Saw some reviews saying something about a Harry Potter vibe, but I didn't get that at all. It has some cool elements, but definitely did not live up to those expectations. Had a nice beer selection on tap. And prices were quite reasonable. Ended up picking up a few interesting beers on my way out.

The pub has a bar area and a restaurant area - we only ever went into the bar as you could eat int here and it was really cosy (dogs are also allowed!). The staff were incredibly friendly and chatty (lets face it, Yorkshire, particularly North Yorkshire folk are possibly the most friendly on the planet - i challenge you to disprove this!). The food was INCREDIBLE. Nothing fancy pants, just really good food, VERY big portions (trust me on this, you dont need three courses - choose your weapon of starter or dessert to go alongside your main - we made the mistake one night and 1) couldnt eat it all and 2)pretty much rolled home). We spent an evening in the pub, had a meal and then sat playing card games - we felt incredibly welcome. So welcome that we ended up visiting three times in a week long holiday. The village of Haxby is not exactly the beaten path but this pub has lots of local flavour and most of the folks in there were locals. If you get your meal before 645pm there are early bird specials and we took advantage of that both of us having the steak and ale pie which was really excellent served with chips and a fresh green salad. Lots of selection on the menu and a good dessert menu as well. It's a free house so there was a good selection of beers and ales and a really great selection of gin (gin corner) behind the bar. The waitresses were attentive and friendly and we had beer and food in no time at all. Highly recommend.

Three things stood out. 1 great service 2 great food 3 lovely relaxing atmosphere. Although the car park is quite small this should not put you off. There is a small seating area out in the front. Inside the decor is very nice, with an open fire place which is used in winter. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. I recommend this pub to all wanting a quiet drink, although there is a not a wide choice of beers on offer, that shouldn't matter. Highly recommended.

The bed was firm but comfortable. The room looks out onto a large lawn behind the pub. £95 for our double room. The food we had at the restaurant was exceptional. We started with the prawns with a sweet chili sauce. The prawns were tempura style, crisp, light batter over tender, moist prawns. The sauce was excellent. I had the fried duck breast over noodles with hoyson sauce. Perfect! The haddock and chips my wife had was superb as well! The fish was a huge fillet, moist and firm with a light, crisp shell. The chips were great, but the fresh mushy peas were even better. We washed it down with a wonderful bottle of Chilean Syrah. The staff were friendly and helpfull. The atmosphere comfortable.

Well worth a visit if in area especially if staying at Naburn Lock caravan site which is 10 mins walk away. They also do takeaway's for those onsite too! Ale: Around £3 per pint. Food: around £8.00 per main course. But has a BBQ special on friday evenings for £10 with unlimited salads/veg to go with your choice of fish/meat/chicken.
