The new and modern places are over street, in the neighborhood and not that well visited. The sandwiches are delicious and the shakes (choose with yoghurt, that makes it smoother and tastier) are great! You can sit outside or inside nearby the window to watch the pedestrian walk by :) The owner is really nice and he's also attentive. To make it short: best place nearby the center but not crowded by tourists :)

The service was American good*. The guy who took our orders was very nice and the place itself is cozy, with a big communal table, where my party sat down to eat. The setting is simple and the atmosphere is relaxed, and though they close at 20:00 they did not rush my party out of there when it was time to close but let us take our time to finish our meal. But the food. Oh, the catastrophe of microwaved food. Everything looked delicious and when the server put the first dish in what looked like a microwave-oven combo, I prayed that he use the "oven" function. Alas, our chicken in sweet wine sauce would be more aptly called "cardboard chicken in goo" and if you've never been a victim in the culinary train wreck that is microwaved pizza, let me just recommend you get dental insurance in case you decide to try it because it's like biting into sheetrock covered in tomato paste jam. In any case just about everything we ate was dry and for the price my party paid for it all we could have gotten a few delicious, fresh-out-of-the-oven pizzas at another place I know nearby. ------ *If you're new to Amsterdam allow me to explain that by local standards good service includes a server who acknowledges you at all before closing time and having only some crumbs stuck to spilled coffee on your table instead of someone else's previous night's dinner.

There are lots of food trucks during the 3 days where you can get gyros, great curry's which was wrapped up with rice (so gooood!), popcorn (opened by homeless people) and even 'bio' fries and vegetarian kroket! Next to the food trucks, there are great cooking workshops, pub quiz, gallery and other events like the opening of the FFF where we have attended. There is also a pop-up restaurant which was runned by some great chefs like Bridges. The menu was inspired by the following terms: 'good, clean and fair'. These key words were also the main reason why they created the Food Film Festival. I also watched the movie Food Chains, which was all about the buying power of the big supermarkets in the USA. Next to this, I really do recommend you to attend of the parties in the following FFF edition! The vibe was good, there were different DJ's and great lighting and presentations during the parties. Just be there in the following FFF edition, if you are obsessed with FOOD! ;)

I had a plain corned beef sandwich which was so good I decided to try the pastrami. That was even better. Had that with onions, pickles, and this yummy cheese. Sandwiches are small so I wasn't too full after my second. The owner cooks the meat fresh and is very proud of his work. All of the food I saw was delicious looking. There are two tables and a little counter and some outside seating when the weather is nice. I think I'll come back tomorrow on my way out of town.

Sadly this meant a Dutch pub quiz with many questions about Dutch politics, Dutch vocabulary and Dutch culture, that the quiz master could translate for our table upon request, so this wasn't a huge success. The quiz master himself seemed bored, and got irritated with the chatter and laughter of the participants. Take it easy dude, it's only a pub quiz and it's meant to be fun! Two out of the six teams left during the intermission. Food was pretty decent and it was a nice local bar, but it's not my neighborhood and all in all the experience was disappointing so I won't be returning.

It had an eclectic bookstore feel to me with its grade-school-like tables and chairs, exposed ductwork, and decorative lighting. The hexagons painted on the floors and the artwork on the walls gave the cafe some character. I was just excited to find a vegan restaurant in Amsterdam! We started with the Bitter Ballen, which are a traditional Dutch snack made with meat served with mustard. This was obviously a vegan version and these gooey balls were served with mustard. They were a little underwhelming, but I was happy to try a traditional Dutch snack veganized. We tried two other dishes -- the Fried Seitan Sandwich made with seitan, jalapenos, and tomatoes on a sub roll. It was pretty good. And I had the Quinoa and Black Bean Burger, which was also very good! The desserts in the dessert case were tempting, but we were pretty full and couldn't make room for them. I'll definitely come back to this place to try more when I return next year!

I left…read moreimpressed enough with this place that I considered not writing the review simply to keep it for myself. Momentary Ayn Rand moment aside, you've gotta try this place when in Amsterdam. It's tucked a bit outside the centre of the city to the west, and well worth the walk. Their coffee is good not great, but the variety of nut milks available with it make it fun. The food - ohhhh the food. The Banh Xeo is special - unique, solid Asian flavours make this new take on an already unique food in Western market a hit for just €9,50. And the Gepaneerde Aubergine is perfectly crafted for maximum flavour - just special for just €7,50. The veg burger is rumoured to be the best you'll ever have - I had to stop, but write me when you venture in to let me know how it was! The fresh juices are super refreshing. The staff even more so. Fear not if you don't speak Dutch - plenty of friendly English coming from the team here. Come hungry...but as with all vegan food, make sure you're not too far from more food in a few hours' time when you're hungry again.
