The Harmony school of Decatur is where my son started his educational career. He was rough around…read morethe edges but the school teachers and administrators were able to cultivate a great an environment that helped him to thrive. Although, we have been gone almost 3years he misses the school and staff. Therefore, when time permits we make visits and give updates on how well he is doing in his elementary school. Another great thing to mention, is the setting was so intimate with in the classes it allowed for building life long friendships. If your interested in a school whose curriculum is appropriate and challenging, coupled with a community setting to develop your child's character you should certainly consider The Harmony School of Decatur.

They're still humans! :)) But they really do learn in a much more varied 'landscape' of people, of cultures, family structures and points of view and they are better for it. However, as a psychologist, I also knew that I wanted a school that had a focus on social-emotional development. I feel so lucky to have found the Friends School for my son. They sincerely practice what they preach. My son has ADHD, and the teachers were exceptional in identifying his needs, using targeted strategies to assist him, and communicating with me about ways to support him. Despite his challenges, they never lost sight of his unique strengths. Now that he is in first grade, he is thriving. And, the beauty of it is, because it's a small school, his current teachers already have some familiarity with him and have been able to give me great feedback about his improvement. The focus on ensuring that kids are well-rounded citizens is also a real asset for FSA. My son is courteous, kind, and socially aware. He talks about helping the homeless, eating healthy foods, and caring for the environment. He gets adequate exercise and sunlight during the school day (which research shows is linked to greater energy and concentration). He is learning conflict management skills, mindfulness, empathy, and how to be a good member of a team. As someone who works with business leaders, I know that these lessons will be invaluable in his life. I once told the headmaster that he radiates warmth. His demeanor is so kind, upbeat, and positive - he never looks like he's going through the motions. I believe that he sets a great tone for the rest of the school. I can't rave enough about FSA. We have found a welcoming, supportive group of like-minded families which is essential when navigating through the trenches of parenting. While my daughter thrives at OCP, I have also grown as a parent and member of our community in ways I never expected. After touring SoulShine, a virtual group tour, we were not impressed and felt that prospective families should know about the schools structure before applying. This group of facilities does not operate to the level of a preschool and instead would be better reflected as a nature based daycare. The director who toured us was over the Kirkwood location but we saw photos of all three facilities. The rooms were well furnished but the curriculum in each space was greatly lacking with a student-led approach focusing on centers rather than a structured teaching day. We did not hear about the daily curriculum or milestone tracking for our students development. The tours involvement of curriculum seemed to be focused on what they had in each space (toys, playgrounds, book corner) rather than the learning. We were immediately put off at viewing the Kirkwood location when shown that the infant room opens directly to the outside of the building. While I am sure there are safety precautions in place there is not a way that I could feel comfortable as a parent knowing my newborn could potentially be interacting with strangers that approach the building. We will not be applying to this or any of the SoulShine locations and feel it is a overpriced daycare option and severly lacking preschool option.
