My sandwich quest continues and I found myself at Bite, a cute small sandwich shop with a blue counter, handwritten chalkboard menu, Boar's Head meats, and chickens roasting on the rotisserie. Sandwiches are made to order - you can design your own or choose from some of their specialty sandwiches. They sell Dirty potato chips, drinks, olive oil, deli salads, rotisserie chicken, and meats & cheeses by the pound. You could probably stand inside and eat it there or sit on one of two stools, plus they have a small table outside (but it's clearly mostly a takeout kind of place). * Gouda good ($7.49): The sandwich is short and wide. The Dutch crunch roll was soft, chewy, warm and fresh but didn't have any "crunch" at all. In the roll I found a generous amount of shredded lettuce (not a fan of shredded lettuce). The sandwich also had tomato slices, onions, peppercorn sauce (resembled a strong stoneground mustard), nicely seasoned but dry chopped up rotisserie chicken. The bread to fillings ratio pleased me. It was a good solid, well made sandwich but didn't thrill me. The portion wasn't huge (as in Little Lucca or Bonne Sante where one sandwich is good for two meals) but it was satisfying. They offer a wider selection of meat, cheese and dressings/spreads than most sandwich shops. There isn't any fro-yo close to this place - you'd have to walk to Tuttimelon in Chinatown. read more

In honor of National Sandwich Month I decided to try this sandwich shop previously reviewed by Yelp friend Lauren C. I hiked up here directly from Pier 45 following the Ride the Ducks event, and if I ever needed food it was then. The aroma of the rotisserie chicken smelled fabulous. I noticed it before I even stepped into the tiny sandwich place. I had roasted chicken for dinner though so Bite's chicken will have to wait until my next visit. The huge menu board offers specialty sandwiches, build your own sandwiches with a full list of available ingredients, sausages served on a roll, side salads and specialty salads. Considering it was 10 PM on only their first week of operation the shop was quite busy. I spoke briefly to the owner who also has a gelato shop (Dolce) next door on one side of the sandwich place and a mini market (Yogi) on the other side. He was very nice and even gave me a coupon for a free gelato at Dolce. I had already placed my order, but the sandwich makers seemed a bit backed up with previous orders. I had ordered the "Day After Thanksgiving" specialty sandwich with some minor improvements replacing the Swiss cheese with pepperjack (The sandwich maker would end up giving me both cheeses.) I also asked for no red onions and no cranberry sauce opting instead for the pepperhouse dressing. Some nights I need extra spice. Last night was one of those nights. Shredded lettuce, tomatoes, jalapenos and pickles finish off all sandwiches unless otherwise requested. I finally got a gigantic wrapped monstrosity put into a plain white bag to go. I ate my sandwich at a friend's house a few blocks away. The sandwich was a bit on the messy side with an abundance of dressing and lots of shredded lettuce. I appreciated the sliced turkey breast as I had also seen turkey loaf in the shop's refrigerated foods compartment. The hard roll was, well, hard! I wish I wrote a review for this sooner. It would've been a 5. The first time I had the Firecracker and it left me wanting more! Thus, why I went back a second time. This was seriously going to be our "go to" spot in the city. A health score of 100. But that can't be. Can it? I mean... I understand that pests are almost inevitable. Especially in a big city like SF. But.. I really don't want to see two roaches running all over the menu boards. That's the first thing a customer looks at! YIKES! Since we were already in the sandwich shop and went out of our way to get there, reluctantly, we ordered anyway. We stepped out next door to see what their chip options were and grabbed some chips there. When I went back in to see if our sandwiches were ready, I kept looking at the white walls. I kept telling myself, the sandwich station is clean, so it should be OK. Then sure enough, I saw a roach running on the wall above the refrigerator + boxes on the refrigerator. I was pretty underwhelmed by my sandwich here. I made my way out to Bite today to pick up a menu of their sandwiches - since they don't have a complete one online anywhere. I decided that since I was in the area - I may as well try a bready Bite. Despite filling in an order sheet for my sandwich - my sandwich didn't come out right and I just wasn't wowed by it. I never really eat sandwiches - so when I do - I want it to be a glorious experience. Bite was just that - a couple of bites of a basic sandwich. Their peppercorn sauce - which I had high hopes for - was a bit of a let-down. Their roasted chicken, which I'm sure is great on it's own - was just OK. Bite is a small operation and if you're thinking of doing a bulk order (which was my original plan in picking up the menu) - just know that it will definitely be awhile. If you live nearby Bite - I think it's a good option for a solid sandwich. If you want a quality late night bite - Bite is pretty spot on. But if you're looking for a glorious sandwich in the afternoon and you're nowhere near Bite - I recommend saving the trip and investigating the slew of other formidable sandwich spots around you. It's a popular foodie question in San Francisco, and while Ike's has cracked its way into Yelp's Top 100 places to eat in 2016, I didn't have a preference between Ike's Place or Bite: both have excellent Sammies. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? Both Ike's and Bite are small, with limited indoor and outdoor seating, but Ike's definitely takes the cake when it comes to service. The servers are conversational and friendly even when the lines get long. You won't find lines of comparable length at Bite, but you'll also get ever so slightly colder service. Not a big deal, and both are fine the way they are; but if you're looking for a friend who can hook you up with sammies you're more likely to find that person behind the counter at Ike's. Neither Ike's nor Bite will rip you off, but there is quite a bit more value to be had at Bite, where my much larger sandwich ran me only $8.99 compared to $11.11 at Ike's. Open until 2am. Decent and tasty sandwich shop located just 4 blocks away from the "theater district" hub of late night eateries/ or 5 blocks away from Union Square. It's very difficult to find street parking in this area. This new tiny shop is relatively unknown, and without much foot traffic. Ideal when hungry for something other than a burger. Choose from the 9 sandwich specials or create your own combination. Prices are moderate - most sandwiches are under $8, soup/chili under $5, sides (coleslaw, german potato salad, etc.) are $2.99, plus a few salads ($5-8), and roasted chicken for $7.49 half/ $10.99 whole. Drink choices (water & a few sodas, yerba mate tea) are limited, but you can get any type of beverage at the corner store next door (Yogi Food Market), it's the same owner. What a great late night bite! My spouse and I took a short walk here after seeing the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Play. It was a short and safe walk from Curran Theater. We got the Gooda good and the sleeper. Really good sandwiches though I will say the bread was toasted a bit too much for my liking in that it was a roof scraper and that I wouldn't get the Gooda good again because it was too mustardy. I think the peppercorn sauce has mustard as well or a mustardy flavor and that might have been the issue. I'm not too big of a fan of mustard though, so perhaps someone with a stronger affinity would be a big fan, or perhaps it just had more mustard/peppercorn sauce that usual. The lady working there said it was the most popular, which is why I got it. Wow, I couldn't get to my Yelp app fast enough to write a glowing review of this place. The moment I walked in the door I was overcome by the intoxicating aroma of fresh rotisserie chicken. After reviewing the menu and placing my order (Firecracker turkey with sprouts and avocado) the opportunity to bite into this delicious work of art couldn't come soon enough. I practically sprites back to the hotel so I could dig in. Not only did the sandwich exceed my already high expectations, I can honestly say this is the best sandwich I've had all year. I've been depending on Bite to satisfy my late night food cravings for several years now. There are so many delicious sandwich options from which to choose, but my favorite is definitely the Gobbler (with no pickles...why do people like pickles?). They have some decent salad options too, but the sandwiches are definitely the stars of the menu. And, if you have a sweet tooth, you'll be happy to know that each order comes with a lollipop! The only reason that I can't give this place 5 stars is that there are occasionally issues when I order ahead: sometimes my sandwich is made with pickles when I've explicitly asked for no pickles, sometimes the wait time wildly exceeds their estimate, and a few times I've showed up to find they've forgotten to place my order entirely. Late Saturday night we couldn't find anywhere open to grab a bite and we were STARVING! I found Bite on Yelp and decided to give this place a try. I really wanted to try the chicken sandwiches they had, but after the reviews with bones left in, I decided to veer away from chicken. I ordered the Mama Mia and my SO got the firecracker. Unfortunately, we were starving, so I didn't get a chance to snap a pic. The sandwiches were pretty good. Placing an order over the phone was a drag because the woman that answered the phone didn't seem to understand what I was asking. Any who, we also got 2 of their cookies. The cookies were really dry and brittle. Wouldn't recommend the cookies. The area this place is in isn't the best either. We witnessed two homeless people fighting each other and another lady was sitting right by the door asking for cash. I wouldn't go here alone late at night. read more

3.5 stars over 4, really. Over the years, I've learned that some sandwich stops are designed for my tastes and others aren't. Love supporting this small business and the staff have always been cool to work with, but I really can only support one sandwich on the menu: The Avenues. It's absolutely divine and tough to find a corned beef sandwich this good. However, the rest of the menu is pretty lackluster. The chicken is always dried and over-cooked. I'm not into crazy sauces on my sandwiches so avoid the peppercorn and BBQ sauce like the plague. They don't have a hot wing sauce option, so no way to make a yummy blue cheese and hot sauce chicken sando. Their Mamma Mia sando has pesto on it, which therefore makes it not a real Italian sando - and if you remove it, then you end up with a drier sandwich. Same thing with the Gotti, aioli is not a good substitute and in combination with artichokes it makes the sandwich sweet instead of vinegary tang. And Vinny's Bag of Donuts is incredibly lackluster in terms of the meat used in the meatball (it's also over-cooked meat that is not tender and they skimp on the marinara). You also cannot order chips and drinks on the Yelp takeout or delivery app, so that forces me to have to go pick up in person. I've mentioned this every time I've gone in the past 3 months and nothing has been done to update the app. Also, only one person is ever allowed to operate the register. Often times when I come in, the main lady who drives payment is in the back indisposed and I've had to stand there a few times for more than 10 minutes waiting for her to come out to even order my sando. Which is crazy, the sando maker could at least offer to start making the sando and then help speed up the process. Or go to the back and let her know "hey, customer, how long are you going to be so I can update them?" Or, train them to stop and be able to take over so your customers don't have to wait for her return. Instead they just look at you and say, "sorry, she'll be back in a minute." And, finally, the last few times I've been in there I've been jostled by aggressive Uber Eats drivers trying to get their customers' sandos. They've legit cut the line in front of me, even though I'm clearly standing there waiting to pick up or order my sando which has increased my wait time. They do this next door at Bellissimo Pizza also and I've had to tell the owner that they need a better system or some type of signage that asks drivers to wait in line behind other customers. Or tell them, "this customer is first in line, please wait." Though, that's a little hard for them to know when they are in back and the sando maker isn't paying attention to the customer. As many have mentioned earlier, there is formidable competition in the area that is too good to pass up. I find myself more often going to The Boy's Deli, Estela's, Ike's unless I'm craving The Avenues. If you like overly saucy sandwiches or don't have your heart set on a true Italian sub, this might be the place for you. After reading Wilhelm Y.'s review of Bite, I was drawn here for lunch for me and my bf, especially since it's so close to home. I ordered the Gotti (mortadella, artichoke hearts, ham, salami, two cheeses, oi & vinegar on sourdough) and the Gouda Good (rotisserie chicken, gouda cheese, pepperhouse sauce on dutch crunch) sandwiches for us to go with a bag of chips. I ran it home, and we enjoyed lunch with lots of mmm's (!!) and big eyes - so our lunches in a "word" was YUM-O!!! First, the combination of all the tastes in our two sandwiches were perfection; secondly, you can tell the care the guys take in making these sandwiches; and thirdly, the sandwiches are HUGE. We switched halves so we could try both sandwiches, but for the most part we finished all of it. I think we're set for the rest of the day though (nah, I'm a Yelper and foodie, that can't be right!) ! ;D Loved it!! Sadly the order we got today is everything but acceptable. The sweet bread my boyfriend had chose was from yesterday and so dry that it is not edible. If we pay $10+ for a sandwich one would expect the bread was not days old and hard as a rock. Based on this experience I can not recommend this @ike, we did let the ppl in the store know and the woman working there was unfriendly and just said well this is how the bread goes out and it's not her problem the bread was so dry! Man oh man. I was looking for a great sandwich on sourdough and I definitely found it at Bite. It's easy to walk past and almost miss but well worth the walk from Union Square. I got the New York New York sandwich, which has pastrami, bacon, & Swiss on sourdough, and wooooooooooooo. Sorry I got sidetracked. The bread had the perfect amount of crunch, the meat was cooked perfectly, the toppings gave it just enough texture without making it too sloppy. Great sandwiches at a decent price. read more

I am disappointed to have gotten my sandwich here. My first visit too. My sandwich was full of lettuce and some cheese. Sparsely made with other ingredients. I wonder why ? Maybe the sandwich maker was tired and did not put any TLC into making my food. First and last visit here. The people were nice and courteous. I was offered a refund but I was long gone from the area when I reached my destination to stop to eat. They could not do a credit to my card over the phone. I'm disappointed the sandwich was not a 5 star and just a 1 star. I hope they improve upon their vegetarian options. Eating factory farmed or processed meat is something I refuse to eat anymore. I like sandwiches and being in SF for the next couple of weeks, I have been exploring. Normally when I'm here I'm eating a lot of Chinese food. I love it. I really wanted to grab Ike's or Deli Board but unfortunately I couldn't get to those places so I had to settle for Bite. It wasn't that tragic since this sandwich place is pretty solid. I got the New York New York sandwich since I'm a sucker for pastrami sandwiches. It was a tasty sandwich but it wasn't mind-blowing. Pastrami was fine. The vegetables were fine and the bacon had a nice crunch to it. The bread was pretty crunchy which I like in my sandwiches since it adds texture to the sandwich. I do wish these sandwiches came with chips or a pickle. They seem to specialize in chicken sandwiches since a good chunk of their menu were chicken sandwiches and they have all these rotisserie chickens being cooked so I probably missed the boat on that and should have tried one of their chicken sandwiches. I think about Bite's sandwiches at innappropriate times of the night. Lucky for me, they are open late. I recommend the Gouda Good and add the pesto spread. I had the Gouda Good just the way it is and liked it. I added the pesto spread the next time I ordered it and LOVED it. It made it extra drippy and messy... and it excited me so much it made me extra drippy and messy... Was that tasteless of me? Perhaps. Regardless, the sandwich remains tasty. Delis can be hit or miss, and this place is definitely a hit! From their creative menu with delicious options, to their mouthwatering sandwiches, the Bite has it all. After ordering what I thought was the most delicious thing I saw, I sat back and looked at the menu, and there were at least 6-7 others that I would have been equally happy with. Ordered the Napa (turkey, brie, chipotle aioli) for $10.50. based on the reviews I lucked out with the wait time, which was about 10 min total on a Wednesday afternoon at 130. The service was fantastic - friendly and quick. The price seemed a bit much to me but it is a huge sandwich so I only ate half anyway, leaving basically another meal. The space was cute and to the point - small but seating outside. I think the sandwich would've been better with a different cheese, the brie was a strange choice. Most of my sammiching occurs out of the city because you get more for your money.I mean Luccas and Julies have sammiches that feel like 5 pound food babies you can't really complain about that! So imagine my glee when I was led to BITE by Miss B's bf one night. Needless to say, I am only echoing the same feelings about BITE as others here. They are open late (hooray after a night of drinking to eat a tasty sammich before hopping on the bus home) which is great and their prices seem to be about average for SF. $8 for most of their sammiches which isn't terrible considering you could be paying more for a sit down meal and you definitely get quality meat and bread. They had a large list of specialty sammiches, but my favorite was the Gouda Good! The service was a bit slow but when you have 6 drunk people babbling at you at 1am and youre the only sammich maker in the building its ok, and really appreciated! BF was in love with his sammich and we rave to others every time we see it to stop in and grab a "bite". So if you're in the TenderNob on a night out and have a need for some grub, head over to BITE as they will surely not disappoint! read more
