We have gotten food from here three times now, but always togo. The line is always out the door and the inside has been so loud and packed. Service ... it's okay. Slow. But I guess it's due to a lot of people. Food is amazing! Definitely beats Ihop and Denny's. If you're looking for simple breakfast, Black Bear Diner definitely has it! Black Bear Diner has been around since 1995. It was founded by Bruce Dean and Bob Manley, who opened the first location in Mount Shasta. The concept was built around hearty comfort food, large portions, and a family-friendly mountain-lodge atmosphere. As of 2026, that means the chain has been operating for about 31 years. The company has grown from a single diner in Northern California to more than 150 locations across multiple states. Out of the gate we waited to be sat with an empty restaurant. Once sat we waited about 5 minutes for drink order. Placed order for fried chicken (they were out!) and open face turkey. Switched to blackened salmon. With baked potato / salad xtra seasoned veggies. This is a neat atmosphere and you really wanted this meal to be good so you could return but unfortunately, it just was a miss. The baked potato was not fully cooked, so it was very difficult even to cut it in half. I'm not sure what happened on the season vegetables, but they were literally burnt so I'm not sure if they saute them after they flash boil them? So the broccoli was burnt and mushy, and the carrots were hard as a rock. The portion size was very large, except for the salmon, which was about 5 ounces. The menu called for it to be blackened, but there was very little if any seasoning on it at all, and certainly it was not blackened. Turning attention to the turkey plate, it was not nicely carved in the ocean slices of turkey rather it looked like pulled apart, sandwich meat on not so high-quality white bread. I definitely think there's a lot of room for improvement, but it's a risk given so many restaurants in the general area to stop back. Del was our server. Big portions, affordable price, and great customer service is always a win! We came here on a random weekday. Our waiter greeted us quickly and offered many recommendations. This is usually our to go spot for breakfast but this visit we had complications with the service & server. Took an hour for us to get seated and took another hour for us to get our food that was cold. But thank you to the manager Alyssa who took it off our bill. We didn't get our servers name but she is white woman with red hair who lacks customer service and always greets you with a sarcastic "heyyy friends" I do not recommend her she also moves sooo slow. read more

The restaurant has a nice atmosphere and is well-maintained, which made for a good first impression. Unfortunately, the overall dining experience did not meet our expectations. The food lacked flavor and was disappointing. We also noticed that some of the utensils were dirty, which was concerning from a cleanliness standpoint. In addition, the service was below average, as it felt inattentive and not very welcoming. I hope the management addresses these issues because the restaurant has potential, but improvements in food quality, cleanliness, and customer service are definitely needed. read more

I'm a sucker for hashbrowns, but these needed to be cooked longer to be crispier. The biscuit was good (and huge!). New York Steak and Eggs $22.99 - 10oz of steak. It wasn't the most tender steak, but it was decent. Cooked medium well. The 2 biscuits were huge - basically a small loaf of bread lol. We took both to-go. The grits were actually good (and I don't even like grits). Mocha iced cold brew $4.39 - tasted good, not too sweet, but it could be stronger. For $4, not bad. Overall a decent meal. We ordered the Avocado Toast and received something that looked like a shade of its former self. But during moments of weakness - call it exhaustion, call it laziness, or perhaps just a profound weariness of eating my own cooking. It's in these vulnerable states that I turn to my wife, uttering the sacred words: "Hey, Babe, want to go out for dinner?" There's a pause, her eyes bore into my soul, silently recalling the dozen or so times this exact scenario has played out, culminating in yet another Houston restaurant-induced disappointment. It's a monthly ritual, this hopeful inquiry, followed by my inevitable regret. And Black Bear Diner, my friends, was no exception. It was, in fact, a BIG DISAPPOINTMENT! We rolled in around 4:30 PM. The place was practically a ghost town - two other couples were dining at the time. So imagine my utter bewilderment, my profound sense of betrayal, when I looked around and saw... dirt. Filth, even. Seriously, folks, if you've got time to lean, you've got time to clean! This is a restaurant, not a forgotten relic from a post-apocalyptic wasteland. But the real pièce de résistance, the moment that truly solidified my descent into despair, was the food itself. We both ordered the fish and chips; I, opted for the onion rings. And when our plates arrived, I swear it looked and tasted like it had been liberated directly from the freezer section of HEB. I'm not kidding. When every single onion ring and every single fish fillet is the exact same size and shape, perfectly uniform, like they were born from a mold... well, my friends, that's not "freshly prepared." That's "reheated from a bag." So, I expended my precious time, my valuable gasoline, and my dwindling patience, all to pay someone else to defrost and warm up food that I could have purchased myself, at a fraction of the cost, from a grocery store. It's clear to me now. The diagnosis is undeniable. I am, as the great Albert Einstein so eloquently put it (INSANE): "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results." I keep repeating the same behavior - venturing out to different Houston restaurants - and, against all logical odds, I continue to expect a different outcome - (good food served in a timely manner, I said good not GREAT, I know that's to much to ask for). Breast Timmmmmme! I cashed in on my Free Bear Choice Breakfast which comes with a waffle, pancake, or French toast, eggs, and sausage/bacon. Note, there are no substitutions. However, my previous pics show substitutions, I must've paid extra. Can quite remember. I don't eat eggs, so I chose the waffle and bacon. I went during the day so I was customer number 5. Location: Open your eyes, because if you drive too fast past it, you will probably miss it. It is nestled in the shopping center next to Ulta Beauty and other neat businesses. Parking: BB Diner is in a fairly large shopping center, so there is plenty of parking. I lucked up and got front spot. Cleanliness: You can tell unfortunately they do not have enough workers because the unoccupied tables needed more than tidying up! You can tell they were once occupied because of the left over plates, cups, etc. The staff seemed overwhelmed! The Service: From what I can see, there are two people working the floor and one person cooking in the kitchen, so service was a bit slow. But, they were sooooo super polite and you can tell they are doing the best they can. Management, please give them a pat on the back. Poor workers, my first waffle was super burnt. They have had to take it back and remake it. The new waffle was light and fluffy and the bacon was perfect. This is an absolutely stellar upscale diner in the University area of Sugar Land. I'd heard about it several times from a friend so we made a point of coming out and trying it on a random Sunday when we didn't really have any other plans. There was a bit of a wait, but the experience was still spectacular. Tables turned over reasonably frequently, and we were seated in a booth, which is my wife's preferred seating arrangment. We both opted for the Bear's Choice on our first visit, which is a combination breakfast similar to a Grand Slam, but more upscale. We ended up getting enough food that we were full through lunch. We ended up coming back here to eat Thanksgiving lunch since we found out we weren't going to be hosting and didn't want to cook a lot for two people. Again, we received massive servings of turkey, potatoes, green beans, and stuffing to the point that we ended up taking half home and getting the full leftovers experience too. So I went to a black bear diner in another state so this was the first time in Texas, and boy I had a great experience! Come here for brunch for sure! The food portion is a huge size, so you can share a meal with someone. The service was decent. However 3/4 people at the table food was cold by the time we got it. Don't be fooled by the 3.6 stars! This place was absolutely amazing! I ordered the Chicken Caesar Melt with white cheddar mac n cheese. It took about 17 minutes to arrive. My brother got pancakes, which were massive, the portions are huge! The waiter was nice, he came by multiple times to check on us as well as refilling water quickly. The interior was nice, it had a little Christmas tree and fake snow along the railings separating the tables. They also had desert, which I regret not getting.
