We always visit here, so were surprised to see they had moved to a gorgeous whitewashed cottage. The cottage itself has been beautifully renovated, and is very modern, light, bright and airy. It is also large, which means that everything is spaced out and organised, and there is plenty of room to move. What I was the most impressed with was the room at the back of the cottage full of gorgeous dining/kitchen items - wow, very impressive! I must confess we spent a bit of money on items that we could not get in Adelaide (couldn't resist the gorgeous blue wine goblets, even though they were $25 each - *cough*!). Everything is colour coded, and the visual impact is very aesthetically pleasing ... makes you want to buy stuff! :P

It has an unassuming…read morefrontage, but as you enter what was once Robe's saddlery, you will discover a labyrinth of rooms adorned with an always interesting collection of art work. Much of the work is from local artists, and has a nautical theme, but there are also artists from far afield, and one of my favourite past times in Robe is to browse the gallery to see what owners Terry and Nancy Johnson have curated for the current season, including the most recent works from Terry Johnson himself. The front room houses some works and small gifts and handcrafted pieces, but as you venture deeper into other rooms you will find larger and more expensive pieces, such as sculptures, glass works and paintings. The room at the rear catches a beautiful light at times and is a very serene place to while away some time dreaming of where all the pieces could go in your home. Terry and his wife Nancy only live in Robe during the summer months, and so the Gallery closes at the end of April to re-open in the spring. They are warm and inviting, full of interesting anecdotes and information about the artwork and artists. Terry also knows a fair bit about local history which he is happy to share with the interested. As the winter days lengthen into Spring, I always find a sense of anticipation that Terry and Nancy are wending their way from their winter retreat with another cache of goodies for me to ogle and buy.

I have really mixed feelings about this place, and as such this will be a very mixed review…read more This bookshop is in a gorgeous old building and has a beautiful leafy garden - a lovely spot to sit and enjoy a delicious coffee, glass of wonderful local Woodsoak wines or locally brewed beers all available. The book selection is 90% second hand and doesn't seem to change over very regularly. It's a shame - a couple of years ago there were lots more new books, a lovely selection of kids books and lots more second hand books. I'm not sure if there's been a change of owners, but it feels a bit like it's just the unpopular used book leftovers available after a changeover. I used to buy a couple of books every time I visited Robe - now I hardly bother browsing as I feel like I'm seeing the same stock, even though I only visit 2/3 times a year. Finally, I wish someone would teach the owner/manager a thing or two about the importance of friendly customer service. Whilst not rude, his persona is totally cold. He doesn't even say hello to people walking in - very strange for a tiny country town and a business that's presumably reliant on tourist trade. It's a real shame - he's presumably missing many opportunities to cross sell their local goodies (olive oils, coffee, gorgeous scented candles and interesting jewellery) plus I think his lack of personality is doing the owners of the wines he sells a real disservice - we've never been offered to taste the wines unless by the other staff during the high season (who are all lovely and chatty). Such a shame - this is a great spot, but the owner is missing big opportunities by not making more effort to engage with his customers!! I will continue to enjoy a glass of lovely Woodsoak wines with friends in the garden as it's such a lovely spot - and no doubt the conversation will always roll around to 'imagine how well this place would do if the owner smiled and chatted with his customers, and it they restocked the bookshelves!'

The coffee was perfect, on par with anything I've had in Adelaide, and the staff very friendly & accommodating, making my wife's coffee exactly as discussed, no extra cost for double shots. And their menu even acknowledges kids - they simply serve kids adult food, in half sizes, at half price, which I haven't seen before. An easy 5 stars for our experience.

The Robe Hotel is particularly child friendly with ample space for children to play and be themselves without disturbing others or getting glared at. The meals come quickly, and are really standard pub fare, so nothing special, but not badly done either. I often go for dinner with a gaggle of family members when I am visiting, knowing that I don't have to book, I will get consistently good food, I will have a relaxed time, and it won't cost the Earth to boot! People that know Robe at the height of the tourist frenzy will know that these things are all a godsend.

If you have your own caravan, there are lawned easy drive through sites and a great amenities block plus there are ensuite vans available too. However, we booked a cabin with friends and were delighted to find they are situated at the top of a steep hill (the cabin, not the friends!). The cabins are clean and spacious with two double bedrooms, a full kitchen, flat screen TV and a DVD player in case you strike a rainy day. A nice balcony with a table and chairs so you can sit and have a coffee (or a wine!) while you enjoy the wonderful views. The kids will be happy with the playground too. A small kiosk stocking the essentials (such as ice cream!) would be great but the shops are only a short drive away. Give this place a try - you'll enjoy it!
