Open-Faced Turkey Sandwich (820 cal)
Mark H.

Black Bear Diner has been around since 1995. It was founded by Bruce Dean and Bob Manley, who opened the first location in Mount Shasta. The concept was built around hearty comfort food, large portions, and a family-friendly mountain-lodge atmosphere. As of 2026, that means the chain has been operating for about 31 years. The company has grown from a single diner in Northern California to more than 150 locations across multiple states. Out of the gate we waited to be sat with an empty restaurant. Once sat we waited about 5 minutes for drink order. Placed order for fried chicken (they were out!) and open face turkey. Switched to blackened salmon. With baked potato / salad xtra seasoned veggies. This is a neat atmosphere and you really wanted this meal to be good so you could return but unfortunately, it just was a miss. The baked potato was not fully cooked, so it was very difficult even to cut it in half. I'm not sure what happened on the season vegetables, but they were literally burnt so I'm not sure if they saute them after they flash boil them? So the broccoli was burnt and mushy, and the carrots were hard as a rock. The portion size was very large, except for the salmon, which was about 5 ounces. The menu called for it to be blackened, but there was very little if any seasoning on it at all, and certainly it was not blackened. Turning attention to the turkey plate, it was not nicely carved in the ocean slices of turkey rather it looked like pulled apart, sandwich meat on not so high-quality white bread. I definitely think there's a lot of room for improvement, but it's a risk given so many restaurants in the general area to stop back. Del was our server. He was very polite and did a good job.

Big portions, affordable price, and great customer service is always a win! We came here on a random weekday. Our waiter greeted us quickly and offered many recommendations. The food then came out warm and quick, which is always a plus. The newspaper styed menu was also cute and unique. For a diner, the food definitely did not disappoint. I will be back whenever in Sugar Land and craving diner food.

Solid diner food. Everything's good, no issues with it. I think they really shine at breakfast foods, but the lunch and dinner options are pretty good too. Good, attentive staff, prices are fair, portions are very generous.

Went for breakfast with my wife. Portions are HUGE and delicious. Our server, Catherine D., was amazing. She does all the little things right. I can tell that she is one of those rare individuals who does common things uncommonly well. She is a professional. Pay her more. Don't lose her. We'll be back soon.

We had a little bit of a wait to be seated for my husband and I, but while we waited every employee that walked by greeted us with a smile and a hello. Very nice staff. The decor and atmosphere was so cool, definitely gives off mountain vibes. They have such a large menu it was so hard to decide. We both chose the build your own breakfast. The food was amazing! Just a heads up though, their portions are pretty large overall a very cool place!

The food is always so good at this location! And don't worry, you'll get your fill. The portions are plentiful . Bear sized! My waiter Q was friendly, but not overly attentive.

Joe's hobo omelette $13.89 - decently good. Hashbrowns needed to be crispier though. Biscuit was good

3.5 stars Food is decently good. Humongous portions! Joe's hobo omelette $13.89 - it was just good. The bacon was a little fatty for my liking vs being crispy. I'm a sucker for hashbrowns, but these needed to be cooked longer to be crispier. The biscuit was good (and huge!). New York Steak and Eggs $22.99 - 10oz of steak. It wasn't the most tender steak, but it was decent. Cooked medium well. The 2 biscuits were huge - basically a small loaf of bread lol. We took both to-go. The grits were actually good (and I don't even like grits). Mocha iced cold brew $4.39 - tasted good, not too sweet, but it could be stronger. For $4, not bad. Overall a decent meal. Not super cheap, but we took home 2.5 biscuits and almost half the omelette. Probably won't return unfortunately.

The flavors were bold, perfectly balanced, and incredibly satisfying. The restaurant itself has a modern, upscale feel with spacious seating and dim lighting that creates a cozy atmosphere. The staff was patient, polite, and efficient, and my order arrived surprisingly quickly. The pizza was worth every penny--loaded with flavor, fresh ingredients, and cooked just right. Here's what we tried: Queso & Chips: Super creamy and flavorful. The chips were fresh and had the perfect crunch. Great way to get it poppin'! I orderd the BBQ Beef Hash: It was on point! Smoky, filling, and satisfying. The beef was tender, and the potatoes had a nice crisp. Topped with perfectly cooked scrambled eggs--comfort food done right. Michelle had the Cheeseburger: She commented that it was tasty and juicy. Nothing fancy, but it hit the spot. The bun was soft and buttery, and the cheese melted just right. Couldn't leave without trying the So' O's (Southern Fried Oreos: Absolutely indulgent! Crispy outside, gooey inside, and dusted with powdered sugar. A fun and nostalgic dessert that's worth throwing all of l the calories away for. The vibe is upbeat and Southern-chic, with quirky decor and a lively crowd of all ages and backgrounds. Service was friendly and attentive. Prices are a little high, but portions are generous. Would definitely come back--especially for brunch and those fried Oreos!

Water was dripping on us from the AC vents due to moisture buildup, which made the environment uncomfortable and unsanitary. The food was equally terrible. The crab cake had a strong fishy odor/taste and appeared undercooked - we had to send it back. The table next to us also sent the crab cake back so that's how you know it was bad. My mom and sister both ordered the State Fare Breakfast, and their meals were no better. The hash browns were raw, and the biscuit was so hard like a rock. Even after they brought replacements, the food was still poorly prepared and barely edible. I've never gone somewhere that has messed up hash browns! My dad and I ordered the birria grilled cheese, and that also did not taste good. This restaurant prioritized massive quantities of food over quality. The large size of foods led the food to not be cooked adequately. This was one of the worst dining experiences I've had. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Don't be misled by the positive reviews like I was.

They ordered a strip steak, salmon, and a salad, and I didn't hear a single complaint from their side of the table. My wife and I have been to WC several times before for lunch, happy hour, and dinner but this was our first time for brunch. We had 1pm reservations and the sky looked like it was going to pour down ran any moment. Our hostess was very kind and let us pick the table we wished to sit in order to get a good view of the bar and windows to keep an eye on the weather and the arrival of our family members. Our server, Dane, was in top form and gave us suggestions for a starter. We were torn between the Jalapeno-gouda biscuits, Candied Bacon and other tasty sounding dishes and quickly agreed the Goat Cheese Fondue. The dish arrived shortly after our whole party was seated. Dane had great presentation as he drizzled olive oil over the steamy, bubbling cheese dish that looked amazing, smelled wonderful, and tasted even better. Melted goat goat cheese with a blend of olives, roasted tomatoes, garlic confit and thyme that we generously spread over warm toast points. It was all devoured in no time. Dane returned to clear our plates and took our order. The brunch menu is an exploration in so many things to suit your breakfast or lunch craving. We ordered the Strawberry Short Stack, the Hangover Burger, Brunch Sandwich, and the Steak and Egg Hash. Out of curiosity we also ordered a side of the Green Chile Cheese Grits. My wife and I love to share so the Strawberry Short Stack and Brunch Sandwich were perfect for dividing. Those pancakes are picture perfect, fluffy, and just the right amount of sweet. Interestingly, Dane had asked if we wanted the toppings of strawberry compote, vanilla anglaise, whipped strawberry butter, and lemon shortbread crumble on the side so we could control the sweetness. For us that was the perfect suggestion as we were able to individually taste each accoutrement to build our perfect bite. The Brunch Sandwich was fantastic. Sometimes a breakfast sandwich can appear to be unwieldy but in this case it was manageable to cut in half and handle appropriately, The everything bagel was the right vehicle for this savory bite of fried-medium egg, layered with applewood smoked bacon, pickled Fresno peppers (for nice pop of spice), greens, american cheese, and a garlic-basil aioli. I didn't taste the Hangover Burger nor the Steak and Egg Hash, perhaps because I was a bit gorged on the pancakes and sandwich but the dishes looked amazing and I have a mental shortlist for the next time we dine at WC. Oh, and I did mention that we were curious about the Green Chile Cheese Grits. Out of this world! Those grits stole the show. We all kept commenting on them. Get them. You will be rewarded. When we dine we always expect good food. For us, service is the reason to come back. Dane was an outstanding server. He had personality and hospitality which is rare these days. He was conversationally engaging. He never lingered too long, always seemed to anticipate what we might need, politely asking to clear plates. Hat's off to Dane. Thank you Whiskey Cake for delivering a great dining experience to kick-off Father's Day weekend. We will be back.
