Watch your car, we were 1 of 3 cars vandalized in the parking lot. Security footage showed 2 men pull up and smashed our side window and take stuff out of our car. They couldn't see their faces or get a plate #. We were in a booth within view of our car but they were so fast we didn't see it happening. They said that it's been an ongoing problem but they haven't done anything to stop it. They also said none of the employees cars have been hit. They have good breakfasts, but that's about it. The service was pretty good at this location. They were very friendly and provided quick and efficient service, so I have to give that to them. Black Bear serves typical greasy diner food, so if you're concerned about eating healthy, I wouldn't eat here (except maybe for the salads, which I honestly haven't tried yet). I got the pecan-crusted trout last time, which was good, although a bit on the dry side and also a very thin piece. The mashed potatoes, though, were disgusting. 3/4 of it was creamy, white gravy. Nasty! Hardly any actual potatoes to speak of. What the heck? Had I known that, I would have requested no gravy at all. The vegetables (zucchini) were also under-cooked. CUSTOMER SERVICE REVIEW: Stopped by the location for lunch. Waited 15 minutes to place the order because the waitress was standing talking to a table for that long. Ordered a soft drink and that came. She took my order of a French Dip, Fries and a side of horseradish. She took my glass away to refill it and it was gone for 10 minutes. How do I know it was my glass when she brought it back because it was gone so long? My lunch arrived minus the horseradish. Had to wait while she got that. We had a party of 7 and was looking for a nice casual place for dinner. We called to see if they could take our large party and said to come right over. We were greeted by Selina as we entered, table was setup right away. Selina was our server and was very helpful and sweet. For a young waitress, she did an excellent job. Our orders were promptly taken and our salads came out quick. Our steaks came out a little more cooked than ordered but still really tasty. The servings sizes were big and prices were decent for Napa. Our overall experience was excellent due to the service by Selina. Me and my family stopped by to have lunch before heading to San Francisco. It was mine and husband 18yrs Anniversary. Food was good. But what really upset us when we got to the car someone busted are back window and took my Coach purse and wallet. 2 different customers came to us saying that they told several different employees that someone window is broken. There was glass on the road. And it's a new car. No one asked us if we had that kind of car. That's what upsets me about it. I went and talked to the manger on duty. She took my numbers but still nothing g. Yes it's my fault I left my purse. But at least they could of asked there customers. I'm glad there was no more damage to our car. Really cute breakfast place. I've gone to a couple Black Bear Diners in Northern California. I've always had decent service. Everything I've ordered always has been good. Incredibly large portions so you could share with 2-3 other people. I'm very happy there is a BBD in my hometown. Some of these reviews are really harsh, although I do believe one can have terrible service and not so great food. I'm not discounting anyone's experience but... 1 star? It's not like there are cockroaches crawling around or dead on the floor. There are shit for restaurants in Vallejo. Cut this (and many others) a little slack. Many years ago when traveling to Northern California my family and I would try to find blackbear diner's because of their great food and reasonable prices. Unfortunately the quality of the food has gone downhill. I ordered the tri- tip with baked potato salad and mixed vegetables. The plate looked like they took yesterday's leftovers and heated them up in the microwave. Even the cornbread muffin was rubbery as if it was heated up in a microwave. Very nice people. Very bad food. My son had the breakfast burrito and hash browns. He took one bite and said, "oh my gosh" and didn't eat another bite. I ordered meatloaf, and it was just a mushy disaster. The veggies were watery and tasteless. The best part of the meal was the side salad with Caesar dressing. I took my dad for a pre- Fathers Day breakfast. The food took a long time, in fact people that came after us , got their food first. When our food finally arrived, everything but the sausage, was cold. My husband's bacon was nearly raw. I informed the waitress, who was amazing. I asked to speak with the manager, Maria L. She offered to remake my plate . I told her no for two reasons: I don't send food back (I don't want the staff taking out any frustration on my food) and it took too long to get the food in the 1st place. I asked for a discount and a to go box so I could warm it when I got home. She said she could discount it, but, if I took it, I'd have to pay full price! What about my inconvenience? What about not being full because my breakfast was cold? Terrible management! There are too many choices to go back there again. read more

I have really enjoyed the atmosphere and design of this restaurant. So many cute bears!!! I have had Lupita E. as my waitress 3 times. She is just the nicest young lady. She is attentive, listens to you, and checks on you often. Just a true pleasure. The food here is absolutely wonderful. I have enjoyed Prime Rib dinner, Bruce's Omlet, and the Volcano. If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. Maybe we just came on a super busy night (Thursday), but they were slammed and the customer service was terrible. My husband and I had been on the road close to 4 hours and were starved when we arrived in the Vallejo area. We stopped here thinking it was like a mom and pop place (we are from Florida and were in California for our honeymoon) but we later learned it was a popular restaurant chain. When we arrived, we sat in the waiting area for about 10-15 minutes while waitresses slowly cleared off tables. While sitting in the waiting area, we saw a sign posted that reads: "WARNING Chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer or birth defects or other reproductive harm may be present in foods or beverages sold or served here." Since we live on the east coast, we have never seen signs like this posted in any establishment, so that was obviously a concern. When we were finally seated, we asked 3 different people about it and no one could give us an answer. Then we started to question whether or not we should even eat there if they are making such scary and concerning claims about their food practices (and can't even explain what it means to people from out of state). Our waitress stopped to get our drink orders and immediately hurried away without so much as a "hi how are you two this evening" - she seemed very busy and couldn't be bothered. She brought our drinks 10 minutes later (we only asked for water) and didn't even ask us if we were ready to order food. She said, "I'm gonna go grab this table's food and then I'll be back to get your order". She brought that table's food out and passed ours at least 7 or 8 times without acknowledging us. I finally asked my husband if we could leave because clearly we weren't getting served any time soon. We went to IHOP across the way and had a fantastic meal. We also spoke with a hostess that could actually articulate and explain the sign posted (because IHOP had one too) and I left feeling informed and pleasantly full. Stopping at this Black Bear Diner was not a good experience for us. read more

5 star service in a 2 star restaurant. We were on our way from SF to Sacramento and stopped here for a late dinner. The decor makes you feel as if you're in a cabin in the woods. We were seated right away and our waitress came over within minutes. We took some time to look over the menu and I ended up choosing a turkey burger without the cheese and substituted the fries with a salad. My partner ordered chicken and fries, we also ordered two coffees. Our food came out quickly and my burger was pretty good, as good as one can expect in a diner. My partner didn't love her chicken, but that's primarily because the piece were too large and she was hoping for smaller chicken bites.
