ok thing to do to a guest? I almost wanted to leave without paying with that level of disrespect. At this point I feel like the food doesn't matter. Find this local gem while we were visiting our kids. A storefront restaurant serving European food. Just wanted a little bit since we flew in and had a late lunch. I tried the Grilled Octopus, Garlic /Oil and Escarole and Fried Calamari with Tomato Sauce. Both very good. My wife ordered the Butternut Squash Soup and the Eggplant Rollatini. Bistro 12 is our super favorite restaurant in Tarrytown! The food is always super fresh & delicious. My husband loves their lobster bisque and the seafood risotto ( but they are each so rich that he has to decide which one to have that evening). I love all the shrimp dishes as well as the branzino-I'm never disappointed. Service is both friendly and efficient. And the owners!!! Enjoy all the paintings lining the walls-all painted by Miguel. Wonderful service and good food, although not outstanding for me. The big disappointment for our table and the reason for 2 stars was that we have a severe dairy allergy with one of our guests and we asked the waitperson repeatedly if certain dishes had dairy. Not only did the staff say one of the dishes did not have dairy when it clearly had butter sauce (we are confident that they washed that chicken entree when this was pointed out and merely re-served it) but served us clams with dairy in the broth and told us that there was no dairy in that dish. My guest was and is still sick from yesterday's meal. Her allergies are severe. It was very disappointing. If the restaurant cannot prepare non dairy, please let us know - please do not guess your answers - and we will find another place to eat. We understand that this is an inconvenience and understand that we may not be able to eat in your restaurant. Even a teaspoon of dairy or something like using a spatula that flipped a butter based omelet, is enough for my guest to be sick for days. The meal was certainly not worth this. Cozy and comfortable Bistro 12 is a great dinner spot before a show. A recent visit left us smiling as the staff here more than cares about their guests. Shared appetizers arrived on separate plates. Utensils were replaced with each dish. Specialty orders are professionally explained in detail. Suggested wine order worked and a dessert wine bottle was left on the table (no it was not finished). A family type atmosphere surrounds this quaint dining establishment. The food lived up to the service... Appetizers included the Burrata with Black Truffle and Tomato - the cheese was wonderfully fresh and tasteful - and the Cod Fish Cake which was another shared winner. Our main selections were the Filet of Branzino with vegetables and the fish special "Salt Cod Fillet". Both selections were satisfying.
