BK Academy does concentrate on working with the students based on individual needs, wants and ability rather than marketing themselve. I can see my child develop weekly and read at 4 (~4.3 years old). I had 9 times of moving schools for 2 children because schools often talk very well on the website, open house and school tours and then they do not do as they talk with many reasons. I decided to move my child to BK right before September (after 2 weeks of summer camp at another school where I was told to send my child more weeks and the teacher just stood to look at my child's difficulties at drop off and I saw my child sit alone on the floor or stand facing the wall). I thought BK would be the last option before homeschooling. But he has been thriving in very well: play with friends at the first week, drop off withour cry, learn life skills, read well at 4 - a preschooler, especially he is happy and confident to play and learn. Teachers, especially, Meera, is really passionate for her teaching job - beyond any curriculum. Parents here are very friendly and supportive too. Regulattion is a big job for any child, especially for gifted and 2e students and given the rainy weather of the winter, not many schools can privide a huge indoor room for kids to run and ride, but BK does offer this option. Also, the playground is so huge that children can run and play as they want. Once they regulate themselve better, they will learn better. Touring many schools, I do not see they offer huge indoor and outdoor playgrounds for the children. They may fit more classrooms? Amazing experience for bright kids. That elementary school offers everything: from chess and drama classes to playtime and advanced math. If your kid is clearly bright, curious, and loves to learn - AND also struggling to be engaged in a traditional classroom environment, you might be thinking that homeschooling is the only option. We were on that path before finding BK. Now we can finally breath a sigh of relief that there is a place where our son is not just happy and learning in a social environment, but also thriving. Meera's ability to draw out our child's strengths while also connecting them to the other students is the magic you're seeking. It's incredibly hard to tell from any school tour what will be the right fit for any kid (especially 2e ones), but would definitely encourage you to try it out and/or ask Meera to speak to a current parent. read more

We are so happy we found this school! Our four-year-old was struggling at his Montessori pre-school. He was clearly gifted (able to read, write, and do math well above what would be expected for his age), but he wasn't making friends or playing with other children. We suspect some combination of ASD and ADHD but as it's not a clear-cut case, we don't have a diagnosis yet. The old school kept telling us that he needed one-to-one support with transitions, some of his behavior was no longer age-appropriate, and that he wouldn't participate in "circle time," choosing instead to wander off. At BK, all that changed. Ms. Meera and his other teachers understand gifted and "twice exceptional" children better than anyone I've ever met! They meet him exactly where he is and he's finally allowed to learn at his own pace (he just turned 5 and is tearing through his 3rd grade math workbook with their help). Even more valuable to us, they are directly teaching/helping him with things that may come naturally to other kids, but with which he struggles: making friends, working with same-age-peers on a shared projects, working out disputes, regulating his emotions, and executive functioning. It is such a relief to us to know that our son's school sees him for the unique, complicated kid he is and thinks that he's wonderful because of it. The school is accredited through 5th grade and our son will with stay with them for at least another year since we are so happy with his progress. Don't be intimidated by the testing requirement: Ms. Meera will evaluate your kid so it's really more like a child-interview requirement for a school application. read more

A great place for truly gifted children!

We call Ms. Meera the gift child whisperer. She just gets gifts children! We feel so lucky to have found BK. Our daughter attended several schools before BK and BK is by far the best. Everything is done very deliberately- from the low stim environment to the massive amount of free play worked into the day...even yoga in the mornings!! We love BK! read more

Bk Academy has been a transformative place for our daughter. The teachers especially Ms. Meera have vast experience with gifted children, really understand them and create an optimum environment so that they can flourish. The other teachers are also enormously loving and supportive. I would recommend this as a first class environment for anyone looking for early education for their gifted children. Really odd director at first, who then, along with her assistant, became awful. I'm a Yale admissions interviewer, also a parent, and have never seen such lack of professionalism. Small house with minimum tools for teaching, very unfriendly towards questions or inquisition into their staff turnover, very arrogant towards children and, contrary to their web site, does not conduct best practice by requiring test of children as young as 2. After some correspondence and questions, the director and administrator turned absolutely hostile and inexplicably cancelled our appointment for testing. We are very familiar with how to look for excellent schools and value highly the best education, coming from a household of many ivy leagues including Harvard, Yale, MIT etc. Stay away. They are just out to make money, not at all for the best interest of your child and absolutely not caring, despite some effort to put up some front to appear so. I have spoken to others who also felt the same way about how odd the director is, and very poor in communication. read more
